Chapter 334: Chapter 334: Never Let Your Guard Down

He knew she wouldn’t accept his gifts for free, which was why he’d said it was only around a hundred bucks.

But the shoes he had his eye on were far, far more expensive than that.

Claire Sinclair nodded but said nothing.

Ethan Kingsley asked tentatively, "You don’t seem to be in a very good mood. Perhaps you need someone to talk to, and I could be that someone."

Claire Sinclair shot him a sideways glance. There was always something inscrutable in his eyes, something that made her feel he was up to no good.

’It pays to be guarded.’ She didn’t dare get too close to him, so she said, "I’m not in a bad mood, just a bit overwhelmed by work stress."

"That makes sense. I was quite surprised when I saw you volunteering in the disaster area. You look so slender, I didn’t expect you to be such a hard worker."

"Heh..." Claire Sinclair let out an awkward laugh. "I also didn’t expect Mr. Kingsley to donate 30 million. The people in the disaster area will be very grateful to you."

Ethan Kingsley smiled. "It was just a small contribution. As long as it can help the disaster zone, 30 million is nothing. I was actually worried people might think it wasn’t enough."

"Does being guilt-tripped by people bother you, Mr. Kingsley?" Claire Sinclair had always wanted to ask him that.

Many people seem to think that the wealthy have money just falling from the sky, and that wherever a donation is needed, they are obligated to give.

Claire Sinclair believed Ethan Kingsley must have experienced this sort of guilt-tripping firsthand.

Ethan Kingsley shook his head, a wistful look on his face. "I’m used to it. When I said I was worried people would think it wasn’t enough, I actually meant I was worried *you* would think it wasn’t enough."

Claire Sinclair retorted irritably, "I didn’t donate a single cent myself. I’m in no position to complain that you donated too little."

"You may not have donated any money, but you reported on the situation in the disaster zone in a timely manner, allowing more people to understand what was happening. Your contribution is greater than my 30 million."

’This is getting tedious,’ she thought. ’We’re completely off-topic.’

Claire Sinclair gave a noncommittal reply, "It’s just part of a reporter’s job."

As if sensing her impatience, Ethan Kingsley smoothly changed the subject. "Hey, it’s getting late. Aren’t you heading back soon?"

Claire Sinclair asked in return, "What time is it?"

Ethan Kingsley slightly rolled up his cuff, his gaze falling on an expensive wristwatch. "A quarter past eight. You didn’t bring your phone?"

"I forgot it."

"For someone in your profession, you should probably have a watch, preferably a waterproof one. I imagine a reporter always needs to be aware of the time, right?"

"That makes sense. I’ll pick one up later."

Ethan Kingsley grew pensive.

Claire Sinclair said no more. She stood up and walked toward the bus stop by the road, her mood so foul that she forgot to even say goodbye.

There weren’t many people waiting for the bus at this hour, but there were also very few buses. ’Perhaps there’s a traffic jam up ahead,’ she mused.

Claire Sinclair waited and waited patiently. The bus she needed never came; only buses for other routes passed by.

Just then, a white convertible suddenly pulled up to the curb. Ethan Kingsley was in the driver’s seat. He honked the horn once, drawing Claire Sinclair’s attention.

"Claire Sinclair, would you like a ride home?"

"No, thank you."

Ethan Kingsley didn’t press the issue, smiling as he said, "If you’re really feeling down, you can always message me on WeChat. Goodbye!"

Claire Sinclair glanced at him but didn’t reply, watching as the convertible gradually disappeared into the distance.

「That night, back at the hotel, it was already past nine o’clock.」

Claire Sinclair took a shower and then lay in bed with her laptop, ready to write.

After finishing and publishing the day’s Chapter, she opened up the comments section.

She wouldn’t have known if she hadn’t looked, but one glance left her stunned...
