Chapter 185: Chapter 185: It’s No Use Pretending to Faint
Claire Sinclair was taken aback. She turned to look at the group of girls, who were about her age. From what they were saying, they must have been female soldiers who had served alongside her sister.
When they saw her looking, none of the female soldiers spoke. They just gazed at her with sorrowful eyes.
An unsettling feeling washed over Claire Sinclair. She silently picked up the uniform and went into the bathroom to change.
When she came out, the female soldiers were still there.
The moment she appeared in the training uniform, one of the female soldiers suddenly broke down, squatting on the floor and burying her head in her hands as she sobbed.
"How can Quinn be gone? How can she just be gone... SOB... SOB... SOB..."
"Hey, Kerr, don’t cry. People are watching."
"I can’t help it! Before Quinn left, she promised she’d spar with me, but she never came back..."
"You’re going to make me cry too. Quinn was so kind... SOB... SOB..."
Watching the scene of her sister’s former comrades huddled together in grief, a heavy weight settled in Claire Sinclair’s chest.
’If only my sister were still alive...’
’But she’s dead. She’s never coming back...’
’Sister...’
It was as if she was back two years ago, at the exact moment her sister stopped breathing. An inexplicable pain seized her heart, and it became harder and harder to breathe.
Finally unable to bear the overwhelming grief, Claire Sinclair collapsed limply to the floor.
"Hey, Claire Sinclair, what’s wrong?"
"Someone, quick! Claire Sinclair fainted!"
Seeing this, the female soldiers forgot all about crying and rushed in to help.
Claire Sinclair was subsequently taken to the infirmary. The doctor performed a brief examination but found nothing abnormal—it was just a common fainting spell.
After lying in bed for about ten minutes, Claire Sinclair finally came to.
A crowd had gathered in the infirmary...
There were both men and women, all clad in training uniforms. Every one of them looked at her with an expression of sorrow.
’This is unbearable. I’m not my sister. What’s the point of them all staring at me?’
Claire Sinclair pushed herself into a sitting position. Facing so many pairs of eyes made her feel extremely uncomfortable.
Just as she was debating whether to speak, a doctor suddenly walked in and started shooing people away. "What are you all doing crowded in here? The patient needs to rest quietly. Get back to whatever you were doing!"
The crowd finally dispersed.
Claire Sinclair let out a soft sigh of relief and looked up at the doctor. "Hello, what happened to me?"
"I don’t know what happened to you. Why don’t you tell me why you fainted for no reason?"
Claire Sinclair slowly lowered her head and said nothing.
The doctor frowned. "Let me tell you, faking it won’t do you any good. Now that you’re here, you will obey orders!"
Claire Sinclair quickly replied, "I wasn’t faking—"
"And you still say you weren’t? I gave you a full physical. Everything’s normal!"
"I really wasn’t faking. A moment ago—"
"Claire Sinclair, don’t think you can do whatever you please just because you have connections. Let me tell you something. Around here, you won’t get any special treatment because of your sister, and your connections can’t help you either. Understand?"
After hearing this, Claire Sinclair finally fell silent.
’Since no one believes me, why should I waste my breath?’
’In the end, it’s because I’m too weak. That’s why people don’t trust me.’
’I can’t believe I haven’t even been here a full day and I’ve already disgraced my sister. If word of this gets to Mr. Quincy, what will he think of me?’
The thought of letting people down left a bitter taste in Claire Sinclair’s mouth. She said in a low voice, "I’m sorry for the trouble. It won’t happen again."
The doctor said coldly, "If you’re fine, then get back to your unit. They’re already assembled downstairs."
