Chapter 34: Why Are You Not Working?

She leaned down towards it as she picked one of the clothes kept in there. A strong, stinky smell erupted through it, and she instantly grabbed her nose to block the flow of smell. "Ugh... this is actually too much."

A sigh left through her mouth, her hands tugged at her waist as she muttered. "Can’t he just allow me to live here for a few days?!"

Her gaze fell on the clothes once again, and she frowned slightly. "Ugh... that looks disgusting."

She remained standing there for a while without saying anything. But then she leaned down towards the bucket and picked it back up. "Where do I have to go to wash all these?" she asked, her voice loud.

Leon’s voice rang out from inside the mansion, echoing across the garden. "Go to the hall, turn left, and you’ll find the place where we wash the clothes!"

Without wasting any more time, she started walking towards the room that Leon just told her about.

When she reached the area, her eyes fell upon a large circular well. A bucket sat beside it, ready to be lowered for water, and the various tools needed for washing clothes were neatly placed nearby. It was a simple yet well-organized washing area.

She placed the bucket on the ground in rage, a loud thud echoed through the chamber, and a slight noise escaped through the door.

The noise instantly caught Leon’s attention. "Oi!" he shouted at the top of his lungs. "Don’t destroy the place! Just wash the clothes like a normal, civilized human being!"

"Yeah, I know that much."

"You don’t have to shout like a scrawny bitch to teach me."

A pause appeared out of nowhere, and silence fell over the surroundings. But then finally Leon’s voice fell inside her ears. "Do your work nicely, or I’ll tell the mansion lord about it."

A vein popped through her temple. "Mansion lord this, mansion lord that." She scoffed.

After a few deep breaths, Sylvia finally managed to calm herself down. Reaching into the bucket, she picked up a piece of clothing and began washing it properly. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Time passed slowly. Before she realized it, the morning sun had climbed high into the sky, and afternoon had arrived.

At last, Sylvia straightened her back. Her clothes were damp from splashes of water, and beads of sweat covered her forehead from hours of work. A faint yet satisfied smile appeared on her face as she wiped the sweat away. "Phew... finally done," she muttered, letting out a tired sigh.

She made her way outside the chamber and entered the hall where Kael was sitting on the couch. Sylas remained on his lap, as Kael was patting his head gently.

Out of nowhere, a random thought lingered inside her mind. ’He does seem like a good father to that child.’

She stood there silently for a while, her gaze fixed on Kael.

Eventually, Kael broke the silence. "Are you going to keep staring at me, or are you going to speak?"

His attention never left Sylas. As he spoke, he continued gently patting the child’s head, his expression as calm and indifferent as ever.

Instantly, her back straightened; the sudden words from Kael had caught her off guard. "I-I was about to." She scratched her temple lightly.

Silence settled over the chamber once more. Sylvia remained standing where she was, while Kael continued gently patting Sylas’s head. The child had already fallen asleep in his arms, his breathing slow and steady.

After a few moments, Kael’s voice broke the silence. "Continue."

Sylvia blinked a few times before she finally gathered all of her thoughts.

"Right..." She took a small pause as she continued. "Do you know anything about the person who helped Count Victor?"

’Oho? So her work was related to that day.’

A faint smirk tugged his lips as he continued. "Why are you asking me about that?"

"Uh... because you’re also a citizen of this county." She shrugged lightly.

"I live far from the county’s center. Because of that, I’m not particularly informed about the events taking place here."

Sylvia stared at Kael’s face for longer than expected. A thought appeared in her mind. ’He’s not wrong about that. And judging by the way he acts around his son, he genuinely seems like a family man. It’s possible he really doesn’t know much about what’s going on in the county.’

She tilted her head. "I’ll be living here until I find the person. Will you be fine with it?"

"As I said before, as long as you work for your stay, you can live here."

A bright smile appeared on her face, and she bounced lightly on her feet in excitement. She turned towards the chair next to the couch on which Kael was sitting, and she took a seat on it.

"Phew!! I worked for hours today," she muttered.

However, the moment she sat down on the chair, that feeling of satisfaction didn’t last long. "AHHH! How dare you sit there while I’m still working?!"

Leon’s loud voice suddenly echoed throughout the chamber. "You should be the one working! Get up and wash the dishes!"

He rushed toward her in a complete rage and began hitting her with a dusting cloth, as if he was trying to chase her out of the chair.

A vein popped through her forehead as she blocked Leon’s hits with her arm. "Hey, what the hell are you doing?"

"How dare you try to laze around in here when I’m, who’s superior to you, is working mindlessly." He continued hitting her.

"Ugh... why do I have to work like you? I’m not a servant."

"And you’re not someone who’s my superior, who said that to you?"
