Chapter 401: Chapter 231: Sovereign’s Heir
"Assassin!!"
A shriek shattered the night’s silence in the Royal Palace, echoing into every corner.
RATTLE! RATTLE!
The Imperial Guard soldiers in the palace sprang into action, their Iron Armor rattling as they ran.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
Imperial Guards leaped into the air, vaulting onto walls and rooftops, speeding across them in a blur.
SWISH! SWISH!
Experts from the Dragon Guard Bureau shot into the night sky, streaking through the twilight.
They all converged on a single location.
The palace of the Sovereign, Fu Jintian!
After a successful strike, the assassin quickly melted into the fog, retreating toward the outer walls of the Royal Palace.
However, the Fu Family’s King’s Body, who stood guard over the Royal Palace, was already charging over.
His expression changed drastically as he looked at the roiling fog and sensed the anomaly within.
"Xiang Wansheng? The Xiang Family is courting death!"
BOOM!
A deafening roar shattered the night.
The Fu Family’s King’s Body drew upon the Power of Heaven and Earth, forming a colossal hand that reached for the strange, demonic fog.
But it was met with a counterattack. The fog suddenly condensed, smashing outward like a fist with a dull thud. The impact disrupted the airflow, sending out vast ripples.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
HFF! HFF! HFF!
The chilling, dense fog roiled as the colossal hand vanished and reappeared.
The immense pressure of the King’s Body realm erupted, blanketing the sky and ground.
But another aura, also that of a King’s Body, rose to meet it, clashing invisibly as it canceled out the first.
"A King’s Body? So, Xiang Wansheng actually managed to advance."
The Fu Family’s King’s Body growled in mid-air. His imposing figure emanated a terrifying aura that forcefully pushed away the surrounding air.
"But don’t think you can escape tonight just because you’ve reached the King’s Body realm..."
"This is terrible! The Sovereign is dead!"
A panicked cry cut off the Fu Family’s King’s Body mid-sentence. He fell silent as rage boiled up within him.
"XIANG WANSHENG!!"
His furious roar echoed throughout the entire Royal Palace and even beyond its walls.
Done with words, the Fu Family’s King’s Body unleashed his Domain. A translucent, silvery-white sphere materialized. Inside it, currents of water shot about like silver snakes, their power rivaling that of swords as they pierced through walls and earth, enveloping the mass of surging fog.
BANG!
The dense fog exploded. Pitch-black, seemingly tangible lines shot out like a spiderweb, rapidly sweeping forth and condensing into a spherical Domain of its own to meet the attack head-on.
Inside this Domain, a formless Demon Fiend with seven heads and over a dozen arms spewed forth wisps of fog.
HSSSSSS~
BAM! BAM! BAM!
The pitch-black and silvery-white spheres—the two Domains—collided, clashing violently in mid-air.
On the ground below, most of the dozen or so retreating figures were intercepted, and they began to carve a bloody path through the crowds of guards.
Screams, roars, and shouts filled the air.
The vast Royal Palace was thrown into utter chaos.
「In the northeast corner of the Royal Palace, at the treasure vault.」
"You two, go help."
Zhang Tao, clad in dark armor, strode out of the main hall. With furrowed brows, he said in a deep voice, "I’m here, and we have the Array. Nothing will happen here. But we can’t let the Sovereign’s assassin escape!"
"Yes, Sir!"
Upon hearing this, his two subordinates clasped their fists in salute.
Then, they shot into the air, flying toward the sounds of battle.
"The rest of you, get moving."
Zhang Tao looked to the other guards, his voice ringing with a metallic, forceful tone. "Report anything unusual immediately. Understood?"
"Understood!"
The guards replied in unison.
The next moment, they split into four columns and began their patrols.
Zhang Tao remained at the entrance to the hall, hands clasped behind his back, his gaze fixed on the battle in the sky.
The two Domains, sustained by the King’s Bodies, collided, releasing an immense pressure. Though it didn’t reach the treasure vault, the mountain-like oppressive force was still enough to make one’s chest tighten.
As for the other skirmishes, screams of pain outnumbered roars of anger. From the clash of weapons, he could tell it was the Imperial Guards who were dying.
’The Xiang Family...’
After observing for a moment, Zhang Tao retracted his gaze and sighed.
Then, he turned and went back inside the hall.
’My responsibility is to guard the treasure vault. The vault is my first priority.’
’Fu Jintian, the Sovereign, is less important than the treasure vault.’
’After all, Fu Jintian is just a member of the Fu Family.’
’If Fu Jintian dies, he can be replaced. But if the priceless treasures in the vault are lost, it would be an immense disaster. There are no replacements.’
Walking slowly into the hall, Zhang Tao shook his head, lamenting these turbulent times.
Suddenly, his heart leaped. His Divine Wondrous power surged, ready to erupt.
VMMMM!
The air itself trembled.
An invisible force, like a mountain gale, swept over Zhang Tao. It enveloped his body and mind, freezing him in place. He was unable to move, nor did he dare to.
"..."
He opened his mouth, forcing out the words. "Sen... Senior..."
"Nngh!!!"
Suddenly, Zhang Tao’s body convulsed. His pupils pulsed, and his eyes flew wide open, his gaze filled with struggle. His throat felt as if it were clogged, and all he could manage was a choked cry.
The aura of a Half-King leaked out uncontrollably, whipping the surrounding air into a turbulent vortex.
WHOOSH!
The vortex spun like a cyclone inside the hall before crashing against the main doors with a muffled thud.
"What was that!"
"It came from the entrance of the main hall!"
Outside, the patrolling guards heard the commotion and quickly ran over.
The rattle of armor plates and the thud of heavy footsteps converged at the hall’s entrance.
"Sir..."
"I’m fine!"
Zhang Tao reined in his aura and brought his agitated Divine Wondrous power under control. Clarity returned to his eyes.
He slowly turned to face the assembled guards outside. In his usual calm voice, he said, "Nothing is wrong. I was merely dispelling some fog that had drifted in. Return to your posts."
"Yes, Sir!"
Zhang Tao was the only one in the entire hall.
It was brightly lit, and there was no one else to be seen.
