Chapter 495: What Rank 9 Means
Vane stopped trying to follow the fight within the first ten seconds.
It wasn’t a decision. His eyes simply couldn’t keep pace with what was happening in front of him, the four Transcendents and the Emperor moving through exchanges that arrived and resolved faster than his mind could assemble into anything resembling a sequence. He caught fragments instead. A flash of gold. A wall of frost climbing the hall’s far side and shattering an instant later into powder fine as mist. A sound like the world’s largest bell struck once, deep in his chest rather than his ears.
Isadora’s domain arrived first, spreading outward from where she’d landed in a slow, creeping frontier of absolute cold, the air itself losing its capacity to hold warmth wherever the frost touched it. Vane felt it reach the edge of where he lay and stop there, deliberate, sparing him and the others without her seeming to spend any conscious attention on the choice at all.
Inside that frozen ground, the Emperor moved like something the cold hadn’t been informed about yet.
Golden light bloomed around him in answer, not an attack exactly, more a statement, warmth radiating outward in a slow pulse that met Isadora’s advancing frost and simply refused to yield an inch of ground to it. Where the two forces touched, the air itself screamed, a high, keening note that made Vane’s teeth ache from thirty feet away.
Ryuken closed the distance in the same instant, Iron Heaven’s convergence arriving whole, and Vane watched him land four strikes in succession, each one a blur too fast to separate from the last, before the Emperor’s palm caught the fifth an inch from his chest.
"Good," the Emperor said, and Vane only caught the word because the hall had gone otherwise silent in the half second between exchanges. "That’s closer."
Evangeline appeared behind him without any visible transition, black dress unmoving even as the space around her seemed to fold, and Heaven’s Fall arrived as something Vane couldn’t properly see at all, a pressure more than a strike, the stone beneath the Emperor’s feet simply giving way into rubble the instant before he wasn’t standing on it anymore.
He’d moved. Vane hadn’t seen him move. One moment the floor was collapsing under where he’d been, the next he was ten feet clear of it, already meeting Varian’s strike from a new angle entirely, the two of them locked in an exchange too fast and too close to read as anything but a blur of grey and white.
The domains kept building around all of them. Vane felt Ryuken’s presence as something like gravity, a heaviness in the air that made his own exhausted limbs feel heavier just being near it. He felt Evangeline’s as an absence, patches of the hall where sound simply stopped reaching him for fractions of a second at a time, as though her very presence edited what the world was willing to let him perceive. Isadora’s cold kept spreading, patient and total. And underneath all three, threading through and around them, the Emperor’s golden warmth pushed back against every one of them at once, never fully extinguished, never fully extinguishing anything either.
"I don’t understand what I’m looking at," Isole said, somewhere close to Vane’s left, her voice thin and disbelieving. She’d stopped trying to crawl anywhere. She was just watching, the same as he was, both of them equally useless to what was actually happening in front of them.

"None of us do," Ashe said, finally pushing herself upright against the wall, breath still ragged. "That’s the whole point of Rank 9. We’re not supposed to."
Isaac had made it as far as the wrecked doorway, still frost-armored, still unwilling to step fully into a hall where four Transcendents were fighting for their lives. He stood there instead, hands pressed flat against the frame, watching his own mother trade blows with a man whose Authority read as an error even to her Rank 9 senses, and said nothing at all, because there was nothing his own Rank could add to a fight this far above him except one more body for someone to have to protect.
Vane understood, watching four Transcendents fight for their lives against a single man and fail to press any real advantage, that he’d spent three years thinking of rank as a ladder he could eventually climb high enough to see the whole shape of. He understood now that the ladder simply ended somewhere below this, and everything above that ending point was a country he didn’t have the eyes to properly see yet.
The Emperor took a strike from Ryuken across the ribs, the first visible mark any of them had managed to leave on him all fight, a thin line of blood welling along his side. He looked down at it with something like genuine surprise.
"There it is," he said, echoing Ryuken’s own words back at him from earlier, something delighted creeping into his voice. "I did wonder if any of you still had that in you."
He didn’t slow down. If anything, the wound seemed to sharpen his attention rather than diminish it, and the pace of the exchange climbed another register Vane’s eyes couldn’t follow at all, four Transcendents and an Emperor collapsing into something too fast and too total to read as individual strikes anymore, just light and cold and pressure and sound, four domains and one overwhelming warmth all pressing against each other in the same collapsing space.
The hall’s remaining structure groaned under the strain of it. Another pillar cracked somewhere overhead, and dust sifted down through the broken skylight in a slow, indifferent curtain.
Vane watched Varian get thrown clear, rolling twice before catching himself, already turning to rejoin the fight without a visible moment of hesitation. He watched Evangeline’s black dress catch a line of golden light along one sleeve, the fabric smoking faintly where it touched. He watched Isadora’s frost finally reach a wall the Emperor’s warmth hadn’t managed to hold, and the whole section of stone crystallized white and brittle in an instant, only for the Emperor to simply not be standing anywhere near it a moment later.
They were holding. That much Vane could tell, watching from the floor with his whole body screaming exhaustion at him. Four Transcendents, working together, were genuinely holding an Emperor who should have, by every rule Vane understood about power, ended this in the first ten seconds the way he’d ended everything else today.
They weren’t winning. He understood that with the same clarity. Every exchange cost the four of them visibly more than it cost him, small wounds accumulating on Ryuken’s forearms, on Evangeline’s sleeve, on Isadora’s own frost-pale hands, while the Emperor’s single visible cut along his ribs seemed, if anything, to be closing already.
"This is what it actually costs," Vane said, quiet, mostly to himself. "This is what it takes to even make him bleed once."
Nobody answered him. There wasn’t an answer that would have made the fact any smaller, and above them, the five figures kept moving through exchanges too fast and too vast for anyone still lying on the floor to properly follow, four domains and one boundless warmth, the true shape of Rank 9 finally, terribly, on full display.
