Chapter 492: Quiet

Isole found them first, cutting through the wrecked hall at a dead run, both halves of Samsara still humming faint along her arms from whatever she’d left behind at her own front. She took one look at Nyx, opal-eyed and shaking against Vane’s chest, and something in her face loosened with relief before hardening again just as fast.

"We don’t have long," she said. "Word’s already moving. Half the surviving faculty know what happened here."

Ashe arrived seconds later, blade still bloodied, a fresh cut along one cheekbone she hadn’t stopped to tend. Valerica came in behind her, gravity still faintly bending the air around her hands from whatever she’d been holding together at the stairwell. Neither of them asked what had happened between Vane and Nyx. Both of them saw it plainly enough in how he was still holding her.

"The northern corridor’s clearing out," Ashe said. "Isaac’s holding, barely. We need to move her somewhere defensible before the rest of the faculty responds to this."

They didn’t get the chance.

Six figures came through the hall’s side entrance within the minute, three instructors Vane didn’t recognize and three senior students in half-torn robes, all of them stopping short at the sight of the wrecked podium, the frozen faculty still locked mid-motion nearby, Sael still slumped against the stage.

One of the instructors, an older man with a Grandmaster’s bearing, found Nyx first, and his expression went from shock to something colder within a single breath.

"That’s her," he said. "That’s the one who did this."

"She’s not doing anything now," Vane said, stepping fully in front of her without seeming to decide to. "Look at her. It’s over."

"Seven faculty are frozen where they stand, Sael Varro is on the ground with cracked ribs, and half the Academic District is on fire from students fighting each other because of whatever she unleashed." The instructor’s voice climbed, sharp with a fear he was clearly trying to disguise as authority. "She needs to be restrained. Now. Before whatever’s left of that thing decides to finish what it started."

"There’s nothing left to restrain." Isole’s voice cut flat and precise across the hall, both halves of Samsara flaring faintly at her sides. "I can read her condition from here. The Dreamscape’s unrestrained output is gone. What’s standing in front of you is a girl who nearly killed herself doing something she never chose to start."

"That’s not your call to make."

"It’s not yours either," Ashe said, blade settling level, Warlord’s crimson pressure beginning to bleed along her arms. "You want to restrain her, you go through us first. All of us."

One of the senior students, younger and clearly less certain than the instructors flanking him, took a half step back. The other two held their ground, hands hovering near weapons, and for a long, taut moment the hall held on the edge of becoming something violent all over again.

Sael, still on the ground, lifted her head enough to speak, voice raw and thin. "Stand down, Reinholt." The Grandmaster’s eyes flicked to her, surprised. "I felt what she did to me. It wasn’t malice. Ask me again in an hour if you still doubt it, but stand down now."

The instructor called Reinholt hesitated, some of the certainty draining out of his stance at hearing it from someone who’d actually been on the receiving end.

"You don’t understand what she is," the Grandmaster said, quieter now, almost pleading. "What she did today. If word of this reaches the capital before we’ve contained it ourselves, the consequences won’t just fall on her. They’ll fall on this entire Academy."

"Then contain the story," Valerica said, gravity settling heavy and deliberate around her own stance. "Don’t contain her. She’s not a threat standing in front of you right now. She’s a girl who just went through something none of you have any framework for, and the only thing making this more dangerous is six armed people deciding she’s still the emergency."

The instructor’s jaw tightened. He looked at Nyx, still shaking, still held upright mostly by Vane’s arms around her, and something in his face wavered, the fear and the authority both losing ground to something more uncertain.

"The panel will want answers," he said finally. "Today. Not eventually."

"They can have answers," Isole said. "Once she’s stable enough to give them properly. Not before."

Nobody moved for a long moment. The distant sounds of the wider chaos rolled on beyond the hall’s walls, fainter now, the fighting elsewhere finally starting to wind down as whatever had spread outward from Nyx’s break lost its momentum without her actively feeding it.

The Grandmaster looked at his two remaining instructors, some silent calculation passing between them, and finally, stiffly, stepped back.

"This isn’t finished," he said. "Whatever happens next, this isn’t finished."

"I know," Vane said. "Nothing about today is finished. Give her the hour anyway."

The six of them retreated the way they’d come, murmuring among themselves, and the hall settled back into something that almost resembled quiet, five of them standing in the wreckage of a ceremony that had started, an eternity ago now, as the proudest day of Nyx’s life.

Nyx let out a breath she’d clearly been holding the entire confrontation, sagging further against Vane’s chest.

"They’re not wrong to be afraid," she said, quiet. "I nearly killed people today. People who never did anything to me directly. That doesn’t just go away because I’m crying about it now."

"We’ll deal with that," Ashe said. "All of it. Together. Not today."

"Today we get you somewhere safe," Isole said, already moving to check the black cracks along Nyx’s arms, gold light gathering soft at her fingertips. "The rest waits."

Vane let himself breathe properly for what felt like the first time in hours. Nyx’s shaking had eased into something closer to ordinary exhaustion, her head resting against his shoulder, and around them the hall’s wreckage held still, patient, waiting to be cleaned up by people who weren’t any of them, not today.

Isole finished checking the cracks along Nyx’s arms, gold light easing the worst of the strain out of them, and looked up at Vane with something almost like relief crossing her usually composed face.

"She’ll heal," Isole said. "Given time. Given rest. Given people who don’t treat her like a threat the moment she’s finished being one."

"We’re not going anywhere," Ashe said, already scanning the hall’s exits out of old habit, unable to fully stand down even now. "Whatever comes next, we’re not going anywhere."

For a moment, just a moment, something like genuine peace settled over the wrecked hall, five people who loved each other standing together in the ruin of a day that had tried to take one of them away completely and hadn’t quite managed it.

Then, at the far end of the hall, the great outer gate began to open.

It moved slowly, ancient hinges groaning under weight they hadn’t carried in years, golden afternoon light spilling through the widening gap in a shape that made every hair on Vane’s arms rise before he’d consciously registered why.

A single figure stepped through the gate.

Vane’s mouth went dry.
