Chapter 791: Chapter 748: Return to Gotham
"Is it over?"
Briss looked at the two people who had fallen out of the Teleportation Gate and asked blankly, while the rest of the Legendary Squad hadn’t even finished a meal.
These people really have it too easy normally; their combat readiness is truly worrying, but maybe it’s just that Alfred’s cooking is too good.
As if sensing Su Ming’s thoughts, Alfred, who had been standing in the shadows serving as a statue, nodded slightly to Su Ming, a noble and reserved smile on his face.
"Still missing something. If we want to return to that Earth, we’ll have to use the Wave Rider; the Teleportation Gate can’t go through."
Su Ming didn’t explain much further, and a flash of light in Briss’s eyes told him she had surely noted down another piece of information.
No helping it, Batman is just Batman.
"I can’t go with you," she said directly, admitting she couldn’t be of help.
Cindy naturally nodded and turned her gaze to the Bat in the darkness. Those densely packed green eyes were quite interesting:
"If we’re on that Earth, I can’t last more than two hours. A special force will constantly change me."
Briss turned around to continue operating the computer, monitoring her Earth, seemingly detached from the whole situation, but she still offered an explanation.
"You don’t have X Metal. Just relying on armor made of Promethium Metal and N Metal, plus willpower, two hours is the limit."
"Ha? You think you understand now?" Cindy sneered, hating Batman’s pretentiousness: "Why don’t I stay and watch the monitors for you, and you go with him, see how long you last?"
Briss didn’t glance sideways, squeezing a few syllables from the corner of her mouth: "I have no need to prove that."
Su Ming interjected in their conversation; these petty matters didn’t need to be argued over who was stronger. He would soon finish this rewrite, and lasting longer wouldn’t matter then.
"Cindy’s coming with me." Seeing she still intended to speak, Su Ming waved his hand, signaling her to wait until he finished: "Before the world restores, the danger we can encounter is limited. Two hours should be enough to investigate and find someone to solve the problem. All Briss has to do is ensure the Wave Rider doesn’t malfunction."
Briss continued to look at the large screen in front of her, illuminated by various images. Her black lipstick cracked into a small slit.
"There won’t be any problems."
Sarah wiped her mouth with a napkin, nudging Ray with her shoulder to ask in a low voice: "Found out where they’re keeping the people?"
Atom Hero tugged at the corner of his mouth, likewise holding a juice glass to cover his response: "Haven’t found the hostages. Let’s just cooperate honestly. This Batman is much harder to deal with than the one in our world."
"Cough, cough!" At some point, Alfred appeared behind them, standing elegantly in between them, bowing slightly: "Mr. Palmer, please don’t blow bubbles in your cup while eating. It’s very improper behavior."
Atom Hero shuddered, like a student caught by a teacher watching adult films in class, and stood up proactively.
"Sorry, my mistake, don’t hit me."
Alfred nodded once in silence and left without a sound.
People around the dining table looked at each other, and not to mention Batman, even the Butler Hero was beyond what they could handle.
The group sent glances to Sarah, signaling her to abandon plans for forceful rescue of Ji You. Spending a few more hours meant nothing, right?
But apart from sighing, what could Sarah do? The team spirit was gone, and it was hard to lead a team.
Unlike her naive teammates, she had a fling with Green Arrow, who was like a toned-down Batman. That was already quite dark.
Thinking of getting free from Batman was probably not that easy. It was just waiting to be tied to his tank and dragged into dealing with the Origin Wall fracture.
For someone like herself, she might be used as cannon fodder by Briss? Like fighting Laughing Bat’s new pet Robin Hounds or wielding shovels to dig secret hideouts?
She shivered.
It had to be said; she guessed some of it right. Su Ming didn’t regard the Legendary Squad’s combat power seriously; like a well-fed person unaware of a starving one.
For Briss, who arduously defended Earth -11 alone, the situation was different.
Though similar in strength to ordinary people, their sense of justice was quite rare, just like herself just another ordinary person, and it didn’t affect her fighting prowess, did it?
She’d heard that in other cosmos Batman had an assistant named Robin, a kind of bird’s name.
White Canary is also a bird, such a coincidence...
Su Ming, clueless about what Briss was plotting, finished arranging the tactics and waited for the departure. The Legendary Squad, under Briss’s cold gaze, became restless and lost their appetite, wrapping up the meal in no time.
One by one, they forced awkward smiles while leading him and Cindy onto the spaceship, as the Wave Rider set off once again.
Briss controlled the closing of the Bat Cave’s top, resting her elbows on the chair armrest, fingers interlaced under her chin, quietly contemplating in the darkness.
Meanwhile, Alfred began cleaning up the dishes and plates on the dining table, his gestures ever so graceful.
"Transfer the hostages to post No. 7, start the psychological suggestion process, and keep an eye on these people’s hobbies for me," Briss’s voice drifted softly.
"If it’s Lady Lance, she likes women. You might try to captivate her with feminine charm."
Alfred sarcastically commented on his lady’s instructions in a calm tone, but as always, he’d fulfill her requests.
Briss rolled her eyes, quietly turning away.
......................
"This is nothing like Gotham."
Landing, Su Ming and Cindy appeared in a narrow alley, with the Wave Rider behind them cloaking and ascending. It would come back in an hour and a half to pick them up. Cindy had a locator transmitter on her wrist.
That complaint a moment ago was from her because the Gotham now was entirely different from the one she knew.
Maybe the architecture was the same, and the air pollution too, but without the street hooligans and mafia, something felt missing.
Perhaps it simply wasn’t chaotic; the city had lost its soul.
Su Ming checked their position; they weren’t far from the Old Harbor District, a rather peripheral part of Gotham, with large tracts of wasteland and abandoned old buildings.
Even though Cindy grumbled, she was already prepared.
For two people whose minds were basically aligned, they could skip the process of discussing tactics. The preparation before combat had already clarified their actions and division of labor.
First, deal with transportation. Although the area was secluded, it wasn’t devoid of passing vehicles, of course without monocycle options for them.
Fortunately, being in a harmonious society, having a gun was quite something.
Cindy boldly walked to the middle of the road, shooting down the left and right side mirrors of an oncoming vehicle with two bangs, easily securing a means of transportation for them.
The vehicle sped away, leaving behind only a pale-faced man obediently lying by the roadside, crying and breathing the exhaust that once belonged to his beloved car.
