Chapter 502: Chapter 18: How About a Family Tree for the 3 of Us

"What do you mean, ’making trouble’? I just want to be in the same clan registry as my great-granddaughter, how is that..." Old Master Gu trailed off, then his eyes lit up as if he’d thought of something. "After I leave the clan, how about the three of us start our own registry?"

...

The corner of Gu Shuo’s mouth twitched.

Ye Qianning mentally facepalmed. ’A clan registry for just three people... Only Old Master Gu could come up with something like that and actually say it out loud...’

Everyone in the main hall was rendered speechless...

The four elders were equally speechless, their gazes turning in unison to the little girl.

’She’s been well-fed, with a healthy, vibrant look about her. But no matter how lovely she is, she’s still someone else’s child.’

’What on earth has possessed Old Master Gu? When the branch families said he was connected to a child from the Xiang family, we didn’t believe it.’

But seeing this situation now, they couldn’t help but feel that those suspicions were almost certainly true.

Zhan Chi couldn’t even be bothered to speak. ’A clan registry for three people? The old master sure knows how to dream big!’

Qian Fu and Qian Fanji were unconcerned. Old Master Gu had a habit of saying nonsensical things; it was best to just let his words go in one ear and out the other.

Even if he was serious, it would still depend on whether the other three families agreed.

"Grandfather, you..." Gu Shuo was at a loss for words to argue back.

Old Master Gu shot him a glare and stood up straighter, his posture radiating a challenging air, as if to say, ’I’d like to see anyone dare oppose me.’

"Old Master Gu, you are the backbone of the Gu family," one of the elders said gravely. "The Gu family has numerous descendants in its direct line. You may want to leave the clan registry for Gu Shuo’s sake, but don’t forget that your grandson, Gu Shuo, is only one among many."

’Leaving the ancestral registry for a single grandson... Has he not thought about the rest of the Gu family at all?’

"The family assets have already been divided. They all fend for themselves. When I’m old, I won’t need them to serve me, so this is none of their business." Old Master Gu saw clearly how much genuine affection there was in the Gu family.

’If it weren’t for the family fortune, who would bother fawning over an old man like me?’

"Since you’ve put it that way, Old Master Gu, we understand your intentions," the elder said. "We do not have the clan registry with us. We will personally bring it to the Gu family estate tomorrow." Without waiting for a reply, he turned. "Let’s go."

The other elders turned with grim faces and followed him out of the main hall.

Everyone watched the elders leave, and the hall fell silent for a moment.

"Old bastards," Old Master Gu cursed toward the doorway. "Give them an inch and they take a mile."

"Grandfather, being removed from the clan registry is such a serious matter. How can you be so stubborn?"

Gu Shuo’s expression was grim, his fists clenching inside his sleeves. ’I absolutely cannot let Grandfather be dragged down because of me.’

"It’s not stubbornness. I’m serious," Old Master Gu insisted, his tone anything but joking. "You’re not in the registry, and my great-granddaughter isn’t in it either. What’s the point of an old man like me being in there all alone? We might as well start a new one."

"Old Master Gu, that’s a clan registry we’re talking about! You think it’s your personal vegetable patch you can just start whenever you please?" Zhan Chi finally couldn’t hold back anymore. This was just too wild.

"Clan registries are created by people. How do you know the first person in your family’s registry wasn’t just starting a new branch? Everything is man-made. If I start a new clan registry and get it officially recorded with the authorities, it will be just as valid." Rules are rigid, but people are flexible. If there’s no registry, just make a new one. The lineage will continue all the same.

’The old master really is stubborn.’

Zhan Chi had to admire Old Master Gu’s silver tongue; no one could ever win an argument with him.

"Great-Grandfather, you can’t think that way," Ye Qianning said, reaching up to take Old Master Gu’s large hand.

’Although Old Master Gu’s reasoning made a certain kind of sense, starting a new clan registry was definitely not a wise choice.’

"As long as I can be in the same registry as my little girl, I’ll be happy." He was a man with one foot in the grave; he should just do whatever his heart desired.

"Whether we’re in the same clan registry or not, you’ll still be my great-grandfather. That’s something that will never change."
