Chapter 23: Chapter 23: The Lion’s Den

Lucian sat cross-legged in the dark building, back against the wall, and pulled up his full status.

The level 7 rewards was quite good. Bloodline seal down to 91%. Two Comprehension Pills — each one capable of assisting in the understanding of an element to ignite a star. Single use only. The Zombie Slayer title was a nice bonus — sure hit against zombies meant his Blood Manipulation internal attacks would never miss, and the ten percent damage increase stacked with everything else. And a thousand system credits, bringing his total to twelve hundred.

Not bad for a day’s work.

He dismissed the status window and closed his eyes. His body was tired — not physically, the regeneration handled that — but mentally. The constant fighting, the calculations, the mana management. Even a vampire needed rest.

He’d just started to drift when his ears twitched.

Shuffling.

Coming from the ground floor.

Lucian’s eyes snapped open. He melted into the corner of the room, pressing himself into the shadow where the wall met the ceiling.

The footsteps grew closer.

A Mid Neophyte zombie appeared in the doorway.

It didn’t see him.

Lucian dropped from the ceiling.

Schlick.

The Light Blade took its head off before it could make a sound. The body crumpled silently.

Then Lucian’s Blood Sense screamed.

Every zombie within two hundred meters — dozens of them — had just changed direction. Not wandering anymore. All of them, converging on his exact location.

How the fuck did they sense me?

Lucian bolted.

He burst out of the building through a ground-floor window, glass shattering around him, and hit the street at full sprint. Behind him, the zombie horde erupted from every doorway, every alley, every dark corner — a tide of grey flesh pouring after him with coordinated precision.

He ran.

Through streets and alleys, vaulting over wrecked cars, ducking under collapsed awnings, his vampiric speed carrying him far faster than any human could manage. But the zombies kept coming. Like a pack of wolves herding prey.

The buildings thinned. The streets widened. And ahead — a forest. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Lucian’s feet hit grass and he kept running, plunging into the tree line. The moment he crossed the threshold, the sounds behind him changed.

The moaning stopped.

The footsteps stopped.

Everything stopped.

Lucian skidded to a halt and turned.

The zombie horde stood at the forest edge. Hundreds of them, their dead eyes staring into the trees. But not one of them crossed.

They just... waited.

Eerie silence filled the forest. No birds. No insects. No wind rustling through leaves. Just absolute, unnatural quiet.

Lucian’s frown deepened.

Something is definitely wrong here.

He moved deeper into the forest, scanning with Blood Sense. Nothing. No signatures, no heartbeats, no life of any kind. The forest was dead in every sense of the word.

He found a cave — small, hidden behind a rocky outcrop — and slipped inside.

"I better improve my strength quickly and get the hell out of here," he muttered, settling against the cave wall. "Something is weird about this. And how the fuck did those zombies sense me?"

He pulled a small pill from his shadow storage — pale gold, faintly glowing, warm to the touch.

Comprehension Pill.

He looked at it for a moment, then glanced at the second one still in storage.

"I better keep the other one for Clara or Ryan."

He swallowed the pill and closed his eyes.

The effect was immediate.

It was like someone had turned on a light inside his mind. The light element, which he’d always wielded instinctively, suddenly became clear. He could see its nature, its structure, the way it interacted with darkness, with mana, with the very fabric of reality.

He dove into his Sea of Consciousness.

The Light Palace blazed before him, two stars burning in its spire. Lucian poured his comprehension into it, feeding the understanding from the pill into the raw mana that filled the socket.

Time lost meaning.

Five hours passed in what felt like minutes.

Pure elemental energy surged through the palace, and Lucian fought to keep his aura contained, suppressing the energy flare before it could leak out and attract the things waiting in this forest.

╚═════════════════════════╝

The knowledge settled into his mind — Light Prism’s defensive applications, Light Bolt’s firing mechanics, the mana costs, the incantations, the limitations. All of it, absorbed instantly.

Lucian opened his eyes sensing multiple human signatures entering the forest from the opposite side. Four of them. One Early Core Realm. One Mid Neophyte. Two Peak Neophytes.

Lucian left the cave and moved silently through the trees toward them.

"I’m telling you, we’re being herded."

Ryan’s voice cut through the forest silence, low and tense.

Behind him, Clara, Rose, and Dean followed in tight formation, weapons ready, senses extended.

"The zombies are likely connected by some kind of hive mind," Ryan continued. "This isn’t the first time we’ve seen them coordinating. After we sneaked out of the academy quietly and encountered that one normal zombie — Dean finished it without a sound — but they all knew our location immediately. Multiple zombies cornered us within seconds."

Dean frowned. "How do you know that?"

"Because it’s happened before. At the academy. The coordinated attack on the dome, the way they all converged simultaneously. And now this — driving us out of the city and into this forest." Ryan’s jaw tightened. "I’m guessing we just entered the lion’s den."

Silence.

The forest around them was suffocatingly quiet — no animals, no wind, no sound but their own footsteps. The trees stood like silent sentinels, their branches bare and skeletal despite the season.

Dean stopped.

His head turned sharply toward a large oak tree to their left, his Early Core Realm senses probing the darkness behind it.

"Who’s there?"

Everyone turned.

The shadows behind the tree shifted.
