Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Two Stars

Lucian flexed his fingers.

The movement was simple — something he’d done a million times — but everything felt different now. His fingers responded faster, sharper, with a precision that bordered on unsettling. He could feel the individual muscles, the tendons sliding beneath his pale skin, the faint pulse of blood energy humming through every fiber.

He raised his right hand and called on Blood Manipulation.

A bead of crimson seeped from his fingertip — his own blood, drawn willingly, painless. It floated in the air in front of him, a perfect sphere of deep red that caught the faint light filtering through the boarded window.

Hardening.

The sphere crystallized instantly, shifting from liquid to solid with a sound like cracking ice. It was now a perfect ruby bead — hard, smooth, and dense enough that Lucian suspected it could chip steel.

Liquify.

It melted back to liquid, dropping through the air before he caught it with his will, suspending it motionlessly.

Shape.

The blood stretched, thinned, elongated — forming a needle, then a wire, then a flat disk, then a spiral. Each form was precise, clean, effortless. As if he were sculpting clay rather than manipulating his own life force.

Blade.

A crimson sword materialized in his grip — three feet long, razor-edged, gleaming with an inner light.

"Nice," Lucian whispered, and the blade dissolved back into blood that sank back into his palm, the puncture sealing instantly.

He closed his eyes and activated Blood Sense.

The world exploded into a web of crimson threads. Through the walls, through the floors, through the darkness — he could feel them. Ryan and the five children, their heartbeats pulsing like soft drums in the room down the hall. Their blood flows were visible in his mind’s eye — Ryan’s strong and steady, the children’s faster, more fragile.

Beyond the orphanage walls, more pulses. Distant, sluggish, wrong — the zombies. Their blood moved like sludge through dead veins, a sickening rhythm that Lucian could identify instantly.

And far, far away — faint, barely detectable — other signatures. Living humans, scattered through the city, hiding and trying to survive.

"Two hundred meters," Lucian murmured, opening his eyes. "It’ll grow, right?."

He pulled up his status window.

Twenty times human strength. Eight times speed. Thirty-six times stamina. And the bloodline boost jumped from seven percent to twenty-eight.

The full transition had been worth it.

But the cultivation base hadn’t changed. Still Mid Neophyte. The vampiric body gave him raw power, but raw power without cultivation was a blunt instrument — effective against weaker enemies, useless against anyone who actually knew how to fight.

Time to fix that.

Lucian sat cross-legged on the floor, closed his eyes, and began Basic Mana Circulation.

The familiar rhythm took hold — mana flowing through his meridians in a slow, steady loop, gathering in his lower dantian, compressing, expanding, circulating. But now there was something else in the flow. Blood energy — crimson threads weaving through the blue-white mana, separate but harmonious, like two rivers running parallel without mixing.

Sea of Consciousness.

His awareness shifted inward, and the physical world fell away.

He was standing in a vast, dark space — his Sea of Consciousness. The last time he’d been here, there had been only one structure: the Light Palace, a gleaming white building with a single star flickering in its crown.

Now there were two.

The Light Palace stood on the left, unchanged — white marble, golden trim, one star burning bright in its upper spire.

On the right stood something *new*.

It was a palace, technically, but it looked like nothing Lucian had ever seen. Built from crystallized blood — deep crimson, almost black in places, with veins of brighter red pulsing through its walls like living arteries. It was beautiful.

The Blood Palace.

Lucian approached it. The air around it was *hot* — not physically, but spiritually, like standing near a fire that burned on a frequency normal senses couldn’t detect. He reached out to touch the wall—

And stopped.

There were no stars.

The Light Palace had nine empty sockets in its spire, waiting to be filled. But the Blood Palace had... nothing. No sockets. No slots. No visible mechanism for ignition.

As if the limiters had been removed entirely.

*It’s not ready,* Lucian realized. *The bloodline seal is still at ninety-four percent. The palace is here, but the system to ignite it hasn’t unlocked yet.*

He turned away from the Blood Palace and walked toward the Light Palace.

Inside, the single ignited star burned steadily — a sphere of white light that pulsed with his mana. Around it, eight empty sockets waited, dark and cold.

Second star.

Lucian sat beneath the spire and began to meditate.

---

A day passed.

Lucian sat motionless in the dark room, his body sustained by blood energy alone, his consciousness entirely focused on the second star socket in his Light Palace. Mana poured into it — slow, steady, relentless — filling the socket like water filling a vessel.

It was delicate work. Too fast and the mana would dissipate. Too slow and it would stagnate. He had to find the exact rhythm, the precise balance between pressure and patience.

The children ate. Ryan cultivated. The zombies shambled through the streets outside, indifferent to the small miracle occurring within the orphanage walls.

And then, in the twenty-sixth hour—

The star ignited.

╚═════════════════════════╝

Lucian opened his eyes.

Light Steps. A movement spell. The ability to close short distances instantly by channeling light through his feet. Combined with Earth Evasion, it would make him nearly untouchable in close combat.

Now he just need to breakthrough.

He needed to break through to Late Neophyte.

The mana in his dantian was dense — thicker than it had been a day ago, compressed by the constant circulation. But the barrier between Mid and Late Neophyte wasn’t just about quantity. It was about quality. The mana had to reach a critical density where it began to behave differently — where it stopped being a pool and started behaving like a compressed gas, straining toward liquid.

Lucian closed his eyes again and pushed.

---

Three days total.

Ryan stood outside the locked door, arms crossed, foot tapping with an impatient expression.

He’d broken through to Mid Neophyte during the second day — the barrier crumbling faster than he’d expected, as if the mana in the orphanage itself was richer, denser, more cooperative than it had been anywhere else he’d ever cultivated. His mana capacity had nearly doubled, and his Ice Creation ability felt sharper, more responsive.

But Lucian still hadn’t come out.

Ryan had checked on him twice — pressing his ear to the door, listening to the slow, steady rhythm of Lucian’s breathing.

The kids were getting restless. Mei kept asking questions Ryan couldn’t answer. The youngest boy — the one with the rabbit — had started crying again last night, wanting to go home.

Ryan understood. He wanted to go home too. He wanted to find Clara. He wanted to stop hiding in the dark while the world ended around them.

He reached for the doorknob.

The door opened from the inside.

Lucian stood in the doorway, and Ryan took an involuntary step back.

He looked... different. Paler, if that was even possible. His silver hair hung past his shoulders, loose and bright. And his eyes — Ryan blinked, sure he was seeing things — his eyes were pure, deep crimson, like fresh blood.

"Lucian... your eyes—"

"I know."

Lucian’s voice was the same — calm, cold, slightly arrogant — but there was something beneath it now.

Ryan stared at him for a long moment. Then he shook his head and forced a smirk.

"Took you long enough. You said two days and it’s been three now."

Lucian smiled.

"You were able to break through thanks to that." He tilted his head toward the room behind him. "The mana density in this building is higher than normal. Probably a natural mana vein beneath the foundation. The Church of the Dawn knew what they were doing when they built here."

Ryan blinked. "How do you—"

"Lucky guess." Lucian stepped past him into the hallway. "Grab the kids. We’re leaving."

Ryan looked at him — at the crimson eyes, the pale skin, the way Lucian’s shadow seemed to move independently of the light source — and decided he didn’t want to ask.

He turned to the storage room door.

"Mei. Kids. Time to go."

From inside, the sound of scrambling — small feet, whispered voices, the rustle of movement.

Ryan looked back at Lucian, who was standing at the end of the hallway, staring at the front door with an expression that was equal parts determination and hunger.

"Alright," Ryan said quietly. "Time to go."
