Chapter 66: A Cold Blood Welcome
What’s going on here? My eyes scanned the ground, gauging the cautiousness in the way they approached us.
Their sword drawn, their eyes focused as they stepped closer with careful steps.
It was too obvious from their cautiousness they knew I had magic.
Walter. Quinette stepped forward,
I lowered my hand, stopping her from acting.
A guard then stepped forward, breaking through the crowd of guards circled around us. A man of great stature, a huge blade at his hip, his eyes swept over us with scrutiny.
"I suppose you’re the one meant to explain what this is?
You’re arrested for the murder of Baran Riverdial, and by order of the court you’ve been sentenced to death."
"Without a trial?"
The man lifted his blade, pointed at me. "You don’t deserve one."
The timing was too perfect, like they were waiting for us. The only person who knew we were coming here was Madel.
That snake had sold us off.
Still there was more to gain. The injustice granting straight death punishment without a trial spoke of their intent — this wasn’t for justice but removing an obstacle.
But by doing so they’d break the deal with the dragon kingdom, killing me despite knowing they had signed the right of a human off to them.
If removing me, they believed, would be a way of clearing the road to control more seats at the council of Human and Dragons, they weren’t well aware of how disadvantageous it would be to them.
Still, in that light, I don’t need the dragon kingdom to protect me.
"We can do this two ways, gentlemen." I spoke to the crowd of guards around us. "One, you let me walk into the council — I have my meeting coordinated — or you’ll all end up as collateral damage. The choice is yours."
The huge guard, face hardened, swung for his sword. As the blade was about to sink out —
"Quinette, do your thing."
Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh.
Heads were sent flying, sliced clean from their necks, their bodies staggered, blood gushed out their necks, spraying into the air like a fountain.
As the air around was sprayed crimson,
One by one, headless bodies fell to the ground.
We didn’t need to even move a muscle, with Quinette [Intended Cut]
I spotted a drop on my cheek, smeared it off. As I looked over my shoulder,
Quinette’s eyes shifted from darkness, dissolved into the light pupils.
"It’s final, I’ll make sure to decapitate Maltie when we meet again."
"Not yet, Quinette. She still has punishment to face, than instant death."
While talking to Quinette, a raised breath caught my attention. The huge night guard stood clutching the edge of his neck in a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding.
Still, blood seeped through his fingers, trailing down his neck, collarbone, soaking his cloak.
"What... kind of magic is that." He raised his sword in defence, crawling back.
"What did you expect? I throw ice shards at you? Why should I raise a finger when someone loyal to me can do it in a second."
I shook my head, walked past the guard as he lay on the ground, motionless, life draining from him slowly.
The hinges of the door creaked open, revealing the corridor, light properly from bulbs, powered my mana stones.
But more importantly, more guards — they tensed on sighting us. Then blades drawn. A guard peered over my shoulder, outside, seeing his comrade lying in his own blood. His eyes widened and slowly he backed up.
However, not all of them were smart enough.
"Attack!" Three guards launched themselves at me, followed by the remaining swarm.
I exhaled. I’ll take you guys out myself. My shadow stretched, joining with their shadows.
In a blink of an eye they were all pinned to the ground, their shadows crept up their bodies like thin hands pulling them, faces to the ground, dented and crushed deeper.
They weren’t dead, groaning as they struggled with the pressure of my shadow pressing down on them.
"Shall we." In a composed manner, I lent Quinette a hand. She took my hand, locked her arm around mine as we walked through the carpet of guards pinned to the ground.
Till we eventually reached the main room, the large auditorium, a long table stretched at the center of it all, chairs to be seated.
Each chair had a crest and a title tag on it. My village didn’t have a royal crest, so I didn’t know which was Baran’s spot at the table. But one thing was sure — they had placed a replacement, as all the chairs were taken.
The auditorium was wide, with a huge glass ceiling allowing the sunlight to spill into the room, casting a spotlight on those seated.
"What are you doing here." A guard spotted the two of us at the door, just stepping in. Our presence drew attention from all present, even those seated. "You shouldn’t be—" The guard drew closer; on getting a full picture of my face, he paused. Then reached for a parchment, pulled it out, he looked at the parchment then me.
Immediately his sword drew out.
"Argh!" He charged at me.
How foolish are these guards, it stunned me.
"Halt!" A voice roared at the guard. He abandoned his charge, coming to a halt, his blade still raised at me.
I traced the voice to a woman in a pristine sea-blue dress, with precious stones studded around the dress, the sunlight fractured in the gems, giving her a sparkly look. She shot up from her chair. Her thick curls fell over her shoulder in waves.
She held her gaze on me. I recognized her face partially from the dragons, during the time Baran had sold me to the dragon kingdom. She was there.
She then shifted her stare to the guard.
"You cease to understand your capacity, charging recklessly at someone who walked through hundreds of guards untouched. What difference will you make... step aside."
The guard then lowered his blade and stepped aside, following the woman’s wise words.
"It’s nice to meet you again, Walter Avant. I’m Stephanie Oregon, Princess of Rollsway Island. Please step forward and state your business here."
