Chapter 64: Chapter 64 - Smart Monsters Are Absolute Bitches
I just wanted to be a peaceful, easygoing businessman, was that too much to ask?
Sure, one of my businesses might not have been all that peaceful, I mean a mercenary company doesn’t sound all that peaceful to anyone.
But I mean it wasn’t like I was planning to use them for any nefarious deeds.
I was basically just going to compete with the adventurers guild.
People could come to us with requests, and then the mercs could decide amongst themselves if they wanted to accept said requests, after doing our due diligence of course.
I wasn’t going to use them to start declaring war all willy nilly.
And the point stays, I started that business so that I won’t have to fight.
Okay, I had been training pretty hard over the weeks I had been in this world.
And did I enjoy it?
Sure, I did, but that didn’t mean I suddenly wanted to become some kind of OP protagonist that goes around saving the world and battling demon kings, and slaying monsters.
I just liked the process of it.
And yet it seemed that everywhere I went there was some kind of battle that had to be fought.
At that time I was really starting to wonder if it wouldn’t be best for me if I simply stayed in Lofie Village all the time.
I mean I now had people I could send to complete my tasks outside the village after all.
Men who were specifically trained to take on beasts, before they evn became part of my company.
Jackpot right?
I looked down from the wall Cat and I were standing on, and there coming from the trees came a pack of seven wolves.
They were massive!
I mean they stood at least twice as high as me.
Now if you didn’t know, that’s one hell of a big doggy.
"Let me guess," I turned to Cat, who I had been about to confess to, before being so very rudely interrupted. "High-level beasts?"
Without taking her eyes off the beasts she just nodded to me.
"And exactly how high-level?"
"Wolves are among the most threatening beasts there are." She answered.
Fan-bloody-tastic, right?
Just my luck.
"Not because of individual strength though," She continued. "They are some of the most intelligent hunters there are, and their teamwork makes them very threatening."
I couldn’t help but sigh at those words.
Because if these massive variants were anything like the wolves on Earth, they would definitely not just give up and go away now that they had seen us.
"And they won’t just give up and leave if they see they can’t get to us?" I had to ask anyway though.
"No," Cat answered. "Once they catch a scent, and they have their target cornered, they almost never give up."
I knew it!
"Fine," I sighed. "Then we’ll just have to kill the bastards."
"That would be our only option, yes." Cat nodded. "However blasting them with magic from here won’t work, we might take down one or two of them, but the rest would simply retreat far enough so they’re out of range."
Aren’t smart monsters bitches to take down?
"Let’s head down," I said, creating a staircase down the back of the wall so we can go and plan our strategy with everyone else.
I finally had to let go of Cat’s waist so we could move down the staircase together, which made me hate those wolves even more.
"What’s going on?" Julia asked when we reached them at the bottom.
"A pack of high-level Grey Wolves," Cat answered.
I have to say they are very original with their naming of beasts in this world.
We now had a Forest Tiger, an Earth Boar, and apparently the big doggies were known as Grey Wolves.
Really, beasts that big should have much better names than those in my professional opinion.
And I’m very good with naming things.
I mean my mercenary company was called Julan Mercenaries after all... good right?
"How would you guys fare against one of those?" I asked the mercs who were standing around us with pretty serious expressions.
"If it’s just one or two, we should be able to handle them." Erick answered.
Which was obviously good, if Cat and I could take down two with magic that would leave two to the mercs, and one each for Julia, Cat, and me.
"Will each of us be able to handle one?" I asked Cat.
"Easily," She answered.
"Excellent, so I want you all to follow us up to the top of the wall please." I said, already turning to make my way to the top.
Our entire group made our way to the top of the wall, to find the wolves had already surrounded us.
"Erick, I want you guys to divide into groups and choose the two wolves you’re going to take on." I ordered, "But leave the two at the front to Cat and me for now, we’re going to take them out with magic from here."
"I’m going to create steps that go down to the ground, the fire should keep them from attacking you as soon as you’re on the ground," I added. "As soon as we take out the first two, Cat’s going to disperse the flames, and you’re going to deal with your marks."
"Sound good?"
"Sounds easy enough," Erick answered, although I could see the new recruits looking at me with pretty nervous gazes.
The originals seemed a lot more confident though.
Age really made everything easier.
I created the steps down to the ground, and Julia and the mercs made their way down, not before Julia gave me a goodbye peck though.
Love really was a wonderful thing.
When everyone was on the ground Cat’s and my gazes locked on the two wolves at the front.
One of them seemed to be the pack leader, he was by far the largest of them all, while the other was probably his... female? Wife?
I don’t know what the hell they would be called, but you get the idea.
"So which one do you want?" I asked.
"I’ll take the big one," Cat answered after a while of thinking.
"What, you don’t think I can handle him?" I asked jokingly.
"Fine, you can have him," Cat smiled.
"No, no, no, no take backs now." I said, waving my hands in dismissal.
"You’re such an idiot," Cat said, shaking her head, not even giving me time to think of my strategy, just immediately firing a massive fireball at the big wolf.
"Hey! That’s cheating," I laughed, firing off a bunch of earth spikes toward the other one.
Moments later two yelps were heard, and the two wolves fell on the ground... dead.
"Well... that was easy." I said, noticing now that we could have easily wiped them out from there.
Ah well, the others needed the exercise.
"We could probably just wipe them out," I said. "But let’s give the others their chance."
"Want to take down our two from here, and then just spectate the rest of the fight?" I asked.
"Sure," Cat said, a wicked smile forming on her lips.
