Chapter 62: Chapter 62 - Upgrading The Threats
A lot of different scenarios had played out in my head when Julia told me that Cat was in love with me.
There was the one where she would kick my ass because I made her sister fall in love with me, which would be bad considering it hadn’t been like I had tried to do that.
It’s not like I could switch my charm on and off at will.
Then there was the one where she told me to let Cat down softly, which would have been bad as well, seeing as I actually did like Cat.
Then there was the worst of all, the one where she’d leave me.
Now that one would have hurt like hell.
I did not however expect the one where she said that I should make Cat her... sister-wife?
Honestly I didn’t even completely know what that was.
"Your sister-wife?" I whispered.
"Yes," Julia nodded. "I’ll allow her to be your second wife."
"My second wife?" Honestly I had been so dazed by the entire experience that most of what she had said had kind of just blown past me.
I heard a deep sigh from next to me.
"Can you please stop repeating everything I say." Julia said, giving my arm a pretty strong pinch, one that was definitely going to bruise.
"I want you to take her as your wife, along with me, and make her happy. Like you make me happy."
"Okay, so let me get this straight," I said, looking down at her again as we kept moving. "You’re actually fine with me having more wives?"
Was the idea of having Cat as my second wife exciting?
Of course it was.
I mean do you guys have any idea how beautiful she is?
And not just that, she’s an amazing person as well.
She might seem a bit... cold, and distant at first, but once you get to know her, she’s incredible.
But what frightened me at that moment was that Julia was testing me.
Not that she had ever tested me before.
But I’d heard of wives testing their husband’s loyalties with their sisters sometimes, and if that was the case, I didn’t want to imagine the consequences of failing that test.
Because as you might have started to suspect just as much as I did, Julia was definitely not a wife that would simply divorce her husband.
I suspect that her form of divorce would be one where there would only be one person left standing.
And that person would definitely not be me.
"That depends entirely on the wife," Julia answered.
"So basically you’re saying that you’re going to choose my wives?" I smiled down at her.
A smile which was met by one that sent chills down my spine.
"They’ll be the only ones that survive after all."
I kid you not, that was the response I got, and she was completely serious about it too.
All of my sympathies went out to any woman that might’ve had the idea of getting close to me without Julia’s permission.
I however was not going to try and get close to any more women.
Well maybe that was a bit of a stretch, but I’d at least wait and see what Julia’s feelings toward them were.
I didn’t want their deaths on my conscience after all.
"And you are limited to three." She said, once again completely serious.
Honestly I couldn’t even believe I had managed to get one, and for another to fall in love with me, I mean it was a lot better than I ever did in my previous life.
So her casually limiting me to three was astonishing.
Did she actually believe that there would be anyone else in this world that would fall for me to that degree.
I mean sure I’m a charming bastard, but I didn’t think there would be that many women who would actually like me that much.
"I don’t think I’ll ever reach that limit," I smiled at her again. "After all, the fact that you two fell for me can already be seen as a miracle."
"You’d be surprised," I heard her mumble.
I decided that maybe it was best if we got back on topic again.
"Anyway, what the hell do you expect me to do about this?"
"Just make a move." Julia said, as if that was the most logical next step.
"And you’d describe making a move as?"
"Just grab her and kiss her."
At that point I was really starting to wonder about asking her for romantic advice.
Sure that move worked on her, but if you guys can remember correctly, it was she that grabbed me and kissed me. Which would always be a lot more successful than the other way around.
"Somehow I don’t think that would end well for me." I said.
"And why’s that?"
I might have looked down at her as if she was slightly dull at that moment, which might have garnered me a very deep scowl.
"Because if you’re wrong about this, you’ll become a very you widow." I answered.
"I’m not wrong," Julia answered, once again pinching my arm. "She’s just too stubborn to admit it, or to make a move first."
"Fine," I sighed. "I’ll think of something."
"But you have to promise me that if things go horribly wrong and she tries to kill me, you’ll at least attempt to help."
"Sure," Julia answered, a slightly scary smile on her lips. "I can’t have my husband die so soon after all."
We fell into silence for a while, me trying to think of all the different most romantic ways I could make my move on Cat.
And along with those different moves, I was also thinking of all the different possible consequences.
I knew that this had to be handled with a lot more care, and subtlety, than Julia believed it did.
With Cat’s history with men, she definitely needed to be handled with a lot of care.
As we moved, darkness slowly started to fall, the trees blocking the last rays of the sun from reaching the ground.
I was just about to call a halt for the night when a massive ruckus started all around us.
There were so many beastly roars, and groans, and almost any other noise you can imagine a beast would make.
The ground started to shake slightly, as the massive amount of noise seemed to be getting closer to us.
"What the hell is going on?!" I yelled over the noise.
"Stampede!" Julia called out.
For the first time since I met her I could see her looking for places to hide, and honestly, that scared the shit out of me.
"We need to get to cover!" Erick yelled from behind us.
"Cover where?" One of the new recruits asked. "We can’t just hide in the trees, these things can crush the trees."
Couldn’t we just travel through the forest in peace this time?
There just had to be another run in with beasts.
It’s almost as if someone out there decided to upgrade the threats every time I improved a bit.
