Chapter 2447: Story 2448: The Child Who Could Not Dream
The child opened empty eyes.
No light reflected within them.
No fear.
No hope.
No curiosity.
Only stillness.
The vision suspended above the Valley of Dawn expanded until everyone could see the forgotten world.
Gray skies stretched from horizon to horizon.
The rivers no longer flowed.
Trees stood frozen without leaves.
Cities remained intact, yet every street was empty.
Nothing had been destroyed.
Everything had simply... stopped imagining.
No songs drifted through the air.
No stories were written.
No laughter echoed between the silent buildings.
The Traveler lowered his gaze.
"This is Ashen."
The name carried unexpected sorrow.
"The first world to lose every dream."
The Witness stared into the motionless landscape.
"I never recorded its ending."
"There was no ending," the Traveler replied.
"It simply forgot how to begin again."
Noah tightened his grip on the Staff of Echoes.
The crystal sphere inside the staff trembled.
One tiny silver thread extended toward Ashen.
Then snapped.
The Staff could not reach it.
"Why?" Noah asked.
"Why can’t I help them?"
The Traveler answered quietly.
"Because dreams cannot be given."
"They must be chosen."
The child slowly stood.
He appeared no older than ten.
His clothes were faded gray.
His face carried neither sadness nor joy.
He looked toward the endless sky as though expecting something that had never arrived.
Then he spoke.
His voice barely reached the valley.
"What is a dream?"
Every Guardian froze.
Even the Guardian of Imagination could not answer.
The question was too profound.
How could someone describe color to a world that had never seen light?
Noah felt his heart ache.
The boy had never lost hope.
He had never known it.
The Traveler looked toward Noah.
"This is your first journey as Keeper."
The First Keeper stepped forward.
"You cannot fight this."
The Guardian of Courage nodded.
"You cannot command it."
The Guardian of Life smiled gently.
"You can only plant its first seed."
The Staff of Echoes glowed warmly.
Its crystal unfolded once more.
This time, it did not create light.
It created a single silver feather.
Small.
Weightless.
Ordinary.
The Traveler picked it up and placed it into Noah’s hand.
"No artifact."
"No miracle."
"Just a beginning."
Noah looked down at the feather.
"This is enough?"
The Traveler smiled.
"The greatest dreams often begin with the smallest gift."
Suddenly the Valley of Dawn disappeared.
No explosion followed.
No portal opened.
The world simply... changed.
Noah found himself standing upon a quiet road beneath Ashen’s gray sky.
The silence was overwhelming.
No birds sang.
No wind stirred.
The forgotten child stood only a few steps away.
He looked at Noah with calm, empty eyes.
"You aren’t from here."
"No."
"Why did you come?"
Noah glanced at the silver feather resting in his palm.
He remembered the apocalypse.
The Dreamer.
The Witness.
The First Nightmare.
Every lesson had led him here.
He smiled gently and held out the feather.
"I wanted to give you a story."
The child blinked for the first time.
"A story?"
Noah nodded.
"It’s about a boy who believed tomorrow could be different."
The child hesitated before accepting the feather.
The moment his fingers touched it, a tiny spark of silver appeared.
Barely visible.
Yet unmistakably real.
High above Ashen, a single gray cloud drifted apart.
For the first time in countless ages...
One ray of sunlight reached the forgotten world.
Far away, the Traveler watched with quiet satisfaction.
"The first page has been turned."
But deep beneath Ashen’s silent earth, something ancient stirred.
Not awakened by darkness.
Awakened by hope.
A pair of closed eyes slowly opened in the depths.
And an old voice whispered through the stone,
"A storyteller has returned."
