Chapter 840: Chapter 715: Kael’s Two-Sided Mirror (Part 3)
Judging by the shapes, it should be Magic Text, but it was so complicated that Conna stared at it for a long time without recognizing what it was.
"What are you doing?" At last, she couldn’t help but ask.
"Reviewing some Alchemy," Kael whispered.
"This is Alchemy?" Conna looked interestedly at the mirror covered in all sorts of Magic Text and talismans. "Why does it feel so different from when you made the map?"
"Of course it’s different." Kael said, "The stuff I made before, whether it was the map or the waterproof-and-damp-proof badge, could only barely be counted as Magic Items.
"Real Alchemy is the combination of Magic Text and magic."
Distracted while speaking, Kael accidentally moved his wand a bit too much, and wrote the Magic Text wrong.
The mirror instantly sprouted cracks, and turned into a pile of pieces.
"Sorry," Conna said a little embarrassedly.
"No worries, I didn’t expect to get it right on the first try anyway." Kael said airily, waving his wand to clear the fragments from the table, and then pulling out a new mirror.
This time, Conna kept quiet, just watching Kael’s movements from the side.
To be honest, the whole process was pretty boring—Kael drew Magic Text really slowly. For a palm-sized mirror, it took almost half an hour to fill it up.
Then the Magic Text would disappear, as if it had been covered up somehow, and at that point Kael would start drawing new Magic Text.
If he made a mistake, the mirror shattered and all previous efforts went to waste.
For two whole days, Kael fiddled with the thing nonstop, barely paying attention in class.
But as for his behavior, most professors chose to pretend not to notice—including Professor McGonagall.
Conna originally helped Kael take quite a lot of notes, but ever since a Transfiguration Class when Kael casually flicked his wand and completed Professor McGonagall’s requirement, she stopped bothering with such unnecessary things.
No wonder Professor McGonagall ignored his daydreaming in class—there really wasn’t any need to intervene.
It went on like this until the third morning after term began, when Kael finally set down his wand at the end of the first Charm Class.
Conna’s first reaction was that he’d failed again, but the next second she noticed that the mirror was still intact.
"Did you succeed?" she asked.
"More or less, just one last step left." Kael took a deep breath and tapped the mirror with his wand.
In an instant, all the Magic Text previously drawn on its surface emerged, layer upon layer, forming a complete talisman.
The mirror started shaking violently. Because it was so loud, the students around and Professor Flitwick all turned to look.
The trembling mirror split right down the middle, but it wasn’t cracks—it was like the Doubling Charm was cast, turning it into two.
Then things calmed down again, and the Magic Text talisman disappeared once more.
"Clap, clap!"
Applause sounded in the classroom.
"Amazing," Professor Flitwick walked over and eyed the two mirrors on the table. "Honestly, it’s the first time I’ve seen the making of a Two-Sided Mirror—this is an advanced product of Alchemy."
"Thanks for the compliment, Professor." Kael said with a smile.
Hearing Professor Flitwick’s words, the others craned their necks, all eager to get a better look.
Just then, the bell rang for the end of class.
Kael gathered his things and left the professor, and in the corridor, he handed one of the mirrors to Conna.
"Is this for me?"
"Of course." Kael said, "Didn’t you hear Professor Flitwick? This is a Two-Sided Mirror, only two people can use it."
Conna accepted the mirror. "How do you use it?"
"You don’t know?" Kael was a little surprised, since Two-Sided Mirrors aren’t exactly a rare treasure in the Magic Realm.
"I’ve heard of them, but never used one." Conna said.
"It’s simple," Kael said, "Just shout my name into the mirror and you’ll see me in it. This way, I won’t have to worry about missing a reply from you.
"Speaking of which, why didn’t you send a single letter during the holidays? Was the assessment that strict?"
"They said it was to prevent cheating," Conna murmured. "I didn’t receive a single letter all break."
"I see." Kael wasn’t sure what to make of it, but never having gone through the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers assessment, he just accepted it.
"Well, no need to worry anymore," Kael continued. "Whenever you need anything, just call my name into the mirror—even if Snape whisks you off somewhere else, I can help get you back."
Conna spoke in a small voice, "That’s France. Can you Apparate that far?"
"No problem—even if I can’t Apparate, I have other ways." Kael shrugged, grinning. "I know someone with tons of international travel experience, legal and otherwise, no matter how far it is, he’ll manage."
Conna didn’t say anything, just blushed a little. She looked down at the round little mirror in her hand and softly called, "Kael..."
The next second, Kael’s own mirror responded. He saw Conna’s face inside it, and glanced at the real Conna beside him.
"What’s up? We’re so close—couldn’t you just talk to me?" Kael teased.
"Mind your own business, I just wanted to check if it works, alright?" Conna looked away, her lips twitching up into a smile.
But then she quickly shifted topics, "Hurry up, next class is starting soon—it’s Defence Against the Dark Arts, and you’re in for it if you’re late."
