Chapter 60- The Infestation (Part 4)
’Come on... Come on...’ Rein clenched his teeth as he looked at his sword moving up and down as it tried to cut the last layer. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as he tried to keep his calm. Any wrong move wasn’t allowed, and he knew that.
Luckily, the monster was too occupied with its food to notice him cutting through the webs. His sword slowly sliced it, inch by inch, in a very arduous and nerve-wracking process.
Sucking a small breath, Rein looked at the last part of the webs before he looked at the monster. That last move was going to alert the monster, so he had to be very quick with it, or he was going to be in deep trouble.
’Here goes nothing.’ Calming his mind as much as he could, he finally moved his hand, severing the last part.
*Swish*
Rein immediately started falling to the ground. He twisted his body around, adjusting his balance with extreme precision as he landed on the ground. Immediately, he felt like he was standing on some sort of liquid that smelled horrible. But, he didn’t let himself look at it to discover what it was... There are things better left unknown.
’Ugh! Fuck!!’ He grabbed his side. The injury was looking very ugly, and he could tell that it was going to affect his movement speed greatly.
But he swallowed all that pain and focused on the past ahead. He then started running toward the darkness. The spider behind him heard the noise as it turned around and looked directly at him.
That single look sent a chill down Rein’s spine as he instinctively forced himself to run faster. He looked over his shoulder and for a second, the monster seemed motionless before...
It instantly sprang into motion, cutting down the distance between them in what felt like a split second. It ran through the webs with the agility that should never make any sense for something that size.
That sight alone made Rein’s heart drop to his stomach as he looked ahead and used all the remainder of his Life Essence to dash far away. ’Shit, shit, shit, shit!!! How is it this fast?!’
He didn’t even want to look behind him to see how close it got. But, at the same time, he knew that if he didn’t look, it would kill him. Entering the dark chamber in the den, he instantly turned around and saw the monster stop and open its mouth.
’It’s going to do something!’ His eyes flashed with a strong glint. He could read the monster’s body language well enough to guess what it was going to do.
Inside its mouth, the spider started forming a cluster of webs in its mouth. The cluster wrapped around itself, forming a sphere.
Rein’s senses immediately went off, seeing that as he finally recalled what had happened earlier. That thing that attacked him. It wasn’t a monster... It was that sphere of webs.
’You have to be kidding me!!’ Rein looked around him before he quickly located a rock protrusion to the side. So, he quickly rushed toward it and slid down to try to hide behind it.
*Swish*
At the same time, the bullets of webs shot out of the monster’s mouth toward Rein at speeds that broke the sound barrier. Rein didn’t even hear it when it happened... All he saw was the rock protrusion being blown into pieces in an instant as debris fell on his head.
He quickly tried to protect himself with his hands. Then, he rolled to the side and tried to continue running. But the monster had already formed another one.
’I won’t be able to react in time and dodge it.’ His eyes roamed around as he located another spot where he could hide.
*BOOOOOOOM*
The second blast hit the target with terrifying precision. The monster’s aim was perfect. Had Rein not hidden twice, he would’ve been dead... There was no other possibility.
At the same time, the spider started moving ahead, approaching him. Rein held his side and continued running. His breathing was ragged, and his eyes were blurry from exhaustion and blood loss.
’I need to hide. I need somewhere to hide. I won’t outrun it... I won’t be able to kill it either.’ He bit on his tongue to jolt his senses again and stop himself from falling unconscious.
*BOOOOOOOM*
Another bullet flew toward him. Rein desperately hid behind another rock wall. However, this one was rather thin, and the blast wasn’t absorbed completely.
"Agh!" He groaned as he was blasted back several feet, rolling on the ground as he held the side of his face. A large, gruesome cut appeared on the side of his face. He clenched his teeth as he coughed and looked up. The monster approached him rapidly, its legs moving faster than his eyes could see.
In a moment of hopelessness, Rein summoned two arrows behind him and then waited for the spider to get even closer. When it was almost there, he shot the arrows straight toward its eyes. He knew that this wasn’t going to work, but his goal wasn’t to kill the monster, but rather something completely different.
The creature noticed the arrows and instantly stopped as it ducked its body down to dodge them. The arrows flew right above its head.
’Now!’ Rein turned around and ran away with the few seconds he could buy. ’Anything... I just need any-’
Before his thought could even be finished, Rein suddenly saw a small hole in the wall to his left. It was barely big enough to fit him, but it was the only hope he could find. His eyes lit up as he rushed toward it.
The spider was in tow, cutting the distance short. Rein quickened his steps as he threw himself forward. At the same time, the monster stabbed down with its long leg, ready to skewer Rein’s body.
*BANG*
"Ugh!" Rein groaned as he rolled through the hole, slamming into the cold wall roughly. The debris from the blast slammed into his back, but the monster wasn’t able to get him. It started poking and hitting the wall violently, making it shake with each swing.
"Cough cough... Ah... This... is not... good.." He muttered as he looked behind him. "I... somehow made it... But..."
He looked ahead. The tunnel was long and dark, and he didn’t know where it led. As far as he is concerned, it could truly lead him right to his death. But, did he have another choice? No.
So, swallowing his dry saliva, he started crawling through the hole. His knees and hands were being poked by the sharp rocks with each step. The walls around him shook as the monster continued in its rampage.
Rein didn’t even want to look behind him, knowing that it could be looking directly at him.
’Creepy bastard. The fact you even exist should be a crime.’ He cursed under his breath. ’I really hope this leads me to an exit.’
For the next few minutes, Rein continued crawling through the seemingly endless tunnel. When he entered it, he didn’t expect it to be this long. A feeling of unease started creeping into his mind.
Eventually, he saw a glimpse of the end... When he emerged from it, he found himself inside a very large chamber. One that was considerably bigger than the rest of the den. It was also not as awfully smelling as the rest of the den.
Instead, Rein caught a whiff of something he could’ve never imagined he would smell here.
’Flowers?’
