Chapter 4: Breaking the Logic Machine
"...5... 4..."
The crystal in Kaede’s hand pulsed cold and rhythmic, counting down to the moment Neil’s real voice reached Lilith and Celine simultaneously.
Neil didn’t flinch.
The panic, the trembling, the wide eyes — all of it dissolved in under a second. His posture locked into complete, absolute stillness.
"3..." Kaede’s thumb hovered over the activation rune, dead eyes fixed on his face, waiting for the heart rate spike that meant surrender.
Neil reached out instead. Slow. Deliberate. Entirely unbothered. He placed one finger on top of the glowing crystal and pressed it back into her palm.
"Send it," he said.
Kaede’s thumb froze. A microscopic twitch at the corner of her brow — the first crack in her expression since she’d appeared. "2... One second left. Your survival rate drops to zero."
"Then press it." He leaned forward slightly, glasses catching the dim library light. "But since you love data, let me add two missing variables to your equation first."
She didn’t activate it. Her analytical brain paused automatically. "Speak."
Neil pointed at the rune. "Variable one: Lilith already knows Celine is using me as a spy. Last night she left a crimson tracking array on my uniform hem. She heard the entire blackmail exchange."
Kaede’s eyes narrowed. "You didn’t remove it."
"Why would I? I used that transmission to run a performance. Right now, Lilith believes I’m a terrified, fiercely loyal servant willing to die rather than betray her. If you send that recording, she won’t see a mastermind — she’ll assume the Crimson Lotus used a coercion array to fabricate a confession against her favorite innocent toy."
A breath. Her fingers stayed still.
"Variable two." His voice didn’t rise once. "Celine values absolute control over her jurisdiction. If she receives a recording from your faction showing her secret pawn has been compromised, she won’t come after me. She’ll realize the Crimson Lotus has been actively surveilling Disciplinary Hall operations. You won’t expose a broken-Dantian janitor. You’ll ignite a premature three-faction war. Is that worth the cost of your faction’s current strategic blueprint?"
Silence.

Kaede looked at the crystal. The countdown hit zero. The light went dull grey.
She slipped it back into her sleeve without a word.
"Anomalous," she said flatly, though her gaze sharpened significantly. "You don’t just calculate. You understand faction politics at the level of inner circle elders."
"I understand survival." Neil picked up his mop and settled back into his featureless posture. "If you’re finished, Senior Sister, I have a floor to clean."
"The Crimson Lotus doesn’t remove a name once it’s written." She stepped back into the bookshelves, ponytail swaying once. "You proved your value today. If you won’t join, I’ll simply watch until you slip. And in Akuto Academy — everyone slips eventually."
"Then keep watching," Neil said without looking up. "Just don’t stand too close to the screen."
When he turned around, the alcove was empty. Just the faint smell of old parchment left behind.
He let out one slow, controlled breath.
The balance is getting fragile. His eyes went cold. Lilith’s obsession, Celine’s blackmail, Kaede’s surveillance. The only way to stop being a pawn is to get strong enough to flip the board entirely.
He looked at his palms.

Suppresses physical presence and heartbeat for 10 seconds. Cooldown: 1 hour.
Ten seconds of absolute stealth. A genuine smile crossed his face — small, quiet, real. Short. But in the right moment, ten seconds is an eternity.
The sun was setting over the Akuto peaks when Neil crossed the stone bridge back toward the outer court, painting the sky in violent crimson — exactly the shade of Lilith’s eyes.
The courtyard was wrong before he reached it. No chatter. No movement. Just a wide circle of outer disciples standing very still, whispering in hushed, terrified tones.
At the center of the circle, sitting casually on a floating obsidian chair that absolutely did not belong in the outer court, was Lilith Vespera.
Crimson silk training robes. Silver hair cascading like a frozen waterfall. Her unsheathed rapier resting across her knees, sword-Qi crackling faintly, cracking the stone tiles beneath her.
Two senior outer disciples knelt in front of her — the same ones who had tried to extort Neil’s silver a week ago — foreheads pressed into the dirt, trembling hard enough that their teeth chattered. Blood from repeated kowtows darkened the ground beneath them.
"Lady Lilith... please..." one sobbed. "We didn’t know the janitor belonged to the Vespera clan—"
Lilith wasn’t looking at them.
She was polishing her sword hilt with a white silk handkerchief, expression serene, almost angelic. The murderous pressure coming off her body, however, was suffocating the entire courtyard.
"You touched him," she said softly. Sweet. Terrifyingly gentle. "You laid your rough hands on my clean little toy. You made him cry in his room last night. He was so scared... he thought I would think he betrayed me."
She stopped polishing.
Her crimson eyes drifted to the bridge entrance — and locked instantly onto Neil.
The murderous aura vanished. A wide, radiant, sickeningly warm smile replaced it.
"Ah, Neil! You’re back from your shift." She stood, completely ignoring the bleeding disciples at her feet, gliding toward him with light, unhurried steps. "Look — I came to clean up the trash that made you sad. From now on, nobody will ever scare you again." A pause. "Only I get to do that."
Neil dropped his gaze immediately, shoulders slumping back into the helpless servant mask — even as his mind recalculated at full speed.
She acted on last night’s audio faster than I anticipated. She’s here to assert ownership publicly.
From the inner court gates, a second figure materialized. Celine, flanked by four Disciplinary Hall enforcers, violet eyes burning as she took in Lilith’s presence in the outer ring.
And above them both, perched quietly on the high pagoda roof, Kaede sat with her logbook open, pen hovering, recording everything.
Three predators. One location.
The mouse was standing in the exact center.
