Chapter 17: Clockwork Breakout

The silver pendant against Neil’s chest felt like a small frozen block of ice. It didn’t burn — but every few seconds, a microscopic rhythmic vibration pulsed through it, the physical manifestation of Celine’s tracking thread testing his peripheral pulse.

He had isolated it in a cocoon of suppressed Qi, but he couldn’t stop the signal. It was a live fuse. The moment he stepped outside the lower pavilion’s structural wards, the atmospheric pressure change would warp the tracking signal and alert Celine’s elite guards within exactly twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes. The entire length of his board.

Neil stood by the ventilation slit of his windowless chamber. Oversized commoner robes gone — replaced by a tight black janitorial tunic from the lower laundry baskets. Cracked glasses adjusted. Eyes wide and empty in the dark, fixed on the moonlit cliffs of the inner court.

[ System: Extraction protocol initialized. External isolation array bypassed via Tier-1 Phantom Veil. Time before Celine’s tracking matrix flags a variance: 19 minutes, 42 seconds. ]

Move.

He didn’t run. Running created friction, and friction near high-tier spiritual sensors was suicide. He slid through the ventilation slit like a shadow — his body using years of agricultural conditioning, feet wrapped in soft linen instead of heavy boots, making zero sound against white jade roof tiles.

The night air bit at his exposed throat. Inside his chest, his healing Dantian burned, forcing Qi into his lower limbs to sustain the Phantom Veil.

He dropped from the eastern wall into the bamboo grove lining the path to the Grand Archive. The white spire loomed in the distance — a dark, silent monolith under the stars.

Five minutes gone. Fourteen remaining.

Three rapid paces through rustling stalks.

Then he stopped.

Every muscle in his back went rigid. The ambient Qi around him ceased its natural cyclic flow — a localized vacuum. The unmistakable signature of a high-tier stealth technique.

"Who goes there?" A low, hesitant whisper from the darkness.

A figure stepped into pale moonlight. Not a white-armored Vane enforcer. Midnight-black leather wrappings. Vespera clan shadow guard. A curved obsidian dagger in her right hand — pointed slightly toward the ground, not his throat.

A Vespera shadow. Here. Lilith.

Her eyes behind the silk mask were wide, chaotic, trembling. Not an assassin.

Emotionally compromised.

"You..." she whispered, looking at Neil’s thin form. "Lady Lilith sent me. She hasn’t eaten in three days. She keeps saying she broke your spirit. She ordered me to just... look at you through the windows. To make sure the Vanes weren’t torturing you."

Neil’s mind dismantled her emotional state with clockmaker precision.

Tier-3 cultivator — she could erase him with one focused strike. But Lilith’s guilt had infected her own security detail. The guard didn’t see an escaping prisoner. She saw the fragile boy who had nearly driven their young maiden into spiritual collapse.

"She sent you to watch me?" Neil’s voice dropped into that familiar ragged whisper.

He stumbled back, hands rising to cover his chest. "Please... don’t hurt me. Lady Celine said if anyone from the Vespera clan touches me, my sister... my village... they will all burn."

The guard flinched as if struck. "No! Lady Lilith would execute me on the spot if a drop of your blood touched the ground! But why are you out here? If Celine Vane finds you—"

"I have to go to the Archive," Neil sobbed quietly, one fake tear running down his cheek, knees trembling. "The investigator — Lady Kaede — she sent a message. She has my sister’s bracelet. She said if I don’t come tonight, she will tell the Senate I lied. She will let the Vane clan destroy my home."

The guard’s eyes went wide. "The Research Division is using your family to blackmail you?"

"I don’t know anything about politics!" Neil’s voice cracked perfectly. He stepped closer, eyes tracking the shadows wildly. "Celine’s tracker — it goes off in less than nine minutes! When the Vane guards arrive, they’ll see you here. They’ll think the Vespera clan came to kidnap me again.

They’ll kill us both!"

The guard froze. Emotional confusion at critical bottleneck — her mistress dying of guilt, a neutral investigator threatening to restart the war, the Vane trap about to spring on them both.

"This is a mess..." Her grip on the dagger loosened. "If the Vane enforcers catch us, Lady Lilith gets blamed for another breach."

"Then help me." Neil’s voice shifted from terror into desperate pleading. His small calloused hand brushed lightly against the cold leather of her sleeve. "You can bypass the Archive’s lower boundary arrays. Get me inside Kaede’s private sector before the tracker alerts Celine. If I can just talk to her... if I can get the bracelet back..."

The guard looked at his hand on her sleeve. Then toward the Vane Estate, where high-tier arrays were already flickering with faint warning gold. The twenty minutes burning down.

"Fine," she hissed, loyalty to Lilith’s sanity overriding tactical judgment. Her Tier-3 Qi wrapped around Neil’s body like a cold, weightless cloak. "Keep your mouth shut and don’t breathe. If the Archive’s central core detects my signature, we both die."

The bamboo grove vanished.

[ System: Time before Celine’s tracking matrix detonates the alert: 3 minutes, 14 seconds. ]

The shadow guard bypassed three lower patrol lines with terrifying efficiency, using Vespera clan blind-spot routes. They dropped from the stone arches straight into the dark corridors of the Research Division’s private wing.

Old parchment. Copper wire. Sharp indigo ink.

"Go." The guard pushed Neil toward the frosted glass doors, face pale beneath her mask, breath ragged. "I’ll stay in the rafters to mask your exit path. Less than two minutes before the Vane enforcers track that pendant to this building."

"Thank you," Neil whispered, head bowed.

The moment she leapt into the rafters and disappeared, his posture shattered.

Spine straight. Trembling gone. He reached up and tore the silver pendant from his neck with a brutal yank that ripped skin slightly, exposing Celine’s tracking Qi to open air.

He didn’t hide it.

He walked to the center of the dark corridor — right outside Kaede’s private laboratory — and slammed the pendant flat against the stone wall, letting its gold runes flare with a violent, unrestrained warning pulse.

Bzzzzzzzt!

A piercing spiritual alarm echoed through the entire sector. White walls flaring blood-red.

[ System: Celine’s tracking matrix has triggered a localized breach alert. Vane Elite Guard locked onto coordinates. Estimated arrival: 45 seconds. ]

Neil stood in the flashing red corridor, face completely expressionless, cracked glasses reflecting crimson light.

He hadn’t come to negotiate. Hadn’t come to play wits behind closed doors. He had used Lilith’s guilt-ridden shadow guard to bypass the Archive’s external defenses — and now he had brought Celine’s entire military force straight to Kaede’s doorstep.

The frosted glass doors slid open.

Kaede stood in the doorway. Simple white scholar robes. Hair loose. Wooden logbook clutched to her chest. Her dead analytical eyes widened by a fraction of a millimeter — flashing red walls, severed tracker on the floor, Neil.

Neil didn’t smile. His eyes were two deep predatory voids.

"The Vane clan is entering the Archive, Investigator," he said, voice entirely devoid of fear, dropping into the cold level tone of the machine she had tried to map. "And they are going to find a Vespera elite shadow guard hiding in the rafters of your private laboratory."

Kaede’s breath caught. She looked up toward the rafters. Back at Neil. Fingers tightening on the logbook until wood creaked.

"You..." she whispered, mechanical perfection finally cracking. "You didn’t come for the bracelet."

"I came to change the stakes." He took one slow, calm step toward her as armored boots began echoing from the end of the grand corridor. "Let’s see your ledger calculate a three-way faction war inside your own office."
