Chapter 13: Truth That Isn’t a Lie

The Vane clan carriage didn’t rumble. It glided — gravity-absorption arrays built into the frame ensuring that no one inside felt the crude reality of the dirt roads below.

Neil sat with his forehead pressed against the frosted glass window, looking thoroughly carsick.

Glasses fogged from shallow breathing. Hands clutching oversized commoner robes. To the four elite enforcers sitting across from him — hands resting on runic spear pommels — he looked like a stray dog that had wandered into an imperial palace and was now waiting to be removed.

Inside his mind, the landscape was completely different.

[ System: Ambient spiritual density increasing 40%. Entering Akuto Academy’s core defensive array node. Dantian drawing 0.4% residual Qi per minute from the carriage’s internal heating vents. ]

[ System: Warning. Senate Spire equipped with Tier-5 ’All-Seeing Eye’ matrix. Any active cultivation or sudden high-density energy burst triggers an immediate localized strike. ]

Keep absorption at a crawl. His internal voice was cold, a sharp contrast to the visible trembling of his hands. We don’t need a breakthrough today. We just need to let the Vane clan dig their own grave.

The carriage stopped.

The oak door snapped open. Midday sun hit Neil’s eyes and he winced, shielding his face with his sleeve. Celine stood at the base of the marble stairs — white and gold uniform pristine, purple eyes burning with ambitious light.

"Get him out."

Neil stumbled as he was hauled down, boot catching on the step edge. An enforcer grabbed his collar and yanked him upright before he hit the cobblestones.

"L-Lady Celine..." He looked up at the towering white spire piercing the clouds.

"Where are we? You said I just had to tell them what happened..."

"And you will." She was already walking up the grand staircase, back to him. "Tell them exactly what the Vespera assassin said in that cell. Miss a single word, and the Disciplinary Hall won’t be around to protect your little village."

Neil nodded rapidly, the broken toy expression perfect.

She’s so focused on crushing the Vespera clan in the elections, he thought beneath the panic, that she hasn’t once questioned why an elite assassin would leave a commoner alive to talk about it.

The Grand Tribunal Hall was cold stone and political tension built into amphitheater form.

Forty Senate members curved around a central glowing platform — Vane faction on the left, smug and relaxed; Vespera faction on the right, dark-faced, surrounding a middle-aged woman in a long crimson cloak. Elder Vespera. Lilith’s aunt.

At the highest pinnacle sat the Academy President. White hair. Entirely black eyes — no pupils. Chin resting on interlaced fingers. The air around him didn’t ripple. It froze.

"Bring the witness forward."

Not loud. But it echoed directly inside Neil’s skull and produced a genuine physiological throb of pain.

He was pushed onto the central platform. The moment his boots touched the glowing blue runes, they flared.

Bzzzt.

A translucent dome of pale blue light rose around him.

"The Verdict Field," Elder Vespera said, voice dripping. "Tier-4 Truth Array. If he lies, the runes turn crimson and the spiritual feedback sears his throat. Let us see what the Vane clan has fabricated from a dirty janitor."

Celine bowed to the President. "Lord President, this boy was present when a high-tier assassin breached the subterranean cells using restricted Vespera tracking mist. I ask that he recount the assassin’s words under the runes."

The President inclined his head slightly.

"Speak, boy."

Neil looked around, wide eyes, sweat running. He looked down at the glowing lines beneath his feet, breathing turning sharp and ragged.

"I... I was in the cell..." His hands shook hard enough that he gripped his own sleeves.

"The shadow dropped from the roof.

Everything went white... the shadow fought Lady Celine... and then..."

"Cut to it, rat," Elder Vespera hissed. "What did the intruder say?"

Neil flinched back. "The shadow looked at me. It said... ’The Vespera clan doesn’t leave loose ends. I came to clean up the mess.’ It tried to cut me — then the explosion happened and I crawled into the corner."

Dead silence.

Every pair of eyes in the Senate dropped to the blue runes beneath Neil’s feet.

One second. Two. Three.

The runes stayed pure crystalline blue. Not a single crimson spark.

A collective gasp from the Vane benches.

Celine’s smile broke open — triumphant, sharp. "The runes do not lie! The Vespera clan sent an executioner into my jurisdiction to silence a witness!"

Elder Vespera’s fist came down on the stone table, shattering the corner into dust. "Impossible! We never ordered—"

"Silence." The President’s voice hit the room like a thunderclap.

He looked at Neil. Then at Celine. "The boy speaks the truth. He genuinely believes those were the words spoken to him. The array confirms his honesty."

Neil kept his head down, shoulders shaking as if crying.

Behind his messy bangs, his eyes were wide open, completely dead, and razor-sharp.

[ System: Flawless. The Truth Array measures the speaker’s subjective belief — not objective reality. Since Kaede actually used those words during her extraction attempt, and Neil simply repeated what he heard, the array registers it as 100% factual. ]

[ System: You have legally validated a completely fabricated war. ]

Celine has won her case, Neil thought, watching the Vane elders begin demanding political sanctions. Which means she now thinks I am her ultimate prize. Her impenetrable shield.

The chaos was reaching its peak when the heavy iron doors at the back of the Senate Spire swung open.

One figure. Standard Research Division uniform. Wooden logbook tucked under one arm. Eyes completely dead and analytical behind pristine lenses.

Kaede.

She didn’t look at Celine. Didn’t look at the shouting elders. Her eyes locked directly onto Neil inside the glowing dome.

"Lord President." Her quiet monotone somehow carried across the entire room, pulling the old man’s attention instantly.

"Before the Senate passes judgment on the Vespera clan, the Research Division requests permission to submit secondary evidence."

She tapped her logbook. A projection flared in the center of the room — a complex mathematical graph. Heartbeat data. Micro-expressions. Atmospheric Qi density readings from the last seventy-two hours.

"A data set," Kaede said quietly, eyes narrowing at Neil. "Proving that the ’lucky rat’ standing in the center of this room has a resting heart rate that doesn’t match a human being in fear."

A pause.

"It matches a machine."

Neil’s heart skipped one genuine beat.

She hadn’t given up. She had simply waited for the highest court in the academy — and brought her scalpel.
