Chapter 255: One And The Same

Lancet stepped forward, gazing into the distance, feeling the aura of something not only demonic but unchained and unhinged, almost maniacal.

Astensia’s bright blue eyes were darker now, tainted with anger and disgust. More than others, she could already see the kind of calamities that were coming their way.

Kestrel, Thor and Espel were astounded all the same. Coming to the realization that this supposed truce had been a lie all along was unexpected although not surprising, but for the Demon Lords to do this, then that meant they truly had a greatly important plan for this place.

Why else would they send the dreaded...

"Purgatory," Lancet uttered. "The prison for the Demons even the Demon Lords couldn’t tame. The creatures inside there are powerful enough to kill a Lvl 50 Awakener, but it is their endless berserk state that makes them so unbeatable. They’re full of rage and despair for everything, even themselves. They’ll slaughter whatever they see that’s living. History says they’re the truest carriers of Gloom."

Espel folded her arms. "If the DemonLords can’t control them, why would they risk the army defending this place?"

"It won’t be all of them," Spectra spoke up and everyone turned to look at her. Ever since she looked into the tower’s distance, she was yet to peel her gaze away. "It won’t even be half. Or a quarter. Or half of a quarter. But it would be enough to destroy an army of able Awakeners."

"So something like this has existed?" Thor asked, already prepping for a great clash.

"Yes," Lancet replied. "Purgatory is locked in fragments. They must have opened one fragment. Spectra’s right. A fragment is only one tenth of the entire seal, but it’ll be enough for an army. Almost any army in fact."

Espel gave him a glance, her eyes showing that she was questioning how he even knew any of this.

Lancet realized he had lost himself for a moment and thrown away his act. Someone like him wasn’t supposed to know anything about that. Still, he didn’t address anything and just looked away from her gaze. By the end of all of this, he would have thought of a good enough lie to explain his knowledge.

"They’re coming," Kestrel announced.

Lancet stepped closer and peered into the distance. He saw thick red smoke cresting the small rise. The smoke reached from end to end, moving closer to them while the earth started to tremble.

"Tremendous," Spectra muttered, amazed by the sight of it.

Astensia gave her a blank, curious glance before gazing back into the crimson danger coming their way. She placed her hand on the pommel of the Blessed Blade, golden light swirling around her grip.

"Let us prepare to fight," she said.

Lancet looked at her and then back at the field. He didn’t know when it started but he realized now that he was afraid.

Demons were one thing, but Purgatory Demons are something else entirely. There was nothing different about the way they died or how their dull crimson skin was slashed, but... with Purgatory Demons, you’d likely never get the chance to slash anything.

They were relentless. True savages.

And not to talk about the crimson smoke of Gloom they carried around them.

"I will advise against that, gold knight," Spectra said.

Everyone looked at her again. Apart from her, none of the other Heroines knew anything about Purgatory and with Spectra being the Mother of Demons and all, they all deferred to her by default on this matter.

"Why?" Astensia asked, her anger still obvious even in her gentle tone.

"I hunger for battle, Demoness," Thor chimed in. "Slaughtering monstrosities more evil than Demons themselves will certainly quench this hunger." She rested her hammer on her shoulder. "So you better have a good reason for this."

Spectra smirked, still without shifting her gaze. "Calm down, thunderbird. I am trying to save your life here."

Thor narrowed her eyes. Everyone listened attentively, even Lancet who already knew what she was going to say.

"Do you see the red smoke that they’re bringing with them?" she pointed with a finger. "That’s Gloom with a density you have never experienced in your years of Demon killing. I said I would prevent the Gloom from reaching the rest of you but not that many. Not that thick."

She continued after lowering her hand. "The Gloom seeps in fast and will slow you down. The Purgatory Demons are already five times faster than normal Demons. I promise you if you fight them you will be killed or be fatally injured and turn into a beast minutes later."

Silence fell. The Heroines looked at each other, even at Lancet who they had half-hoped would say that was untrue. Then they returned to Spectra.

"So you are suggesting we give up?" Astensia asked.

Suddenly, Spectra began to float into the air, her own crimson smoke spinning around her as she landed softly in centerfront of her fellow Summons and Master.

"No," she said. Then she looked back at them and smiled. "Ironic isn’t it. Today, the villainess is going to save the heroines."

Then she gave Lancet a sweet look that was surprisingly very honest. "Do keep me in mind, dear Master. I’m only doing this to get your attention."

Lancet’s eyes widened at the same time his heart skipped.

Thor stepped forward, eyes narrowed, pupils quivering. "What are you saying, Demoness? You’re not fighting those things alone. We’re coming with you."

Spectra laughed, charming and evil. "Don’t tell me you’re worried about me, thunderbird. Please don’t. I am not worried for you at all. I simply know you would die if you attempted to fight those things." Her eyes closed playfully. "And well, that’s no good for anyone, especially not our dear Master Lancet."

Thor froze, shocked and confused by the Villainess’s demeanor.

"Besides," Spectra continued, "you’ll only get in my way. I don’t want to worry about fighting demons and filtering away Gloom from your body. This is too dangerous for all of you. You’ve never fought a Purgatory Demon before."

"But Spectra," Lancet called, "neither have you."

The Mother of Demons smiled. "I have been to Hellfyre, Master Lancet." A darker red magic, a shade of magenta and oxblood started to surround her, transforming her to a Demoness form. "It’s one and the same."
