Chapter 348: Promotion

"So this is the one that’s been causing us all that trouble?"

"He’s the one." I said without a single ripple in my voice.

After staring at the corpse for a bit, they finally seemed to accept what I said and took the serial killer away.

Though what they were taking away wasn’t actually the real corpse.

The real corpse had long been swallowed by Tempest and digested.

This was a fake corpse that was created by Faust and dragged back by me, but this fake corpse was quite hard to see through.

After all, this was a corpse that was created by Faust, the Immortal One.

When it came to death, there were few people that knew more than him.

At least it was impossible for these humans that had never known anything about necromancy to see through the fake corpse that he created.

At the same time, it wasn’t as if they really cared.

As long as the serial killer disappeared, it wasn’t as if there was anything else that they had to do. So all that they cared about now was making a show of the corpse and then dropping this matter.

Seeing that they took it, I didn’t say anything and went back to my office.

It was just that it didn’t take long for Viscount Denoir to come and see me.

I normally wouldn’t be surprised to see him since he actually came quite often to harass me. He didn’t come to show his support, he actually came to harass me since he couldn’t do it anywhere else.

But this time, it was clear that he wasn’t here to harass me with the serious look on his face.

It seemed like he had something to talk about with me.

"What is it?" Since it was Viscount Denoir, I didn’t hesitate to ask this.

After the amount of time that we had spent together, it was hard for me to actually hesitate around him.

He didn’t say anything as he looked at me with the same strange look.

It really seemed like there was something that he wanted to say and it was on the tip of his tongue, but he was holding himself back as if he didn’t want to say it. But nonetheless, he suddenly said, "You’ve got a promotion."

I couldn’t help looking at him with a confused and strange look when I heard this.

With the way that he had been acting, this certainly wasn’t what I was expecting.

Though it wasn’t as if I couldn’t understand why he was acting this way.

I just had no idea what he was planning to do.

With another sigh, Viscount Denoir said, "Alright, you should start showing yourself off to the other nobles after your promotion. Go to a few banquets with Debora and make a name for the two of you in front of other nobles."

I couldn’t help revealing a bitter smile when I heard this since this wasn’t what I wanted to do.

But I did understand why he was acting this way.

It was because this wasn’t what he wanted to see.

Viscount Denoir was someone that doted on his daughter and he didn’t want me approaching her at all. But since he couldn’t do anything about this, he had no choice but to let it happen.

So now that I was to take his daughter to a ball, it was only natural that he wouldn’t be happy about this.

But it wasn’t as if this was what I wanted to do either.

I was supposed to be the one that supported all of the other avatars from the shadows, which was why I didn’t want to stand out at all. If I were to meet with the other nobles, there was no doubt that they would drag me into things.

That was why I really didn’t want to do this.

It wasn’t that I just didn’t want to go to any balls at all and be forced to socialize...

Seeing the look that was on my face, Viscount Denoir said, "Do you think that I like this any more than you do? But there’s no other choice since it’s something that you have to do. These are people that you will have to work with in the future, so it’s better to build a relationship now."

Then in a different tone of voice, he added, "Or get to know them so you can know their weakness."

This was more like something that he would say.

This was the side of Viscount Denoir that I was seeing more of these days.

"I don’t think that my promotion should be that high, right?" I tried to dodge it still, but it didn’t seem to have an effect as he took out something for me.

After looking at it, I realized that it was actually much higher than I thought.

I was being promoted to one of the team leaders.

There were several teams in the Land Surveying Department and most of them were responsible for different things. But the one thing that was clear was that anyone that could become a team leader in the Land Surveying Department would be someone that was considered important.

With the status that the Land Surveying Department had in the Abel Kingdom, it was a place that only those that were trusted would be able to enter.

Anyone that was able to rise up in the Land Surveying Department were those that received the trust of the king.

But it wasn’t that simple in this case.

When I looked at the promotion paperwork, I saw that it had the king’s personal signature.

Which meant that this was something that he had personally ordered...

I never thought that I would receive the attention of King Abel XIV, much less his trust.

But it was a fact that I had been interacting with him as the main body for some time now...

Without knowing it, the main body had gained quite the status already.
