Chapter 222: Bad Day Out
Syvarn stood by the control panel, adjusting the settings on the serum containers.
He didn’t look away from his screen as he activated the internal comm.
"Bring him in."
A few seconds later, the heavy door on the side of the lab slid open with a low thud.
Loud, heavy footsteps echoed through the room as a massive figure stepped in.
Brug Morrgarn—Iron Tuskrager—ducked slightly to fit through the doorway.
His metal-hide skin reflected the lab’s cold lights.
His tusks gleamed, and his red eyes immediately scanned the cages before landing on Drask and Syvarn.
He stopped in front of them, then knelt on one knee.
His huge form caused the floor to creak.
"What do you want me to do?" he asked, his voice rough but eager.
Syvarn finally turned away from his console.
"Take some of the mutants. Five should be enough for now."
He motioned toward the cages.
"Pick the ones that rage the most. Release them into one of the mid-tier districts."
"Don’t lead them. Just let them run."
Drask folded his arms and stepped forward.
"Cause chaos. Let the Hero Association panic."
"Let them see what happens when they underestimate beasts."
Brug looked toward the snarling creatures.
One slammed its claw against the cage wall, nearly denting it.
Brug chuckled.
"Heh... finally," he said. "Been too quiet lately."
He stood up, shoulders wide, arms loose at his sides.
"I’ll take them straight to the BC-2. Close to where those A-rank brats like to patrol."
Syvarn nodded.
"Good. Watch from a distance. Let them see the transformation up close."
"I want data on how fast they move, how long they last before they burn out."
Brug smirked. "You want chaos. I’ll give you chaos."
He stepped toward the cage and tapped it twice with his fist.
The mutant inside snarled in response.
Drask nodded once. "Do not engage the heroes unless necessary."
"You’re not there to fight. You’re there to deliver the message."
Brug cracked his neck. "Fine. But if one of them throws a punch... I’ll smash their ribs."
Syvarn waved his hand. The locks on five cages disengaged with a sharp hiss.
Brug grinned widely.
"Come on, freaks," he said. "Let’s play."
---
Brug sat inside the armored truck, arms crossed, tusks gleaming as the vehicle rolled toward BC-2.
The back of the truck shook slightly.
Five reinforced cages were bolted in tight, each one containing a snarling, unstable [Feral Beastkin].
Their claws scratched at steel. Their breathing was ragged and wild.
Brug grinned to himself. "You freaks better go wild when we get there."
The truck hit a bump. He barely moved.
A few minutes later, the comm buzzed.
"We’re here," the driver said.
Brug stood up, walked to the back, and grabbed a thick metal controller.
The screen showed cage lock status—red bars.
He tapped in a command. Green lights blinked one by one.
The truck’s back door creaked open slowly. Cold air rushed in.
Brug stepped out, towering under the early evening sky.
"Let’s make some noise."
He pressed the final button.
The cages rolled out, thudding against the cracked concrete of an old street.
Each one hissed open.
The mutants roared and burst free, claws ripping at the air.
But what greeted them wasn’t screaming civilians.
It was silence—and a formation of waiting heroes.
Brug froze.
In front of him stood over twenty A-Rank heroes in battle gear.
Some had shields, some held glowing weapons.
Others floated above the ground, powers charged and focused.
Brug’s grin vanished. "What the hell... this ain’t right."
One of the heroes raised their hand.
"Engage!" they shouted.
The street exploded with motion.
A fire-based hero leapt forward, unleashing [Blazing Lance] that pierced one mutant’s shoulder.
Another hero slammed their fists down, activating [Earthshock Quake].
He sent tremors through the ground and threw two mutants off balance.
Two air-based heroes zipped through the sky, activating [Windstep Surge] to strike from above while avoiding claws.
A shield user planted themselves in front and raised [Barrier Dome], protecting others from wild swings.
Brug clenched his jaw and backed into the shadows behind the truck.
He watched as five A-Rank heroes swarmed each mutant, coordinating without panic.
Stun abilities, traps, and ranged barrages—it was like they had trained for this.
Brug’s tusks flared with heat. "Damn it. How’d they know?"
He ducked behind a building corner, watching two mutants get taken down.
One had its legs frozen with [Cryo Chain Bind] before being blasted back by a [Thunderburst Cannon].
Brug growled low. "This wasn’t a random patrol. They were waiting."
He pressed a button on the side of his gauntlet, opening a comm line.
"Doctor. Something bad is happening," he muttered, glancing around to make sure no one was nearby.
Syvarn’s voice came through calm and steady. "What is it?"
"The heroes. They were already there," Brug said. "Fully armed. Coordinated."
"They didn’t panic. They didn’t scatter. They knew we were coming."
There was a pause.
"What?" Syvarn finally said.
"How? This wasn’t a planned raid. This was supposed to be sudden."
Brug watched another mutant fall.
It got hit by [Gale Arc Cutter] from above, then trapped by [Binding Earth Spire].
The beast howled once before being silenced by a final strike.
"They’re taking them out one by one. Fast."
Back in the lab, Syvarn turned away from the monitors.
His brows furrowed, and he opened another comm beside him.
Drask appeared a second later, stepping into the lab with his usual quiet speed.
"What’s going on?" Drask asked, eyes sharp.
Syvarn didn’t look away from his screen.
"The heroes were waiting for us in BC-2. It wasn’t random. They knew."
Drask’s eyes narrowed.
"That was a sudden attack. No pattern. No trail. We didn’t even deploy scouts."
Syvarn clenched his fist, then paused.
"Wait," he said. "Wait a minute..."
He tapped a few keys, pulling up data on their internal logs.
"It doesn’t make sense unless..."
Drask stepped closer. "What are you thinking?"
"I’ll explain soon. Follow me. I need to show you something."
Syvarn opened a side door deeper into the lab.
Before leaving, he reopened the comm to Brug.
"Brug, pull out. You’re more important than the mutants. Get out of there."
Brug nodded from his cover. "Got it."
He turned, teeth clenched, and slipped into the ruins at full speed.
He didn’t like running. But if Syvarn said it, there was a reason.
And someone, somewhere, was playing a deeper game.
