Chapter 49: Chapter 49: "Are You Out of Your Mind?
"Are you out of your mind?"
Feng Xian respected the Regent King, his master and closest friend who had saved his life, but that didn’t mean he could comprehend the current situation.
The Regent King was letting himself be impeached while the Little Emperor was running rampant in the Imperial Study Room, on the verge of walking all over him.
And all this was supposedly just to play a game of "fishing" with the Little Emperor?
"Who are you fishing for? Who in the imperial court is worth such a great sacrifice?"
"Are you sure the Little Emperor isn’t just saying that to lure out your supporters, only to turn this charade into a reality and completely sideline you?!"
Feng Xian was so frantic he was practically spitting fire, but Rong Yin merely paused his hand that was lifting his teacup before replying with certainty, "He won’t."
Feng Xian asked, "What makes you trust her so much?"
Rong Yin thought, ’Because she’s lazy!’
He didn’t say it out loud, probably because he also found the reason absurd.
But the truth was, based on everything the Little Emperor had done so far, he believed the chances of her actually trying to seize power were less than thirty percent.
’I don’t think the Little Emperor is trying to seize power, but if she really is, isn’t that exactly what I’ve been waiting for?’
The Little Emperor had to grow into a true Emperor. If she seized all the power, she would have no more excuses to be lazy.
Besides, he wasn’t a pushover. He was just playing along with the Little Emperor. If she really wanted to take everything from his hands, it wouldn’t be that easy.
He was only unwilling to seize power himself out of a sense of gratitude and duty, but that didn’t mean he was a herbivore.
In Shuyun Palace, all the Palace Attendants had been taken away, leaving only Consort Hui imprisoned in the main hall.
In a side hall, Xie Liuzheng slowly got out of bed, wanting a drink of water, only to be surprised to find someone sitting beside her.
"Your Majesty?"
Xiao Yang turned her head. Her gaze swept past Xie Liuzheng’s face and landed on her shoulder. "You’re awake."
She poured a cup of water. "Come, sit."
Xie Liuzheng walked over, sat down, and took a sip of water from the cup she was holding.
Xiao Yang asked her, "Do you know how you were poisoned?"
Xie Liuzheng’s expression froze for a moment, then she nodded slightly. "I do."
She had drunk the soup Consort Hui handed her. Because she trusted the plot too much—knowing Consort Hui was supposed to be someone who would help her—she had drunk it without letting the system scan it. By the time she realized she was poisoned, it was too late.
"I don’t understand. What benefit is there for her if something happens to me from being poisoned?"
Xiao Yang said, "Because you were poisoned by something I gave you. That naturally benefits her."
"At best, your poisoning serves to shield me from harm, leaving the Emperor in your debt. At worst, the Emperor is wary of the Regent King and doesn’t want him to marry into the Xie family, so this can be used to drive a wedge between them."
Xiao Yang had figured out her personality by now, so she didn’t waste any time. She reached out and, to Xie Liuzheng’s utter shock, plucked the little pufferfish from her shoulder.
"I came today to ask you two for a favor."
You two?!
Xie Liuzheng was stunned. "Your Majesty, you’ve always been able to see it? Your Majesty... are you a transmigrator too?"
Xie Liuzheng was so agitated that the cup fell from her hands.
Now she understood. "No wonder. So that’s what the problem was."
She looked at Xiao Yang with surprise and excitement, her heart pounding. ’Someone from back home!!’
Xiao Yang prodded the glitching system. "Do me a favor. Send me back to my own body, and in return, how about I help you two get everything back on track?"
It took Xie Liuzheng a long moment to recover. "Your Majesty, what do you mean by that?"
Xiao Yang said, "I transmigrated here when the original owner of this body died."
Xie Liuzheng asked, "System, can you send her back?"
The system struggled free from Xiao Yang’s grasp, the little pufferfish puffing up into a perfect sphere of anger. "I’m just a strategy system! I can only guide my host on missions! I can’t take other people through time and space!"
Xiao Yang’s gaze turned cold. "Then you can forget about completing your mission."
She was the Emperor; she had plenty of ways to ensure they could never complete their mission.
Xiao Yang spoke calmly, but Xie Liuzheng had no doubt she was serious.
The atmosphere grew a little stiff. Xie Liuzheng, holding her teacup, glanced from side to side.
The system stared at Xiao Yang for a moment, then zipped over huffily and pecked her on the forehead. It immediately began to glow all over. A moment later, it announced, "You belong to this world. You can’t go anywhere."
Xiao Yang immediately refuted it. "Impossible. I only just transmigrated here two months ago."
System: "You didn’t transmigrate. You were reincarnated after death."
Xiao Yang was even more incredulous. "Impossible. Who ever heard of reincarnating midway through a life?"
The system got so mad it zipped straight into Xie Liuzheng’s body. Seeing Xiao Yang’s expression darken, Xie Liuzheng quickly tried to placate her. "Your Majesty, please don’t be angry. It went to check with the main system."
The system was gone for quite a while, and the atmosphere grew awkward. Xie Liuzheng tried to make conversation. "Your Majesty, which city were you from originally?"
Xiao Yang: "Su City."
Xie Liuzheng’s face lit up. "I’m from Hai City, but I was working the grind in Su City."
"I had a boyfriend from Su City. We were building a life together, but the scumbag cheated on me with his female subordinate. I went to confront him, and I was so angry when I left that he shoved me into the road, and I was hit by a car and sent flying."
Xie Liuzheng sighed. "I had just managed to pass my internship at the Star Emperor Group, too. Everything was gone before I even officially started."
Xiao Yang didn’t say anything. Xie Liuzheng looked at her expectantly and asked, "What about you, Your Majesty? Did you graduate from high school?"
Xiao Yang was speechless. "I graduated a long time ago."
"Since you were joining Star Emperor, you should know the surname of the chairman."
Xie Liuzheng said, "I remember the chairman’s surname is Xiao, and the president of the Suzhou District is also named Xiao."
Xie Liuzheng was astonished. "Your Majesty... you’re from the Xiao Family?"
Xiao Yang nodded but didn’t want to say more. Just then, the system returned.
The translucent, light-blue pufferfish had a small red dot on its head. "Host, I found it."
The little pufferfish turned to face Xiao Yang. "Your name is Xiao Yang, from Su City. You were killed during a home invasion. After your violent death, you were reincarnated as Xiao Jin. According to your fate, you were supposed to die sixty-one days ago and enter the next cycle of reincarnation. But somehow you didn’t die, and instead, you awakened the memories of your past life. However, it seems your memories are fragmented."
’What the hell?’
Xiao Yang couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
The little pufferfish looked at Xie Liuzheng. "You two have a fateful connection, you know. The person who hit you with the car was the same killer who had just fled from her house."
’In other words, they were both killed by the same person?’
Xie Liuzheng asked, "But System... didn’t you say this was an angst-ridden story?"
System: "An angst-ridden story is just a record in the Book of Reincarnation about the lives of certain Children of Destiny. It’s not a book, but a living, breathing world."
"You died a violent, accidental death, and the original Xie Liuzheng was fated to become a powerful, malicious spirit out of immense suffering and resentment. That’s why we had you come to replace her. You just need to win over Rong Yin and change both his and Liu Zheng’s life paths. Once your fates are completely intertwined, you’ll be able to live out your life in this world as Xie Liuzheng."
Both Xiao Yang and Xie Liuzheng fell silent, processing this new information.
One couldn’t accept that she had died and been reincarnated.
The other had always thought she’d transmigrated into a book, only to now be told it was a real world.
