Chapter 128: Chapter 128 Anxiety and unease
Stephan watched the girl’s slender figure walk away, his eyes darkening.
She was clearly disturbed by something tonight.
She had been fine at first, but for some reason, she had become deeply preoccupied. Thinking of the complicated look in her eyes when she had just glanced back at him, the man’s gaze grew even heavier.
So, what exactly was she hiding from him?

Alana returned home and carefully placed the ninety-nine roses on the coffee table. The flowers were still in full bloom, dazzlingly beautiful.
As Alana looked at them, she couldn’t suppress the sweet joy welling up inside her. But beneath that sweetness and joy, she was also enveloped by a sense of melancholy. What should she do? After all this time spent together and entangled in this relationship, it seemed she had truly developed special feelings for him.
When she was with him, that fluttering, joyful sensation was very intense.
It made her realize clearly that she seemed to have truly fallen for him.
So much so that she wanted to be with him and start a romantic relationship. But if she were to start a relationship with him, how long would it last?
After all, his mother seems to have a better, more suitable match in mind for him. If it wouldn’t last long, it would be better...if they never get together at all. But she was reluctant to let go.
Alana suddenly felt her eyes grow warm and moist; she raised her hand to wipe them, leaving a wet smudge behind.
She furrowed her brow slightly, her voice taking on a faint nasal tone. “I’m actually crying. How annoying.”
As far as she could remember, it had been a long time since she had last cried.
Even when she got her heart broken recently, she didn’t cry.
She just felt deeply sad.
She remembered that the hardest she’d ever cried was when she was a child, back when her parents divorced and abandoned her.
She begged them not to abandon her, promising she would be a good girl.
She promised to be obedient, to never fight or cause trouble, and to take good care of them when she grew up.
But they still cruelly abandoned her.
It was her grandmother who took her in.
She remembered locking herself in a dark, cramped room back then, crying for a very, very long time, so hard that her eyes swelled shut, and she didn’t eat a single bite.
In the end, her grandmother said she hadn’t eaten for three days and three nights and had nearly starved to death in that room.
Alana took a deep breath, suppressing those long-buried memories.
She walked into the bathroom, turned on the faucet, cupped her hands to splash water on her face, and washed her face.
Then she looked up and saw the girl in the mirror, her eyes slightly red. The girl forced a smile. “Lana, don’t cry. Be strong.”
Her life had only just begun; she still had a long road ahead of her. Letting go of Stephan wasn’t the end of the world.

After Alana and Stephan left, Luca felt something was off the more he thought about it.
Could it be that he’d fallen into a trap set by that girl Eve?!
She claimed Alana was being harassed by a pervert, forced into a relationship, and needed him to save her!
To him, Alana didn’t exactly look like she needed saving.
Could that girl be playing him?
The more Luca thought about it, the angrier he got. He couldn’t help but grab his car keys and storm over to Eve’s place.
******
Eve was sitting at home when, out of the blue, she let out several loud sneezes. She had no idea how things were going with Luca.
Would he be able to win over her best friend?
After all, Luca was her childhood friend,
she knew him inside and out. He was a decent guy, and if he could successfully date her best friend, that wouldn’t be so bad.
It would certainly be better than that pervert who only knows how to harass her best friend, right?!
If Luca manages to win Alana over, with him protecting her, maybe that guy who’s been pestering her won’t dare to be so arrogant anymore.
Never mind that, she’d better call Alana first to see what was going on with her.
Just as she was about to pull out her phone, she heard a loud pounding on the door.
“Eve, open the door!”
That voice sounded so familiar!
Eve walked over to open the door and, unsurprisingly, saw Luca’s familiar face.
She was surprised. “Luca, what are you doing here?”
Luca was seething with anger. “And you have the nerve to ask me that?! Lana and that man clearly has a thing for each other. Why did you lie to me and say he was just a
suitor? Do you have any idea how embarrassing it was for me to confess my feelings to her right in front of her boyfriend, he even said he was going to marry her and she didn’t deny it!”
Eve blinked.
What just happened?
Why couldn’t she make sense of it?
How did Alana end up dating that guy who “bullied” her? Wasn’t she still planning to get to know him better?
“Wait, you said Alana and that man are dating, did she admit that herself?”
Luca glared at her. “She kept taking his side! That’s enough answer. I’m not dumb.”
“You little brat, you’ve really put me in a bind! How am I supposed to face her now?!And do you have any idea how humiliated I felt today? Not only have I watched them kiss before in my presence, tonight, her boyfriend also humiliated me like a fool! It’s all your fault!”
Eve was still completely baffled, feeling like the situation was taking a weird turn. “Um, Luca, I have no idea how they ended up dating. Lana never told me about this...”
“Don’t you dare play dumb with me! How many times have you schemed against me since we were kids? Just wait and see how I’m going to deal with you this time!”
Without another word, Luca grabbed Eve by the ear.
He yanked her fair, delicate ear so hard she screamed in pain.
“Oh my, Luca, it’s not my fault you got humiliated, it’s a case of one willing to
strike, the other willing to be struck...”
Luca laughed in exasperation, tightening his grip on her ear even more. “You brat, you actually dare to talk back to me!”
He didn’t hold back, reaching out to slap Eve’s back again and again.
Smack! Smack! Smack!
The sound was deafening.
Eve wailed incessantly, “Oh my, Luca, I’m sorry...I won’t do it again next time!”
“You say that every time, but you keep doing it anyway, treating me like a fool!”
Luca cursed under his breath, ready to keep going, when suddenly, a screeching brake sound rang out behind them.
Immediately afterward, a blinding beam of high beams shone down on them.
Caught in the center of the glare, Luca and Eve were nearly blinded by the light.
Luca was forced to stop his outburst against Eve. He shielded his eyes with his hand and turned his head to glance back.
A black Maybach appeared before him, imposing and arrogant.
Even through the blinding white glare, he could still feel an icy, piercing stare emanating from inside the car.
Eve’s pupils contracted. “Oh no! My boyfriend, who was away on a business trip, is back.”
Luca’s eyelid twitched violently.
What the hell kind of coincidence was this?!
As far as he knew, Eve’s boyfriend was a shrewd operator, not someone to
cross. It was best to keep his distance.
He turned around and gave Eve a hard poke on the forehead. “I’ll let you off today! I’ll settle the score with you another day!”
With that, he slunk away.
The headlights followed him like a shadow, as if his fate were being choked by a noose, nearly causing him to trip and fall flat on his face.
It wasn’t until Luca had completely driven away that the high beams finally went
out.
Through the open car window, Eve finally got a clear look at the man inside.
His profile was sharp and chiseled, almost too angular and sleek.
In the interplay of dim and yellow light, he exuded a chilling, ghostly aura.
Eve couldn’t help but shiver.
Thinking about how he had just seen her struggling with Luca, her heart began to race, filled with anxiety and unease.
***********
Alana didn’t go to sleep until well past midnight, all to arrange the flowers Stephan had given her.
She carefully trimmed each stem one by one before placing them in a vase.
