Chapter 176 - A Ploy

He looked down at Mr. Sherlock again. The man's chest barely rose with each shallow breath. There was no time to lose. He had to get him to the hospital before it was too late.

He was the only one who could prove that Hunter was innocent since he knew Hunter couldn't have done this while he was in police custody. Besides, he had been with Hunter earlier so it was impossible.

Thinking fast, Matthew pulled out his phone and dialed emergency services. "This is Matthew Lewis. There's a man here with severe blood loss from an apparent suicide attempt. He's still alive but barely. I'm taking him to the hospital now."

With adrenaline surging through him, Matthew lifted Mr. Sherlock into his arms. The lawyer was surprisingly light, his frail frame making Matthew feel a pang of guilt. He should have come earlier. Maybe he could have prevented this. Or maybe not since they could've tried killing him too since he didn't know how many they were.

As he carried Mr. Sherlock to the car, thoughts swirled in his mind. If this was an attempted murder, who would have done it?

Could it be Ivy? He had just had the conversation with her, she had even been the one to remind him about the lawyer so could she have done this? Was this her way of paying Hunter back for what he did to her?

He thought and then shook his head. She couldn't have done this. She didn't even know the lawyer's name or house and there was no way she could've pulled this off in less than two hours. Besides, if it were her, she probably would've killed the lawyer before mentioning him during their conversation.

This deed had to be done by someone who knew that Mr. Sherlock was the one handling late Mr. Stone's legal details and that could be the household staff and Mr. Stone's both children.

The household staff couldn't have done this because they had nothing to gain if Hunter was locked up for murder and Mr Stone buried.

Just as he ruled that out, his mind immediately flashed to Chloe and what Hunter had told him about her.

Why hasn't she spoken up or gone to try to harrass Hunter for killing their father? Was she quiet because she knew it wasn't true or because she was probably grieving too much? There was something about her that didn't sit right.

Matthew clenched his jaw as he started the car and sped toward the hospital. The streets blurred past him, but his focus was sharp. He had to protect Mr. Sherlock. This man held the key to the truth, and someone clearly didn't want that truth coming to light.

What was Mr. Sherlock's connection to the murder? Was it the will or something else? He had to find out and to do that, he had to save Mr. Sherlock by all means necessary.

"I'm not letting you die," Matthew muttered under his breath. "We're going to figure this out."

The hospital came into view, its bright lights a beacon of hope. Matthew pulled up to the emergency entrance, honking the horn to get attention. Within moments, a team of nurses and doctors rushed out with a gurney.

"He's losing a lot of blood," Matthew explained quickly. "He needs immediate attention."

The medical team moved with practiced urgency, loading Mr. Sherlock onto the gurney and wheeling him inside. Matthew followed close behind, his heart still pounding.

As he watched them disappear into the emergency room, he took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. The image of Mr. Sherlock's lifeless form on the floor replayed in his mind. The note. The blood. The open door.

Ii couldn't have been a suicide attempt. He thought and then narrowed his eyes. But how could the people have left him alive and had cut his wrist instead of suffocating him and hanging him to make it seem like the suicide?

Whoever did this wasn't just trying to kill a man and they were professionals since they knew suffocating him could have been detected by autopsy.

This was a ploy. They were trying to destroy any evidence that could prove Hunter's innocence. They wanted Hunter to be convicted.

Matthew's hands curled into fists. He wasn't going to let that happen. Whoever was behind this would be brought to justice. And he would protect Mr. Sherlock with his life if it came to that.

One thing was certain—this case was far from over. It was only just starting. He thought as he headed outside, thinking about what he could do to uncover all of this.

A short while later, Matthew sat in his car outside the hospital, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel as his mind raced.

He pulled out his phone and searched for Chloe Stone on social media. It didn't take long to find her Instagram profile—public, flashy, and filled with curated photos of luxury, high-end events, and carefully posed candids.

Scrolling through, he learned that she worked at one of her father's companies, Stone Enterprises.

Though he knew she was most likely not going to be at the office today, he made his decision. It was time to meet Chloe Stone. If he didn't see her at the office as he knew he wouldn't, he'd get her number from her secretary so he could call and meet with her.

Stone Enterprises was an impressive glass-and-steel building that stood tall in the heart of the city. Matthew parked his car and strode inside, his expression neutral but his mind sharp.

He approached the front desk where a polished-looking receptionist sat, typing away on her computer.

"Good afternoon," he said, flashing her a professional smile. "I'm Matthew Lewis, a lawyer. I'd like to speak with Miss Chloe Stone," he said, expecting her to tell him Chloe wasn't in.

The receptionist glanced up, her expression immediately guarded. "Do you have an appointment, sir?" she asked, taking Matthew aback.
