Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Who’s Bullying Who?

Jiang Manzhi went over before Xu Fengxia and Liu Ranran could stop her.

In a moment, she was standing beside Su Zhaozhao.

Su Zhaozhao had no idea she was about to be at the center of a storm.

She was still enjoying her meal, thinking the food was quite to her liking.

It was probably because this was the first time she’d eaten a proper meat-heavy dish since arriving in this world.

Just then, she heard Xiao Yuanming and Wang Fuguo, who had been joking and laughing, stop talking.

The room went quiet.

A sweet scent wafted through the air—the smell of a vanishing cream popular in this era.

"Excuse me, are you Camp Commander Xie’s fiancée?" a crisp, sweet voice asked.

Su Zhaozhao looked up to see a pretty face. The girl had a round face, thick eyebrows, and large eyes. A thick braid rested on the shoulder of her military uniform.

Her features were regular and she had the beauty of someone brimming with health and vitality.

’But who is this? It can’t be the heroine; she’s not supposed to show up yet.’

Even though she didn’t recognize the woman, she could tell her intentions weren’t friendly.

’Considering what Xiao Yuanming said about Xie Huaizheng having many admirers, could this be one of them?’

"Yes, I am," Su Zhaozhao admitted openly.

"Then why have I never heard that Camp Commander Xie has a fiancée?" Jiang Manzhi frowned. "He’s stationed at this camp and hardly ever takes leave, except for the New Year. If he really had a fiancée, why wouldn’t he go back to Beijing to be with her? You must be lying."

Jiang Manzhi’s hostility was palpable, and many people in the room turned to look.

They knew about Jiang Manzhi’s background. They also knew she was a talented singer and dancer, and generally a very nice person.

This was the first time they had seen Jiang Manzhi being so aggressive.

But when they remembered she was in love with Xie Huaizheng, her behavior suddenly seemed perfectly understandable.

Xie Huaizheng had been here for five years, and Jiang Manzhi had been in love with him for just as long.

Although Xie Huaizheng had always been lukewarm toward Jiang Manzhi, their family backgrounds and appearances were a good match, so everyone thought they would end up together.

Now, with Su Zhaozhao suddenly showing up and claiming to be Xie Huaizheng’s fiancée, hadn’t Jiang Manzhi wasted the last five years?

It was only natural for Jiang Manzhi to feel it was unfair.

Xiao Yuanming said to Jiang Manzhi, "Brother Zheng and Zhaozhao have met. Her coming here was also arranged by Brother Zheng. It’s not fake."

He was a little worried about Su Zhaozhao. The girl had such a sweet and gentle personality.

But since the Camp Commander didn’t seem to care for her, she could easily be bullied by his other admirers.

"Is that so..." Jiang Manzhi still found it hard to believe.

"What is it? Do you need something from me?" Su Zhaozhao asked her.

Jiang Manzhi stared at Su Zhaozhao, sizing her up. Her face was truly beautiful—a delicate, radiant beauty, as bewitching as a vixen.

’Do men like her type?’

’Clearly, my type is more popular!’

"I’ve just never heard Camp Commander Xie mention you, which means your relationship isn’t that great," Jiang Manzhi said with a smile.

Xie Huaizheng had just finished a meeting with his superiors and came to the cafeteria to eat when he heard Jiang Manzhi’s words.

His face was cold and grim, his eyes holding a fierce glint. Jiang Manzhi liked him, but he felt nothing for her. It was only out of respect for their elders that he hadn’t made things too awkward.

He never thought she’d resort to bullying tactics like this.

’Is it because she sees that young girl as soft and weak?’

’If so, she’s guessed wrong.’

He glanced at Su Zhaozhao’s fair and delicate face, her expression much calmer than Jiang Manzhi’s. He felt that Jiang Manzhi would end up losing this battle quite miserably.

The next moment, Su Zhaozhao spoke. Her voice was still gentle, but her tone was anything but meek.

"Why are you so concerned about me? What’s your relationship with Huai Zheng? Are you trying to be the third party in our relationship?"

Her words wiped the smile from Jiang Manzhi’s face, which flushed red with shame and anger. "Don’t you dare talk nonsense!"

"Well, I’ve never heard Huai Zheng mention you either, which means you’re not his friend. Yet you’re so concerned about him, which means you like him. Since I’m his fiancée and you like him, does that mean you want to be a homewrecker for the sake of love?" Su Zhaozhao seemed to calmly analyze the situation before drawing her conclusion.

No one around expected Su Zhaozhao to be so articulate, rendering Jiang Manzhi speechless.

Jiang Manzhi had been overbearing because she saw Su Zhaozhao’s soft and weak appearance and thought she was easy to bully. She thought that since Xie Huaizheng had never mentioned Su Zhaozhao, he definitely didn’t like her.

But now, after what Su Zhaozhao said, her face went from red to white, and tears welled up in her eyes.

Xie Huaizheng, who was watching this unfold, crossed his arms, a smirk playing on his lips.

’This little girl really is something else.’

"I am not! Don’t spout such nonsense and ruin my reputation!" Jiang Manzhi fumed.

At this moment, Su Zhaozhao had already noticed Xie Huaizheng. The two made eye contact, and Xie Huaizheng subconsciously took a step back.

But it was too late. Su Zhaozhao stood up and ran quickly towards him.

Jiang Manzhi also noticed Xie Huaizheng, and her body began to tremble uncontrollably.

After all the years she had spent maintaining her image in front of Xie Huaizheng, she had to be seen in such a pathetic state today!

Su Zhaozhao walked up to Xie Huaizheng and grabbed his arm.

The man’s arm was firm and powerful; she couldn’t get a grip with just one hand.

So she simply used both hands, wrapped them around his arm, and prepared to drag him to their table.

Xie Huaizheng’s large hand clasped the back of her neck. He bent down, his gaze level with hers.

Sharp and with a hint of danger, he said in a husky voice, "Little liar, don’t even think about dragging me into this."

Su Zhaozhao looked up at the man’s cold expression and said with a smile, "You don’t like her either, do you? I’m taking the opportunity to help you get rid of her."

Xie Huaizheng let out a short laugh. She had only been here for a short while, yet she already knew what he was thinking.

So he let her lead him in front of Jiang Manzhi. He gave Su Zhaozhao a meaningful look, rather interested to see how she would continue her act.

"Huai Zheng, you’re just in time! This comrade is from the cultural troupe, isn’t she? She doubts our relationship is strong, says you never mention me, and even says you don’t love me! But you love me most of all, don’t you?" Su Zhaozhao began to act, her eyes quickly turning red.

Her skin was so fair that her red-rimmed eyes made her look like a rabbit, glistening with unshed tears. She looked utterly pitiful.

Nearby, Xiao Yuanming and the others chimed in, "Brother Zheng, you’re just in time! Why don’t we settle this once and for all today."

"Yeah, yeah, Zhaozhao is your fiancée, you have to prove it," Wang Fuguo added.

They all sided with Su Zhaozhao, making Jiang Manzhi even more mortified. "I wasn’t expressing doubt, I was just asking a question."

Luckily, Xu Fengxia and Liu Ranran were there to support her, or she might have stumbled and fallen. But being stared at by so many people, their gazes filled with doubt as if they actually believed Su Zhaozhao and now saw her as the homewrecker, was too much.

’But how could she be a homewrecker? How dare this woman slander her like that?’
