Chapter 49: Chapter 49: It’s You Again, You Vixen

In truth, Su Zhaozhao was a little sad to leave, but she didn’t want to wait anymore.

Waiting might not lead to a good outcome anyway.

The original owner’s father and stepmother might still come looking for her.

If she were caught and dragged back, it would be a huge hassle.

Escaping once was hard enough; a second escape would be virtually impossible.

She didn’t want to risk it.

’Perhaps it’s like in the novel, where the male lead belongs to the female lead. No matter how hard I try, Xie Huaizheng will never like me.’

Su Zhaozhao didn’t have much luggage. Most of her things could be stuffed directly into her dimensional space.

Still, so many people in the military district had been good to her. She had to say goodbye to each of them.

She took out the gifts she had bought on her last trip to the city.

The situation had been urgent, so she’d stuffed everything into her space, and nothing got dirty.

She also took out the belt and shirt she’d bought for Xie Huaizheng, but for some reason, she suddenly felt she couldn’t bring herself to give them to him.

Su Zhaozhao laid everything out.

’Oh, well,’ she thought. ’I’ll just leave them here for now.’

But she had the gifts for Aunt Yun and Xiao Yuanming ready.

She was still quite optimistic about the future.

With so many supplies in her space, she could even head to a city in the south. There were more business opportunities there, and she could sell more of her goods.

While Su Zhaozhao was packing, Zhang Jingshu came to say goodbye.

"Zhaozhao, I’m heading back to Beijing tomorrow," Zhang Jingshu said.

The Northwest wasn’t much fun, but Zhang Jingshu was very happy to have met Su Zhaozhao.

Hearing this, Su Zhaozhao felt a little sad as well.

’It feels like I’m always saying goodbye.’

She had seen Wen Xiaoqi off, and now she had to see off Zhang Jingshu.

"Aunt Zhang, take care," Su Zhaozhao said, hugging Zhang Jingshu.

Zhang Jingshu, receiving the warm hug, couldn’t help but smile. "Okay. And Zhaozhao, if you ever get the chance, come visit me in Beijing."

"I will," Su Zhaozhao nodded.

She would definitely go to Beijing, just not right now.

Right now, the opportunities in Beijing couldn’t compare to those in the southern coastal cities.

’I think I should go to the far south and try my luck.’

"Zhaozhao, you’re still young. I think you should continue your studies, finish high school, and take the college entrance exams. You’re so smart, I’m sure you could get in."

Hearing Zhang Jingshu’s words, Su Zhaozhao immediately smiled. "Yes, I was planning on it."

’It looks like I can’t go back to my own world for now.’

’In that case, I have to live a good life in this world with my new identity. Going to college is a must.’

’And I need to make money, too.’

’One step at a time.’

That evening, Su Zhaozhao went to Liu Guosheng’s home for dinner and gave the gifts she’d bought to Zhou Xiaoyun.

Zhou Xiaoyun was a little embarrassed. "Oh, Zhaozhao, you’re too much. Why are you always so formal, giving us gifts?"

"I bought them when I was in West State," Su Zhaozhao said with a smile.

"You really shouldn’t have spent so much money." Su Zhaozhao had given them some dried goods, like shiitake mushrooms, wood ear fungus, and kelp.

She knew Zhou Xiaoyun loved to cook, so these gifts certainly wouldn’t go to waste.

Xie Huaizheng watched Su Zhaozhao. ’Where did she get so much money?’ he wondered.

After dinner, Su Zhaozhao said to Zhou Xiaoyun, "Aunt Yun, Uncle Liu, thank you for taking care of me all this time."

"Oh, don’t be so formal," Zhou Xiaoyun said, waving her hand. "It was no trouble at all, just setting one extra place at the table."

Besides, Su Zhaozhao was always bringing them things and had bought groceries for them several times.

"You’ve all been so good to me. Even though I was here by myself, you made me feel the warmth of a family," Su Zhaozhao said with a smile.

’This is the most warmth I’ve felt since coming to this world.’

Hearing Su Zhaozhao’s words, Zhou Xiaoyun couldn’t help but frown.

’For some reason, it feels like Zhaozhao is saying goodbye to us.’

Xie Huaizheng’s brow furrowed as well. Something was off about Su Zhaozhao.

After dinner, they went downstairs and walked outside. Su Zhaozhao handed a gift bag to Xie Huaizheng. "This is for Xiao Yuanming. Could you give it to him for me?"

Xiao Yuanming wasn’t bringing her meals anymore, and his training schedule was heavy, so it was unlikely they would get a chance to meet.

Xie Huaizheng took the gift bag from her hand, his dark eyes holding an unreadable glint.

After a moment, he asked, "Where’s mine?"

’Su Zhaozhao went to West State and brought gifts for everyone else. Surely she got something for me, right?’

"There isn’t one for you," Su Zhaozhao said with a cheeky grin. "You won’t even marry me, so why should I give you a gift?"

Xie Huaizheng pinched her cheek. "Liar."

"I am not!"

"When you lie, your eyes dart around," Xie Huaizheng scoffed. "You’re so good at reading people. Did you think no one can read you?"

’Ah, he found me out.’

Su Zhaozhao blushed slightly but remained composed. "Fine. I bought one, but I don’t want to give it to you."

"Give it to me," Xie Huaizheng said, his brow furrowing.

For some reason, Su Zhaozhao was acting strangely today.

And it was unsettling him.

Su Zhaozhao was taken aback. She hadn’t expected Xie Huaizheng to be so direct, like a child demanding candy.

’Isn’t this the man who’s always so cold and indifferent?’

Just then, a sharp voice called out from nearby, "Camp Commander Xie?"

That voice...

Su Zhaozhao turned her head to see Zhang Jufang’s harsh face.

Beside Zhang Jufang was her younger sister, Zhang Julian.

’Well, well. Long time no see.’

"Camp Commander Xie, long time no see! You’ve gotten even more handsome," Zhang Jufang said, beaming as she walked over. She tugged her child forward. "Call him Uncle Xie."

The child was shy and hid behind Zhang Jufang, but his eyes landed on Su Zhaozhao.

Su Zhaozhao immediately smiled at him, and the little boy smiled back.

"What are you smiling at?" Zhang Jufang shot her a glare.

Su Zhaozhao was speechless.

’Wow, that was a quick change of face.’

"Camp Commander Xie, this is my younger sister. Why don’t you two get acquainted?" Zhang Jufang said, pushing the young woman beside her forward to introduce her to Xie Huaizheng.

Zhang Julian’s face turned red. She bit her lip, looking shyly at Xie Huaizheng.

Xie Huaizheng frowned. Su Zhaozhao, standing to the side, looked on with amusement, ready to enjoy the show.

’I’d like to see how he handles this.’

Last time, with Jiang Manzhi, she was the one who helped him.

But back then, she wanted to be with him.

Now that she was planning to run away, she had no intention of getting involved.

To her surprise, Xie Huaizheng’s gaze landed on her in the next moment. "What are you doing standing so far away? Are you afraid people won’t know we’re a couple?"

After he spoke, he reached out a long arm and pulled Su Zhaozhao in front of him.

His hand wrapped around her waist, and her head came to rest against his chest.

She could hear his strong, steady heartbeat—just like the man himself.

Su Zhaozhao saw Zhang Jufang and Zhang Julian’s eyes fly wide open, their mouths agape as if they could swallow an egg.

Remembering Zhang Jufang’s recent taunts, Su Zhaozhao decided to play along. She pretended to lose her footing and fell straight into Xie Huaizheng’s embrace.

Xie Huaizheng instinctively used both hands to steady her, one strong arm wrapping securely around her waist to hold her close.

Zhang Jufang shrieked, "It’s you again, you home-wrecker! Why are you everywhere?"
