Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Are You Jealous?
Everyone in the office was staring at them.
Zhou Chengguo turned to look at them as well.
Su Zhaozhao studied Zhou Chengguo. She saw that as soon as he noticed Wen Xiaoqi, his brow furrowed and his lips twisted in a grimace of impatience.
But he quickly composed himself. "Xiaoqi, what are you doing here?"
"I’ve been coming here to find you for days, but you haven’t responded to me," Wen Xiaoqi said, walking toward him excitedly.
An awkward smile spread across Zhou Chengguo’s face. "Is that so? I had no idea."
"Let’s go get something to eat."
"Sorry, that might not be convenient. I already have plans with a friend."
’He rejected her just like that?’ Su Zhaozhao saw the disappointment on Wen Xiaoqi’s face.
She spoke up, "Xiaoqi came all this way to see you and has been waiting for so long. Is getting a meal together too much to ask?"
Usually, Su Zhaozhao was polite and courteous to everyone. She would even flash a brilliant smile for the sake of social harmony, making people think she was an easygoing girl.
But now, she couldn’t stop her voice from turning a few degrees colder.
Xie Huaizheng turned to look at her. ’So, this girl has a passionate personality, daring to love and to hate?’
Love...
For some reason, he thought about how she always said she wanted to marry him. But could that really be considered love?
Only then did Zhou Chengguo notice that Wen Xiaoqi wasn’t alone; there were two other people with her.
A man and a woman. He didn’t recognize the woman, but he knew the man standing beside her.
"Camp Commander Xie..." Zhou Chengguo was a little surprised. "What brings you here?"
The military district was vast, and Zhou Chengguo didn’t know every camp commander. However, the man before him was simply too famous.
Ever since Zhou Chengguo started working here as a teacher, he had constantly heard stories about Xie Huaizheng.
They weren’t that different in age, but Xie Huaizheng had achieved merits and built a career with incredible speed, which had left an impression on him.
Of course, more importantly, his name was very similar to a friend of his, so he couldn’t help but pay more attention to him.
"We’re here to invite you to a meal, Mr. Zhou. Is that convenient for you?" Su Zhaozhao asked.
Zhou Chengguo looked at Su Zhaozhao and couldn’t help but frown. ’Why does she look at me like she hates me?’
But since things had come to this, Zhou Chengguo could only say, "It’s convenient. But I’ll have to let my friend know."
Zhou Chengguo stepped outside. After a little while, he returned. "So, where are we eating?"
Su Zhaozhao looked to Xie Huaizheng.
"The state-run restaurant," Xie Huaizheng said.
After all, eating in the cafeteria wasn’t a good idea. There were too many eyes and ears, and you never knew who you might run into.
They would have to go somewhere farther away.
The group left the office and walked toward the school gate.
"I’ll go get the car," Xie Huaizheng said.
Su Zhaozhao nodded. "Okay, we’ll wait for you here."
Xie Huaizheng glanced at Wen Xiaoqi and Zhou Chengguo. At that moment, Wen Xiaoqi’s gaze was fixed on Zhou Chengguo.
But Zhou Chengguo wasn’t looking at Wen Xiaoqi at all.
"Why don’t you come with me?" he asked.
Su Zhaozhao shook her head. "No, I’ll stay here."
’It seems Su Zhaozhao is smart enough to see that the relationship between Wen Xiaoqi and Zhou Chengguo is too strained. She doesn’t want to leave them alone together.’
’She seems to have a thorough grasp of human relationships.’
’How old is she, anyway? Not even twenty, yet she seems to understand everything. It’s incredible.’
’Or is it really as she said? That living under her stepmother’s thumb was so hard that she was forced to become so perceptive?’
Xie Huaizheng left. Su Zhaozhao moved closer to Wen Xiaoqi, then glanced at Zhou Chengguo. "Since you’ve finally met, you two should have a good talk during dinner. If there are any misunderstandings or conflicts, you can use this chance to resolve them."
She sounded like an understanding older sister.
But in reality, she wasn’t optimistic about Wen Xiaoqi and Zhou Chengguo. After all, a person’s micro-expressions are the one thing that never lies.
The look in Zhou Chengguo’s eyes, his expression—it was an attitude of wanting to keep Wen Xiaoqi at arm’s length. It had already revealed his true thoughts.
She was furious.
She despised this type of "phoenix man" most of all—the kind who relied on the woman’s family for support and promised to marry her in the future.
Then, the moment they made something of themselves, they immediately forgot their past.
And Zhou Chengguo hadn’t even made it big yet! He’d merely found a job as an elementary school teacher on a military base, and he was already acting this arrogant.
That was something Su Zhaozhao hadn’t expected.
Her goal was to persuade them to break up!
Just then, a man approached from a short distance away.
Su Zhaozhao looked over. The man was wearing a dark green military uniform. His features were handsome and striking, but his aura carried a mix of gentle refinement and cool detachment.
For a split second, Su Zhaozhao’s heart skipped a beat.
’Oh my God. For some reason, the moment he appeared, Su Zhaozhao felt he looked more like the male lead than the actual male lead did.’
’Look at that aura. If she remembered the plot correctly, this was exactly how the male lead was described.’
’Despite being a soldier for many years, rising from a common grunt to a regimental commander, the male lead’s temperament had never changed.’
’He had the refined elegance of an intellectual, only revealing his imposing side when he needed to exert pressure.’
’But on a normal day, the male lead was a gentle person.’
’And in front of the female lead, he was as tender as water.’
The man greeted Zhou Chengguo. "I’m heading out."
His voice was low and as pleasant as a cello.
Even with Su Zhaozhao’s picky standards, she couldn’t find a single flaw in this man.
’Not like that Xie Huaizheng, who’s full of flaws.’
Perhaps because her gaze was so intense, the man looked over at her, his eyes pausing on her face for a moment.
But he quickly looked away.
Just then, a horn honked in the distance. Xie Huaizheng had arrived.
Su Zhaozhao snapped back to her senses. ’Oh, come on. Xie Huaizheng is more handsome than this man. He’s grumpy, but he’s a good person.’
’But why was I so mesmerized when this guy showed up?’
’This is so weird. Is it just because he fits the description of the novel’s male lead?’
’But Xie Huaizheng is the *real* male lead!’
Su Zhaozhao quickly ran over, hopped into the passenger seat, and naturally buckled her seatbelt.
"Thanks for going all the way to get the car."
"Yeah, sure. Unlike you, who was busy staring at another man. Was he that good-looking?" Xie Huaizheng’s sarcastic voice cut in.
Out of the corner of his eye, he watched the man’s figure recede into the distance.
’Judging by his uniform, he’s just an ordinary soldier, not even an officer.’
He naturally didn’t know who the man was, but his appearance and build looked pretty good from a distance.
’Su Zhaozhao stared at him for so long, even longer than she’s ever stared at me. Has she taken a liking to him now?’
Su Zhaozhao paused, then suddenly leaned toward him. "What’s wrong? Are you jealous?"
