Chapter 305: Chapter 305: Houses Destroyed
Mu Yunniang didn’t get the chance to seek Yi Meng’s advice again because something happened in the village.
The torrential rain had been pouring for a whole day and night without showing any signs of stopping.
Most of the villagers, heeding Qi Quanjin’s advice, had carefully checked their houses, so nothing major happened. They were just stuck in their rooms all day, feeling a bit restless.
However, a few households that didn’t listen, even if they did some simple repairs when it first started raining, were still afraid of the heavy rain making it too slippery and causing injuries. So they never got around to checking and reinforcing the houses properly when the rain first started.
It only took a day and a night of downpour for some houses to start leaking.
Initially, the leaks were not severe, so they used basins to catch the water.
But from the second day, violent winds accompanied the heavy rain.
The thatched roofs that had not been reinforced were blown open, and the rain poured in as if from a basin, flooding these unroofed houses.
Thunderclaps, deafening and explosive, easily drowned out the cries and shouts of the people.
Some people still ran to nearby households for help, and only then did the villagers gradually realize that several households had their homes destroyed by the rainstorm.
Qi Quanjin heard the news while he was sitting with his family in the living room of the hall, having a meal.
Upon hearing the news, who could still concentrate on eating? They all quickly donned their raincoats and straw hats and rushed to the affected houses.
The people from these households had already been taken in and settled by the neighbors nearby, but those few houses collapsed amid the rumbling thunder.
The better ones still had most of their walls left standing; the worse ones turned into mere rubble.
Qi Quanjin and his brothers looked around the scene, their faces grim one by one.
"Pfft, old fourth, let’s, pfft, let’s head home first! It’s already like this, staying here won’t help, pfft."
Qi Ercai said while wiping the rain off his face.
Qi Quanjin nodded, also wiping the rain off his face: "You all go back first! I’ll go check on those families."
"Don’t go alone, pfft, we’ll go together."
Qi Ercai hadn’t put his straw hat on properly, and it got blown by the wind, leaving him more drenched than anyone else.
Others also nodded in agreement.
Qi Quanjin didn’t argue and started walking towards the nearest household.
Life had gotten somewhat better for everyone these past two years, but they weren’t families of great wealth.
The houses were built based on the current family size.
They could squeeze in an outsider and make do.
But accommodating an entire family at once was really challenging.
Moreover, those whose homes were destroyed by the rain kept wailing constantly, enough to make anyone’s head ache.
Seeing Qi Quanjin arrive, this household finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Village chief, what are we supposed to do? My house is just this small, I can’t accommodate so many people!"
The head of this household was a middle-aged man.
Under normal circumstances, he wouldn’t say such things, but these weren’t normal circumstances. It was true that their home couldn’t accommodate so many people.
Qi Quanjin nodded after hearing him, but before he could speak, the family who lost their home cried out, "Village chief, you can’t leave us helpless! Our home is gone, everything is gone, sobbing, there’s no way to live!"
