Chapter 75: The Second Eye

The second eye opened.

Reality broke. It didn’t happen metaphorically or poetically, but actually. The sky cracked like glass, a jagged fracture stretching across the heavens from horizon to horizon. Every person who saw it felt the same chilling realization: something fundamental had gone wrong. The world was not supposed to do that.

The creature remained mostly hidden beyond the darkness, revealing only two eyes, part of a claw, and part of an arm. Yet its mere presence was enough to destabilize reality. The implications were horrifying. If this was only a fragment, what would happen when the rest emerged?

Nobody spoke. Not the Hunters, not the academy staff, and not even Caelum. Everyone simply stared at the impossible sight.

The Founder Echo looked very tired—the kind of exhaustion that came from watching the same disaster repeat across centuries.

"Well," the ancient man said, folding his arms. "That’s worse."

The Old Bastard nodded. "Significantly worse."

"Scale?"

The Old Bastard considered for a moment. "Catastrophic. Potentially apocalyptic."

The Founder closed his eyes. "I miss the old disasters."

"No you don’t."

"You’re right," the Founder sighed. "I really don’t."

Orion stared upward. There were probably more critical things happening, yet the two ancient beings arguing about the apocalypse remained deeply distracting.

Then the creature moved again.

This time the reaction was immediate. Every formation in the academy screamed—not literally, but through the sudden frenzy of alarms, runes, and defensive arrays activating at maximum intensity. The creature’s claw tightened around the edge of the broken seal and pulled.

The darkness split wider. Several distant mountains collapsed instantly, and the kinetic shockwave reached the academy seconds later. Students were thrown from their feet, windows shattered, and stone buildings trembled.

The Hunters immediately formed battle positions. They weren’t running or retreating; they were preparing to fight. The silver-haired Huntress drew her weapon—a long black spear, identical to the one that had been thrown into the cultivation hall, except much larger and far more dangerous.

Caelum’s eyes narrowed. "Lyra."

The woman smiled. "Caelum."

The brief exchange carried years of history, none of it friendly.

"You should leave," Caelum said.

The Huntress laughed. "You think we’re here for that thing?" She pointed toward the creature. "We’ve been fighting that thing for centuries."

Silence fell over the plaza before Selene broke it. "What?" The word escaped her before she could stop herself.

Lyra looked toward the silver-haired girl, then toward the academy faculty, apparently deciding there was no longer a reason to keep secrets. "The Hunters weren’t created to hunt Sovereigns. We were created to hunt what Sovereigns become."

Absolute silence followed.

The Old Bastard muttered something under his breath, and the Founder immediately pointed at him. "That sounds like your fault."

"It is technically my fault."

"Everything is technically your fault."

"That’s unfair."

"It really isn’t."

As the argument continued, nobody in the academy knew how to react anymore.

Orion’s attention remained locked on Lyra because the Huntress wasn’t joking, bluffing, or exaggerating. She believed every word she said. Caelum believed it too, which made it worse.

"What does that mean?" Orion asked.

Lyra looked directly at him. "The Sovereign Path creates miracles. It also creates monsters."

Inside his chest, the Sovereign Core pulsed hard and violently, almost defensively. The Huntress noticed the reaction.

"See?" She pointed toward Orion. "It already knows."

Nobody liked that answer, least of all Orion.

Then the Founder stepped forward, his enormous projection dominating the sky. "Enough." The single word rolled across the region like thunder.

For one brief, impossible moment, the thing life beyond the seal actually stopped moving.

The Founder looked toward Orion, then Caelum, then Lyra, and finally turned toward the Old Bastard. The ancient man’s expression became completely serious.

"Tell him," the Founder said.

The Old Bastard groaned. "I hate this part."

"Tell him."

"I specifically designed things so I wouldn’t have to explain this," the Old Bastard muttered.

The Founder pointed a massive golden finger. "Tell him."

The Old Bastard let out a long sigh, the kind that suggested entire civilizations had disappointed him. Then he looked down at Orion. "The first Sovereign reached Stage Ten."

Nobody moved, and nobody breathed. There was no Stage Ten; there had never been a Stage Ten. The Path ended at Stage Nine—everyone knew that.

Apparently, everyone was wrong.

"The first Sovereign reached Stage Ten," the Old Bastard repeated.

"And then?" Orion asked.

The ancient man looked toward the creature beyond the seal, then toward the cracked sky, and then toward the broken reality surrounding them. Finally, his gaze returned to Orion.

"He became that."

Absolute silence reclaimed the world. Even the creature seemed to freeze as the meaning landed slowly, brutally, and mercilessly.

The first Sovereign. The founder of the Path. The pinnacle of cultivation. The man who reached Stage Ten was the very thing beyond the seal, the monster trying to emerge into their world. They were the exact same existence.

It felt impossible, yet judging by everyone’s reaction, it was true. Selene staggered backward, Vale’s face went entirely pale, and Caelum closed his eyes. Lyra simply looked tired, as though she’d lived with this heavy truth for years.

The Old Bastard rubbed his forehead. "In hindsight, unlimited growth may have been a mistake."

The Founder immediately pointed at him. "I said that."

"You did."

"I specifically said that."

"You did."

"And then you ignored me."

"I did."

The Founder closed his eyes. "I hate being right."

Orion suddenly understood exactly why they called him the Old Bastard.

Then the creature roared.

The sound shattered three of the academy’s outer defensive layers instantly. Students screamed and instructors rushed into motion as the reality of war arrived.

For the first time, the creature’s gaze settled directly on Orion. The two impossible eyes locked onto him, bypasssing the academy, the Founder, and the Hunters entirely.

The Sovereign Core exploded with internal activity. A new notification appeared in Orion’s vision, unlike anything he had ever seen before. The text burned with an unstable, ancient energy.

The creature’s shifting maw curved upward into a smile.

And Orion realized it recognized him.
