Chapter 68: The Black Spear

Nobody moved.

For three agonizing seconds, the shattered cultivation hall remained entirely frozen. The heavy black spear stood embedded in the center of the room, dark energy crawling across its polished surface like living shadows. The golden defensive formations Instructor Vale had painstakingly activated flickered violently, struggling against the sudden spike of foreign mana before finally stabilizing. Barely.

Orion stared at the weapon, his every survival instinct screaming. It wasn’t just the raw power of the weapon that set him on edge; it was the terrifying precision of the strike. Someone had hurled that spear from far outside the academy’s sovereign boundaries. They had bypassed multiple layers of defensive barriers, cut through centuries-old security formations, and evaded senior faculty members capable of vaporizing elite cultivators without breaking a sweat. And they had done it accurately enough to pierce the exact room Rowan occupied.

That wasn’t a warning shot. It was a targeted, geometric statement.

The first person to break the paralysis was Vale.

The instructor appeared beside the weapon in a silent blur of movement, her hand hovering a mere inch from the dark shaft. She didn’t touch it. Instead, the air around her distorted as she channeled her perception, activating several diagnostics and observation arrays simultaneously. Her expression darkened, a universal sign that the data returning to her was disastrous.

"What is it?" Selene demanded, her voice tight.

Vale’s eyes narrowed into slits. "A calling card."

Behind them, Rowan had gone entirely translucent. It wasn’t the standard paleness of a nervous student or a frightened child; it was the visceral, hollow drain of a person recognizing a nightmare. His golden-patterned eyes were glued to the vibrating spear, his chest heaving with uneven, ragged breaths.

Orion noticed it immediately: the boy was shaking from the marrow of his bones.

"You recognize this weapon," Orion stated. It wasn’t a question.

Rowan closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white as he fought for control. For a moment, the silence was so absolute it felt as though no one would ever speak again.

"Yes," the boy finally whispered.

Every faculty member and student in the room locked their focus entirely onto him. Rowan swallowed hard, the words dragging out of him like shards of glass. "My grandfather... he showed me a fragment of one before he sent me away. They use them. They always send a black spear first." He paused, his voice trembling. "The spear means they already know your exact coordinates. There’s nowhere left to hide."

The implications of his words settled over the ruined room like a physical weight. Someone knew. Someone had systematically tracked Rowan, mapped the academy’s defenses, and possessed enough insider knowledge to pinpoint the exact location of the remaining Sovereign lineage. It was a catastrophic security breach.

Vale turned sharply toward the boy. "Who are they, Rowan? Give me a name."

The boy’s face twisted in phantom pain, the inherited terror flaring up with renewed strength. "They don’t have a formal name. My grandfather never used one. He just called them the Hunters."

Before Vale could press further, the black spear pulsed violently.

The room’s defensive barriers instantly roared to life, warning runes flashing blood-red across the stone masonry as several instructors instinctively drew their weapons. Orion felt his Sovereign Core stir in response. It wasn’t a pulse of fear, but one of deep, mutual recognition—which somehow bothered him far more.

Dark energy began to bleed from the spear’s tip, pooling in the air above the shaft and slowly coalescing into floating, jagged words. Nobody dared to breathe as the message completed its manifestation:

THE LAST SURVIVOR HAS BEEN FOUND.

"No," Rowan whispered, the word escaping his lips before he could stop it.

Vale looked at him sharply. "Rowan—"

"No, no, no!" The boy stumbled a step backward, utter disbelief crashing over his features.

The raw agony of his reaction told the room everything the text left unsaid. The message wasn’t a future threat aimed at Rowan; it was a cold declaration of a completed objective. The old man who had hidden him, protected him, and sacrificed everything to get him to the capital was gone.

For a split second, Orion expected the boy to collapse under the sheer weight of the grief. Instead, a broken, hollow laugh escaped Rowan’s throat. The sound was small, agonizing, and brief. When he stopped, his entire countenance shifted.

Orion, Selene, and Vale all saw it simultaneously. The devastating grief remained, but beneath the surface, it was instantly replaced by a raging torrent of pure, unadulterated fury—the dangerous, enduring kind of anger that outlives loss and demands a reckoning.

The spear gave a final, explosive hum, projecting a dense cloud of dark energy that condensed into the phantasmal image of a man.

The figure was tall, broad-shouldered, clad in heavy obsidian armor, and possessed a shock of silver hair. A deep, rugged scar crossed his left eye. Though it was merely a localized spiritual recording, the oppressive presence bleeding from the projection felt disturbingly real. The armored man looked directly at Rowan, then drifted his gaze over to Selene, before finally locking eyes with Orion.

His smile was calm, confident, and entirely devoid of doubt—the look of a grandmaster who knew the board was already solved.

"I was wondering when the stagnant Academy Branch would finally stick its head out," the projection spoke, his voice carrying a metallic grate. Rowan clenched his fists so hard his palms began to bleed, but the armored man ignored him completely. "The boy served his purpose as a blood-beacon. As for the supposed heirs..."

His gaze weighed heavily on Orion, causing the Sovereign Core to flare aggressively in a triad of warning, recognition, and absolute hostility. Orion had never felt his core react with such visceral rejection, not even against the highest-ranking evaluators.

"You are a disappointment," the man stated flatly, his eyes scanning Orion’s form. The surrounding instructors stiffened, their mana spiking, but the projection merely tilted its head. "A few stray aspects of the lineage survive within you, perhaps. But not enough to matter. Not yet."

The holographic image began to flicker and warp, the academy’s heavy localized suppression wards finally eroding the foreign transmission. Recognizing his time was short, the man’s smile widened into something predatory.

"The Frontier Branch broke," he murmured, his eyes darkening. "The Academy Branch cowered in their library. Tell me, Sovereign Heir..."

The entire room seemed to hold its collective breath as the phantom leveled his final strike.

"...will your generation run as well?"

The projection vanished into nothingness. A microsecond later, the black spear shattered into a cloud of harmless obsidian dust, and every defensive ward in the cultivation district exploded into a frenzy of sirens.

A deafening, low-frequency emergency bell began to echo across the sprawling campus. One. Two. Three times. It was the highest-level martial alarm the institution possessed. Outside the shattered walls, the orderly academy shifted into a militarized fortress in a matter of seconds. Students were barked into defensive holding patterns, instructors activated lethal combat arrays, and heavy runic aegises rose over the outer walls.

A sharp chime rang out from the communication crystal fastened to Vale’s waist. She brought it to her ear, listening intently as her face drained of all expression, settling into a terrifying, rigid stillness.

"What is it?" Selene asked, her hand resting on the hilt of her blade.

Vale looked down at the pile of black ash where the spear had been, then at Rowan, and finally met Orion’s eyes.

"The western perimeter formation has just been breached," Vale said, her voice dropping into a dangerous register.

Selene’s brow furrowed. "By an army?"

"No," Vale replied, her gray eyes hardening like flint. "By a single intruder carrying a registered Sovereign signature."

The room froze entirely. There were supposed to be only two active Sovereign Core users within the capital’s borders and a third one had just broken through the front gates.
