Chapter 1116: Chapter 97: Shattered Glacier
The crane slowly moved, lifting the barrel of Ascalon and barely managing to turn it to a suitable position, finally resting on the chamber, turning Ascalon into a fixed cannon. As for how many more times it could fire, no one knew.
The firing times of this giant cannon had already far exceeded design expectations, and no one was sure when it would reach its operational lifespan.
After the deafening cannon blast, half-melted metal carried scorching heat and consumed the Horned Whale. The entire sea surface rose with blazing steam, and the rust-covered ship’s body turned red in an instant, along with the internal flesh turning to ash.
The wind carried faint roars, as if the Horned Whale was wailing.
The cold sea wind made Hebdo shiver slightly, but this biting chill also kept his consciousness very clear. He raised his head and saw that a quarter of the sky had already brightened up, though the storm was too vast, dragging the black clouds along with it, seemingly wanting to plunge the world back into darkness.
With the Blood Shark blocking ahead, the pressure on the Morning Glow Advance was greatly reduced. The number of invading Demons wasn’t too large, but most of them crawled in along the hull breach, moving inside the ship, which made it difficult for the soldiers to effectively block them.
Fortunately, most critical areas were sealed off under Lorenzo’s command, and the soldiers simply abandoned the extermination of these Demons, allowing them to crawl inside the ship’s hull. For Lorenzo, these Demons were not a problem; the biggest trouble was the Sea Serpent, and the damage to the ship’s body wasn’t a critical factor. As long as critical areas were protected so the Morning Glow Advance could maintain minimum operational intensity, it was enough.
Under such a strategy, the soldiers’ pressure was greatly reduced, freeing up more resources for deployment elsewhere.
"Hold the deck!"
Hebdo shouted loudly, but his voice was instantly swallowed and covered in the clamor of the waves. He wasn’t sure how many people could hear him, but it was all Hebdo could do.
The Aluminothermic Rifles kept firing, knocking down the Demons one by one, ensuring the deck remained under control.
Not far from Hebdo, the tall Black Angel was bound by cables, standing steadily in the stirred-up torrential rain.
Minutes earlier, Lorenzo had boarded the Black Angel, the engines roared to life, and the Demons’ flesh awakened, along with the slight movements of Iron Feather. If close enough, the temperature from the armor could be felt.
This gave a bizarre illusion, making it unclear whether it was steel or a bloodthirsty creature.
Hebdo rubbed his eyes, shaking away the cold rainwater, and looked toward the distant Blood Shark, which was now directly facing the Horned Whale, holding the enemy in check for the Morning Glow Advance.
In the command room located high above, Notar’s face was stiff, his hands tightly gripping the helm, following the voices in his head, doing his utmost to steer the Morning Glow Advance to keep it stable amid the towering waves.
With the Demons’ assault, the command room had sadly turned into a battlefield; fortunately, the number of Demons wasn’t large and had mostly been cleaned up. Plus, with Hebdo controlling the deck, the place temporarily became securely.
Notar was already struggling; from his vantage point, he could see a more detailed and clear picture. He could see the bizarre entities stirring up waves and wailing, and he also saw the large ship approaching slowly.
The storm pushed forward like a dark iron curtain, pressing down on Notar’s chest. The closer it got, the heavier it felt, until it made him nearly unable to breathe.
Before setting out, Notar had been prepared; he embraced the resolve of dying and joined this voyage. But when death truly descended, when facing this unending despair, Notar realized his own absurdity.
How to test a person’s true value.
Let him face death and see the choices he makes.
Notar had long made his choice. He wanted to go home, to say goodbye to this damned sea. He truly wanted to retreat, to release the weighty helm and find a lonely corner to hide.
Light rose, illuminating Notar’s face, drawing his gaze.
It was a blazing, dazzling light.
Notar saw the Blood Shark ahead, beneath it, a fierce white light rose from the sea, illuminating the surrounding seawater, as if a burning sun was rising in the deep ocean.
"What is...this?"
He murmured the question, but no one answered him, and at that moment, a new wave of commotion began.
Everyone could distinctly feel, as the white light rose from the seabed, the sounds of loud twisted whispers echoed beside their ears, like hundreds of Ghosts whispering, growing louder, almost surpassing the frenzied waves, even evolving into piercing roaring noises.
In an instant, Notar’s ears were filled solely with this anxious ringing. He painfully covered his ears, and it was then he saw Selyu coming towards him, the girl also enduring the maddening murmurs. She opened her mouth as if shouting something to Notar.
Sharp pain made Notar aware of the danger’s arrival.
The glass on one side of the command room shattered suddenly, the fragments cutting into Notar’s cheek. Demons spewed out foul-smelling blood, rushing forward.
In this chaotic battlefield, there was no safe place. Despite Hebdo’s valiant efforts to control, Demons still sneaked in from the shadows, along with the rising white light, countless Demons had already climbed around the command room.
