Chapter 1114: Chapter 96: God Does Not Love Mankind

He had nothing to hold dear, nor any place he belonged, hence he was invincible.

Lorenzo watched Zeus engage in battle. He recognized Zeus, never expecting that this Viking could survive in the end. Zeus probably couldn’t guess that the one he both anticipated and hated the most was standing right in front of him.

"He is an interesting Viking, a poor soul deceiving himself with faith."

The Plague Doctor chatted about Zeus again.

"During the surgery, he had to stay conscious and chatted with me about all sorts of things."

The Blood Shark rocked with the waves. Demons had appeared in sight, but fortunately, the ship was manned by warriors modified by Secret Blood. Though they were far from matching someone like Lorenzo, they were much stronger compared to ordinary people.

Thus, the demon attack was temporarily contained. Before they could climb onto the deck, they were cut down by cold metal, the bodies falling into the surging waves, disappearing without a trace.

The bombardment continued. The consecutive attacks couldn’t destroy the Horned Whale but effectively slowed its advance. The situation seemed intense, but because of the ocean’s constraints, the pace of the battle wasn’t urgent.

The Blood Shark shielded the Morning Glow Advance, bearing most of the pressure. That was why Lorenzo lingered here for a long time. Once the Blood Shark fell, the Morning Glow Advance would take on all the pressure.

He needed to find a way to make the Blood Shark hold on longer. The longer it lasted, the safer the Morning Glow Advance would be.

"What did he say?"

Lorenzo asked casually, watching as Zeus alone controlled a significant area, any demon appearing in his sight was immediately killed, blood and rain washing over his body, hot steam rising from the heat.

"I asked him, it’s the new era already, why still be a pirate?" The Plague Doctor chatted idly.

"The King of the Ice Sea ended the civil war among the Viking nations... at least the apparent civil war, and trade with Ingwig was also proceeding steadily. Whether it be wealth or food, there was now stable access, so why stubbornly continue being a pirate?"

"Why endure this precarious life? Is it just for the faith in Odin?"

The Plague Doctor was always curious about the essence of faith. He had asked Lawrence, but faith in Lawrence’s heart had long crumbled. As for the deceased Miguel, to him, faith was merely a tool of power.

Everyone seemed to have faith, but no one could articulate what faith truly was.

"Did you know? He’s also a member of the Apocalypse Society."

Hearing this, Lorenzo was somewhat surprised, but he said nothing, listening as the Plague Doctor continued his tale.

"Zeus’s response was quite interesting."

The Plague Doctor also watched the fighting figure.

The more the slaughter, the more the mind became drowsy and lost. Blood and wails accelerated Zeus’s decline.

"He said... he just couldn’t adapt, and the only thing that could embrace him was Odin."

In the dim cabin, Zeus lay on the blood-soaked operating table, cold metal cutting through his body, removing the human parts, and sewing on parts that were not human.

Zeus stubbornly kept his eyes open, answering the Plague Doctor’s questions.

"No matter who they are, probably everyone yearns for a place of belonging?"

"Iron Armor, law, unity, foreigners... these words are too foreign to me.

This is the new era.

You all possess such things, focusing on profits and groups, foolish faith means nothing, only absolute profit is real.

I, as a person of the old era, am out of sync with you. My mind is only filled with plunder and Odin. These things have accompanied me through most of my life. How do I have the courage to say abandon, and just abandon them all?"

Zeus tilted his head to directly gaze at the Plague Doctor, but all he saw was the bird-beak mask, unable to see the true face of the Plague Doctor.

"You probably think I’m pathetic, feel pity for me, but what I want to say is, there’s no need, because in my view, you are also a bunch of poor souls, you don’t believe in gods, nor are you favored by gods.

You are a bunch of desperados, after I die, a warm Heroic Spirit Hall will be waiting for me, while you have nothing."

The Plague Doctor calmly related the conversation with Zeus.

"Interesting, isn’t it? I originally wanted to explain some great truths to this ignorant Viking, but instead, I ended up ridiculed by him."

Lorenzo watched the increasingly frenzied figure and slowly spoke.

"Each of us upholds our own justice, our hands are also stained with blood. If we could easily be swayed by some grand truth, then wouldn’t we be too laughable?"

He continued.

"As for the Apocalypse Society... I met the Pioneer, who should be like me and Lawrence, a person possessing Authority·Gabriel, but clearly, he has lived much longer than both me and Lawrence."

Lorenzo said words that made the Plague Doctor shudder.

"Our encounter at Ice Bay, to some extent, was orchestrated by him. I guess what we are going through now is also a game set by the Pioneer. As for what he intends to do, I’m not sure either."

"Is that so? That sounds truly terrifying, possessing such fearsome power, having lived countless eras," the Plague Doctor pondered, "if he really had any purpose, within these long years, he had countless opportunities to implement it, but why wait until today, to step out from history’s shadows?"
