Chapter 1876: Good at Lying

The two wisely chose not to ask each other any more questions about what had just transpired.

Genevieve was right. They both had their own secrets. Almost all Magi and Paladins did. And it was impolite to pry into such things.

Still, Adam couldn’t help but find himself curious as a cat.

Genevieve had shown great talent in enchantment magic. She had been able to make him obey her words. Albeit for a fleeting moment, she had done it nevertheless.

Furthermore, she had also been able to cast magic with a one-hand seal. That spoke volumes about her prowess in the School of Enchantment.

She’s really something, Adam thought to himself in approval and admiration.

There’s that look again! Genevieve thought to herself as she held his gaze. She kept a polite smile despite the slight annoyance.

Meanwhile, Valerian glanced at the two of them. His topaz eyes shifted from puzzlement to surprise to finally understanding. He brought his paws to his lips and giggled.

"What’s the matter with you?" Adam turned to him with an arched brow.

"Oh, nothing, nothing." Valerian snickered deviously.

Adam resisted the urge to roll his eyes at the little guy’s antics. He had an idea about what was going through his silly head. So he grabbed Valerian by the scruff of his neck and hurled him toward the other side of the chamber.

"Myu!" Valerian landed on the ground with a wronged expression. But soon, he began giggling again.

"Go check that room for anything worthwhile." Adam waved his hand dismissively.

"Oh, of course, of course~"

Valerian glanced at the two of them with a knowing look in his eyes. Then he strutted toward the dark room, his tail swaying mischievously.

"This guy..." Adam suddenly wanted to ’discipline’ Valerian. It had been a while.

"So what’s happening out there?" Genevieve’s solemn voice drew his attention.

Adam explained to her what he had just gone through. It was fortunate, really, that he had been able to find this underground structure. Or else, who knew what would have happened to him and Valerian?

"Hundreds of thousands of undead creatures?" Genevieve exclaimed.

Adam shrugged. He looked around at the ancient hall, the Sphere of Resonance already working to find clues.

"And you managed to move through their ranks by deceiving them into thinking you’re one of their own?" she asked, unable to hide the amazement in her voice.

"Yeah," Adam replied absentmindedly.

Of course, he wasn’t going to tell her anything about the Faceless Mask. Let her assume what she wanted to.

"I’ve done something similar once before," he said casually. "So it wasn’t all that difficult, you know."

Although a casual remark, Genevieve could sense the truth in those words. Surprised, she couldn’t help but ask, "And where did you find so many undead monsters in one place?"

"Why, of course, in the Underworld," Adam said nonchalantly.

"...I see." Genevieve smiled politely.

He’s good at lying with a straight face, she thought.

Speaking of the Underworld, Adam turned around and glanced at the fissure in the ceiling. He subconsciously reached for the white patch of hair on his head.

Earlier, he had been a little late in completely transforming into a zombie and blending in with the undead legions.

Yet, for some reason, the undead monsters hadn’t attacked him.

Adam ran his fingers through his hair, brushing it back.

Is it because of the mark of the Underworld?

It was just a guess, but he could think of no other explanation.

He believed undead ignored him because he bore the Mark of the Underworld. At least, they wouldn’t attack him of their own accord. After all, the undead back on Tron never hesitated to attack him. But that was because they had been commanded to.

So many marks, Adam thought with a wry smile. It’s as if my body has become a book of signatures of some sort.

"Either way, it is fortunate you were able to come here."

Genevieve’s voice pulled him out of his deep thoughts.

Adam turned to her and smiled.

"Yes," he said softly, "I’m glad."

Genevieve smiled back.

A cackle of childish giggles broke the silence.

Genevieve turned to Valerian and chuckled fondly. Meanwhile, Adam simply stared at him with a deadpan expression.

"What now?" he grumbled.

The little guy gracefully licked his paw. He tilted his chin slightly and said with a smug smile, "You should come check this out, my dear brother. It seems like I’ve been doing all the heavy-lifting here, while you..."

Valerian harrumphed. "While you seem to be having a jolly time—myu!"

The little guy yelped and fled in terror as Adam stomped toward him.

"Genevieve, save me!"

He turned into a streak of gray light and leapt into the woman’s embrace.

Genevieve’s heart melted. She caught Valerian with open arms, hugged him close, and gently patted his furry little head. "There, there."

"Don’t let him fool you," Adam said with a scoff. "He’s a little rascal!"

Valerian turned to Genevieve, his pupils slowly dilating in his beady yellow eyes. "I swear I’m not."

Genevieve felt her heart melt again. She patted Valerian’s head and said gently, "Of course, I know."

Watching their interaction, Adam rolled his eyes.

He walked into the dark room and cast [Illuminate].

A sphere of light materialized in the air and hovered toward the ceiling, illuminating everything in the room.

Adam’s eyes narrowed.

Genevieve entered the room shortly after. Soon, her expression turned grim.

In the corner of the dilapidated room sat the remains of two people — an adult and a child. They were locked in a final embrace. Time had long claimed their flesh, leaving behind only weathered bones draped in tattered rags.

"Former inhabitants of this place," Valerian murmured.

He suddenly felt Genevieve’s arms around him tighten, so he couldn’t help but raise his head and look at her. "Myu?"

Her face remained expressionless, but he could tell she was shaken by what she saw.

"Just what happened here?" she muttered softly.

Her gaze swept across the room, the broken floor, the shattered bed, the splintered furniture, and everything else. Finally, her eyes settled on a notebook resting before a mirror, directly opposite the two skeletal remains.

"Perhaps that might offer some clues," she whispered as he walked toward the mirror.

But she had only taken a few steps when suddenly she felt someone grab her wrist. She turned with a slight frown and looked at Adam questioningly.

Adam gently pulled her back beside him, then gestured toward the mirror.

"Look."

Genevieve turned her attention toward the mirror. At first, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

But then she noticed it. And when she did, her heart skipped a beat in fear.

The mirror reflected the room perfectly, except for one thing...

The two skeletal remains were nowhere to be seen!

Then, an innocent, lonely child’s voice echoed from behind them.

"Will you play with me?"
