Chapter 141: Chapter 140: Struggle
Shi Lian’er collapsed on the ground in despair.
With a flushed face, Huo Ziming walked over to Princess An Ran’s side and whispered, "An Ran, how can this be settled with just your word?"
"Why can’t it be?" Princess An Ran stubbornly raised her head and mocked, "Huo Ziming, who you keep or don’t keep by your side is for me to decide. Given today’s circumstances, Prince Rui can leave, can you not admit fault? Since you know you have to admit fault, do it honestly, and stop making futile struggles. The more you struggle, the worse it looks."
Huo Ziming was at a loss for words, blocked by her retort.
Du Yunluo stood silently aside, observing the situation unfold.
It must be said, "The more you struggle, the worse it looks," Princess An Ran’s words were really wise; it was basically a reflection of her and Aunt Liao’s life.
The mother and daughter struggled for so many years, and in the end, it was like a play on stage, everything controlled by the Old Master, disgraceful and unsightly.
Sitting on the ground, Shi Lian’er covered her mouth in shock, pointed at Princess An Ran, and exclaimed, "You, it was you..."
"Didn’t inquire properly before coming?" Princess An Ran slowly bent down, her long, vermillion-painted nails gently traced across Shi Lian’er’s face, leaving a faint red mark, "Well, you never really paid attention to people like us, being of a poorer background, you don’t understand the affairs among the nobility in the capital. Actually, if you had the mind to ask, or listened carefully to my argument with Huo Ruyi in the Flower Hall, you would have known, I was meant to be her sister-in-law.
So, I told you just now, from now on, as long as I’m happy, I can hit you, and I can have others hit you too.
For the disgrace you caused me today, I can..."
Princess An Ran paused, straightening up, pointing her long nails at Huo Ziming, saying to Shi Lian’er, "I can even get him to hit you."
There was no color left in Shi Lian’er’s face.
"What? Afraid? It’s too late. Even if you cry and beg not to enter the Elder Mansion, you have nowhere else to go." Princess An Ran propped her chin, feigning sudden realization, "There’s one more way, you can run away, escape to the ends of the earth, but as for your poor scholar father and your scholar brother, I wouldn’t know."
Shi Lian’er clapped her hands over her ears and screamed, "Aren’t you just relying on your better background? How can you act so unreasonable? Is being born well so great? Each one of you is more arrogant!"
Huo Ruyi burst into laughter.
In terms of being born well, Princess An Ran could cough up blood, becoming more furious at Shi Lian’er’s words, "Yes, it is great! If we weren’t born better than you, would you have shamelessly stripped your clothes off?"
Jiang Yunuan, afraid they would quarrel endlessly, stepped forward a few paces and pulled Princess An Ran back, "If you’re going to handle it like this, stop arguing with her."
Mu Lianhui also intervened, "Yes, Princess, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to deal with her later."
There are indeed many opportunities to deal with Shi Lian’er, but as for dealing with Mu Lianhui, Princess An Ran bit her lip, having no chance at the moment, hoping someone would come along to diminish her momentum.
With this thought, Princess An Ran couldn’t help but glance at Du Yunluo.
Though she couldn’t participate in the upcoming drama of the contest between sisters-in-law, she believed it would be very exciting.
Du Yunluo ignored Princess An Ran’s provocative gaze, focusing solely on Shi Lian’er.
This Shi Lian’er called her arrogant...
So, this was how she viewed her back at Lishan Academy.
Du Yunluo smirked, in Princess An Ran’s hands, Shi Lian’er would certainly understand what arrogance truly was.
With what happened, no one was in the mood to admire the plum blossoms anymore.
Mu Lianhui arranged for people to escort each family out of the garden.
Du Yunnuo didn’t enter the house but stood beneath the veranda, catching most of the conversation. Seeing Du Yunluo coming out, she hurried to greet her.
Du Yunluo shook her head at her, indicating she was fine, and turned to look for Du Yundi and Du Yunlan, but the two brothers were no longer in their original positions.
"Where are Third Brother and Fourth Brother?" Du Yunluo asked.
Du Yunnuo explained, "Miss Lu and the others are around, the brothers have gone out first."
Du Yunluo nodded.
Though many words loomed in her heart to ask Du Yundi, Wangmei Garden wasn’t the right place for it, so Du Yunluo curbed her thoughts and left the courtyard with Du Yunnuo in single file.
The maids guided them to the carriage, where the Du family’s maids and matrons were already waiting.
Qian He helped Du Yunnuo onto the carriage, and then gave Du Yunluo a hand.
The carriage moved slowly forward, and Qian He poured a cup of hot tea for each of the young ladies.
Du Yunluo took small sips, feeling significantly warmer, and her whole body relaxed.
Outside the gate of Wangmei Garden, Du Yundi’s voice came from beyond the carriage.
Du Yunluo lifted the curtain.
Du Yundi smiled at her, his intention to comfort clear, speaking softly, "We’re heading back now, don’t worry, we’ll be home soon."
He had come specifically to reassure her.
Du Yunluo smiled with her eyes, nodding at Du Yundi.
Just about to put down the curtain, she caught a familiar silhouette out of the corner of her eye, tall and standing straight, unmistakably Mu Lianxiao.
She couldn’t help but look a little longer, seeing Mu Lianxiao in quiet conversation with someone else, only glimpsing half the other person’s profile. After some thought, she recognized him as Prince Cheng’s heir, Li Yu.
Perhaps noticing the gaze from this direction, Mu Lianxiao turned to look over.
The two of them locked eyes, momentarily caught off guard. Du Yunluo’s hand jerked, and the curtain slipped from her grasp, shaking slightly and cutting off all sight.
Even with her thick skin, Du Yunluo felt too embarrassed to take another peek.
Du Yunnuo observed it all, chuckling softly.
Knowing what she was laughing at, Du Yunluo cleared her throat and changed the subject, "Good thing we saw Mr. Lu. We’ll finally have something to report back to Third Sister."
"Hmm..." Du Yunnuo responded softly, an unexpected emptiness filling her heart.
Mu Lianxiao, Lu Huan, she had seen them clearly today. It turned out her sisters were to marry such men.
But what about her?
What about her future?
What kind of future would the Liao family have for her?
Leaning against the carriage wall, Du Yunnuo let out a slow sigh.
She was only three or four months older than Du Yunluo, not far off from coming of age herself, yet she knew nothing.
The carriage drove into the city, heading straight back to the mansion, sisters’ plans to sneakily buy some New Year sweets forgotten.
Du Yunluo loved eating such things; the mansion always prepared some each year, but still, Du Yunluo’s greed would often lead to secretly bought sweets with slightly different tastes, but at this moment, no one remembered.
Mrs. Zhen and Mrs. Liao awaited their return.
Seeing the snow jackets of Du Yunluo and Du Yunnuo switched, the hems stained with mud, their surprise was evident.
Du Yunluo grasped Mrs. Zhen’s hand, saying, "Let’s go straight to Lianfu Garden, it’s warm inside, no need for snow jackets."
Seeing the sisters’ serious expressions, yet not like they had quarreled with each other, Mrs. Zhen sought explanation from Du Yundi with a glance. Du Yundi touched his nose and also mentioned Lianfu Garden.
After exchanging brief words with Mrs. Liao, Mrs. Zhen nodded and sent someone to fetch clean capes.
As they arrived outside Lianfu Garden, Mrs. Miao happened to arrive, stepping in ahead.
