Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Change in Mindset
A family — why should money decide who is better than who?
Is money really that important?
If he had a choice, Evan would prefer a warm family that cared more about love and relationships than cash.
But in this world, everyone only thought about houses, cars, and money. There was no real family love left!
If you had no money and no success, everyone would mock you, look down on you, and scold you.
But once you had money and success, they all came running to flatter you and find ways to take advantage.
Evan felt no warmth from this kind of "family."
On the other hand, his wife Sophia never looked down on him when he had no money. Even now that he was earning a lot, she didn’t act proud or excited. Instead, worry still filled her face.
Helen kept bragging about how great her son-in-law was. The more Susan watched, the worse she felt. For so many years, the Du family had always looked down on the Wen family. She never expected that this useless live-in son-in-law would help the Wen family gain face today.
After dinner, Sophia and Mia helped Helen clean the table. They brought out fruits, snacks, and tea, then sat together again.
Because of what happened earlier, both families felt awkward.
In the past, the three from the Du family would have started mocking Evan like always, acting superior and telling him to get a real job.
But today, they sat together and couldn’t find anything to talk about.
The atmosphere became very uncomfortable.
"Um? Where’s Mia today? I haven’t seen her at all," Susan suddenly asked, trying to break the awkward silence.
Only then did Evan remember that his little sister-in-law Mia was already on summer break. Why hadn’t she shown up all day, and why wasn’t she home yet?
"That naughty girl said she went to a classmate reunion after summer break started. No need to worry about her. Kids these days are really something. I just hope this girl can get into a top university like Harvard or Stanford..." Helen waved her hand and smiled.
"Oh... hehe, we won’t stay any longer. We still have things to do at home, so we’ll head back now," Susan and David looked at each other and stood up with fake smiles.
"Ah? Leaving so early? Stay a bit longer. It’s rare for you to visit. Let’s chat properly! And Vivian wanted to ask Evan about writing, right?" Helen was enjoying her moment of pride and didn’t want them to leave. She tried hard to keep them.
"No need, Aunt. Vivian and I still want to go out and have fun," Jake said. He had been silent and stone-faced the whole dinner. He had wanted to leave for a while and quickly refused.
"It’s fine. If you have things to do, go ahead. We’ll visit your place another day. Vivian can ask me about writing anytime," Evan said. He couldn’t wait for them to leave.
"Brother-in-law, can we add each other on WeChat? If I have any questions later, I can ask you there!" Vivian said innocently, holding her phone with hopeful eyes.
"Sure." Evan had been waiting for this. He took out his phone and happily added Vivian on WeChat.
Watching the family drive away looking defeated, Emma couldn’t hold it in and laughed, "Brother-in-law, you were so cool today! You finally stood up for our family! Let’s see if they dare show off again! I was so happy watching them get humiliated!"
" Evan, you did great! Yesterday you told me you’d buy me a Mercedes. I thought you were just comforting me. I didn’t know you had earned so much money quietly! Your dad wanted you to work at his factory yesterday. That small factory’s yearly profit isn’t even as much as your one month of writing! You silly boy, why didn’t you say anything yesterday? You’ve been wronged!" Helen looked at Evan with more and more satisfaction. She held his hand warmly and smiled.
"It’s not that much. I didn’t want to say anything yet. I wanted to surprise you all after buying the Mercedes. But Uncle David and Aunt Susan went too far. They can insult me, but when they dragged you and Sophia into it, I couldn’t hold back. I don’t need to give them face, but Dad is my father-in-law after all. How could I argue with him directly?"
Evan smiled sincerely at Helen.
"Good boy! You really have a good heart! Sophia is so lucky to have such a wonderful husband. Your father-in-law and I are blessed to have such a great son-in-law!" Helen’s eyes turned red with happy tears. She had never felt so content.
[Intimacy with Helen: +20 (80 Close)] [Intimacy with Emma: +2 (93 Close)]
Evan’s words not only greatly increased his mother-in-law’s intimacy, but also gained 2 points with his sister-in-law.
Everything felt better when things were going well.
Since getting the system, Evan noticed his whole mindset had changed.
Now with one million dollars in his account, having money made him more confident. Even the way he spoke had become smoother and smarter.
