Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Not Much, Just a Million

"Evan, how can you talk to us like that?! We were only trying to help you! You’re biting the hand that feeds you. How ungrateful!" Susan glared at Evan angrily.

"Oh? You’re helping me? Alright, maybe I misunderstood. In that case, Aunt Susan, how much does the packing job pay per month? If it’s more than what I make from writing, I’d be happy to come work for you," Evan said calmly with a smile.

"Our factory’s average wage is about $600. As a new worker, we’ll start you at $270 during training. After you become permanent, I’ll give you $600," Susan said in a condescending, charity-like tone.

She didn’t mention how long the "training period" would last. Knowing how stingy Susan was, Evan guessed it would be at least six months.

"Ah? That’s quite low... Then I’m afraid I can’t do it. Even though writing doesn’t make much, I still earn around $15,000 a month in royalties. I thought you were going to offer me $30,000 a month," Evan shook his head with fake regret, speaking seriously.

"Fifteen thousand?! Pfft! Brother-in-law, you used to be useless, but now you’ve got no shame at all! You dare brag like that? We all know what you’re capable of. Fifteen thousand a month? You must be dreaming!"

Jake laughed in disbelief, staring at Evan. He couldn’t believe Evan would tell such an obvious lie.

"Evan, it’s okay if you’re not capable. I used to think you were honest, but lying like this is wrong. We’re family. You might fool outsiders, but we know exactly how much you’re worth. Your character is questionable now," Susan said in a superior, lecturing tone.

"We were even thinking of helping you learn some skills at our factory so you could have a future. But now it seems you really are hopeless," David snorted arrogantly and scolded Evan.

Evan watched the three of them showing off in front of him. He stayed calm until they finished, then took out his phone, opened his bank app, and said:

"I didn’t actually make much this year... just about a million."

He placed his phone on the table.

Jake looked at it suspiciously. When he saw the long string of numbers in Evan’s bank account, his eyes widened in shock.

"Ei... eighty... over eighty thousand dollars!!!"

"What?!" David and Susan leaned forward immediately after hearing Jake, staring at the phone in disbelief.

"It really is over eighty thousand!! Our factory only makes forty to fifty thousand in profit after working hard all year..."

"How is that possible? Writing online novels can really make that much money??"

Their attitudes flipped 180 degrees the moment they saw the money in Evan’s bank account.

"This isn’t a fake screenshot from someone else, right?" Jake grabbed the phone, closed the bank app, opened it again, and checked multiple times. Finally, he sat back on the sofa, speechless.

"Pfft~~~" Emma, who had been expecting this, couldn’t hold back her laughter when she saw her aunt’s family get completely humiliated.

It was rare for the Wen family to feel proud in front of the Du family. Emma secretly gave Evan a thumbs-up and winked at him with admiration.

Sophia stared at Evan in shock. She picked up his phone, checked the bank balance, and looked at him with wide eyes full of suspicion.

"Uncle, Auntie, I read web novels often too. A lot of people like reading online now. I wrote a little when I was in school, but my writing isn’t great — I only made a few hundred dollars. I never expected brother-in-law to earn so much! You must be a real big shot in the web novel world!" Vivian looked at Evan with clear admiration and said excitedly, "Brother-in-law, can you teach me? My dream has always been to become a writer!"

"Jake, what kind of books do you write? It makes so much money? Why didn’t you tell us earlier? We thought you weren’t earning anything and wanted to help you... Hehe... Why don’t you teach our Jake too? Let him write with you," Susan said, her eyes shining with greed. Her whole attitude toward Evan had changed as she spoke in a flattering, awkward tone.

"Writing needs talent. Not everyone can do it. Jake only finished vocational school. With his education level, he probably can’t write books..."

At that moment, Helen walked out from the kitchen carrying dishes. She had been eavesdropping the whole time and now spoke with pride and satisfaction:

"I always knew our Evan had potential and would achieve great things. Now he’s a real writer! Who knows, he might become a famous author soon. This little bit of money is nothing!"

Helen was truly enjoying this moment of triumph. She felt sweeter and more satisfied than if she had eaten honey.
