Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Growing Feelings

After shopping a while longer with Emma, Evan finally gave in to her insistence. She bought him two sets of casual clothes and a new pair of Adidas sneakers. Only then did the slightly tired pair head back home.

After spending more time with Emma, Evan realized she wasn’t as cold and unapproachable as he once thought.

Once she accepted him, Emma became very open, generous, and even a little clingy.

Even inside the mall, she happily held Evan’s arm. When he held her hand directly, she would only blush sweetly and smile, showing no resistance at all.

Under Evan’s emotional and financial efforts, Emma also started talking to him more casually, without any barriers.

Their relationship warmed up rapidly. By the time they left the mall, they were as close as real brother and sister.

Emma looked cold and proud on the outside, but deep down she was a bit lonely. Under Evan’s sincere care and gentle attention, she became more and more dependent on him, acting sweeter and more like a little bird resting on his shoulder.

"Evan, it would be so nice if you weren’t my brother-in-law..." On the way upstairs, Emma suddenly said with a touch of sadness.

Evan paused for a moment. He caught a different emotion in her words and smiled teasingly. "If I wasn’t your brother-in-law, then what would I be? If I wasn’t, I might never have met you, silly girl."

"It would be better if you were my real brother! Heehee..." Emma stuck her tongue out at him, but her smile looked a little forced.

"Being your brother-in-law is the same. From now on, you’re my real little sister. Just treat me like your real brother," Evan said with a smile, looking at her beautiful, playful face. His heart beat faster.

"Ah, I’m so tired from all that walking. I’m all sweaty. I’m going to take a shower." Emma gave him a sweet smile and went into her room.

Evan checked the time. It was already past 3 PM. In another hour or so, his in-laws and Sophia would be back. He probably wouldn’t have time to make any big moves with Emma right now, so he went back to his room, turned on the computer, and casually opened the author group chat.

Empty: My recommendation just came out! I made it to the next round! There are so many big authors in this batch. It’s going to be tough.

DogHead: Empty bro is awesome! Made it to the new book selection!

LittleFatOtaku: Empty God is invincible! This book is going to be a legend!

Evan watched a bunch of new authors sucking up to one guy who had reached the third round of recommendations. He couldn’t help feeling a bit sour.

The recommendation system on the site was based on promotion rounds.

Usually around 50-100k words, authors would get their first recommendation.

But there was a huge difference. Favored authors got better placement with covers and pictures, which meant much higher exposure.

Unfavored books only got plain text recommendations with just the title.

In each batch, nearly twenty books competed. The ones with the best collections and reading time would advance.

This "New Book Selection" was the third round.

In two years of writing, Evan had never once gotten this recommendation.

It was like an unreachable dream to him.

Even last year’s book that earned him over $15,000 only made it to the second round before being eliminated.

If Evan hadn’t stubbornly kept writing until 500-600k words and slowly built up readers, he would have thought the book was complete trash.

In truth, his book was the best in its batch and performed the strongest.

Unfortunately, after the big crackdown, once it reached a million words, it was banned in one sweep.

Evan had angrily asked the editor why. The editor casually replied, "Books in this category are all being banned. You’re not the only one. What’s so strange about it? This is the government’s decision. If you have a problem, go argue with the state."

Evan was left speechless. After working hard for over half a year and finally seeing success, his book was gone. He was back to zero again.

In anger, he posted a protest on the forum with evidence to prove his innocence. But instead of helping, it made the editor hold a grudge. Now Evan couldn’t even get his new book signed!
