Chapter 38: Unfilial Disciple, Delusional Master

"So that’s how it is..."

Ka’z muttered thoughtfully while rubbing his chin. The explanation Boi had just given him completely overturned everything he thought he knew about magic. Until now, he had assumed runes were simply another way of casting spells. Instead, they were merely the first step into something far greater.

According to Boi, the Red Scripture described two legitimate paths toward mastering magic. The first was through the Letters of Power, better known as runes. Every rune represented a single concept or command and, when arranged correctly, produced a spell.

The second path was through the Words of Power themselves. Unlike ordinary languages, they could not simply be memorized through conversation or imitation. They were the primordial language of magic itself, and learning them required years of study inside human academies. Boi claimed that even talented human children spent nearly eight years deciphering their grammar before they could cast anything beyond the simplest spells safely.

Ka’z frowned.

"...That’s strange."

He slowly lifted Shiki in front of himself while scratching the side of his head.

"Because I can already understand what every rune on this staff means."

He stared at the staff, or rather something inside him naturally interpreted it. It didn’t feel like reading words, it felt more like remembering something he had never learned.

His gaze settled upon the translucent panel before him.

[Name: Shiki]

[Type: Magic Staff] [Basic]

[Available Spells]

[Fire Ball]

[Wind Shockwave]

[Lightning Bolt]

[Earth Wall]

[Freeze Water]

Boi blinked.

"...You can tell what spells are carved into my Shiki?"

Ka’z nodded absentmindedly as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world.

"I’ve been able to ever since I picked it up."

Silence settled over the chamber. When Ka’z finally looked back up, he immediately regretted it.Boi was staring at him and the intensity behind that single eye made Ka’z increasingly uncomfortable.

He shifted awkwardly beneath the gaze before instinctively looking around the room for somewhere else to focus.

Unable to bear it anymore, he finally muttered,

"...I’m into girl and I already have someone I love."

The silence lasted another second before Boi’s face twisted violently.

"Brat! I have a wife!" He practically barked the word.

Ka’z immediately pointed a finger toward him.

"Then stop looking at me like you don’t!"

Boi nearly choked. Never in his life had he encountered a hatchling this shameless.

Children usually feared or respected adults but this little monster did neither.

"You filthy son of a thousand fathers!" Boi snapped. "I’m looking at you like this because you’re sprouting complete nonsense! Only dragons are naturally capable of reading and speaking the Language of Power without formal education!"

Ka’z’s eyes narrowed.

"First of all keep my father’s name out of your fucking mouth. Secondly, why would I lie about something this stupid?"

Boi opened his mouth and the closed it again. He didn’t have an answer.

Why would someone invent something so absurd?

"You unfilial swine. Is this how you speak to your master?"

Ka’z immediately scoffed.

"A prisoner thinks he’s some prestigious master?"

He spread both arms dramatically.

"You might as well ask to become our Chieftain while you’re at it."

Boi’s forehead visibly twitched.

"Forget it. If you’re truly capable of reading the Language of Power then tell me what the final spell says."

Ka’z raised Shiki until it rested level with his eyes. His gaze slowly settled upon the final rune. The moment he tried saying it aloud, something caught inside his throat.

An inexplicable hesitation. It was a strange instinct buried deep inside his blood warned him that speaking those words was fundamentally different from merely reading them.

"I knew it. You were lying." Boi laughed triumphantly.

Ka’z shot him an annoyed glare before returning his attention toward the staff.

"...Whatever."

He took a slow breath and then spoke.

"Krya Neris."

The words left his mouth in a language he had never learned and his voice no longer sounded entirely like his own. It had become quieter and older, almost like the whisper of a serpent echoing through a cavern.

The instant those two words escaped his lips, the cave itself reacted, an icy wind swept through the chamber. Azure light briefly flashed within Ka’z’s golden eyes before fading just as quickly.

Invisible ripples spread throughout the surrounding mana as though reality itself had acknowledged the command.

Crack...

Every damp patch of stone instantly froze and even water clinging to the walls crystallized into clear sheets of ice while the moisture beneath their feet hardened with sharp snapping sounds.

Thin white mist spread across the floor until it reached ankle height, slowly rolling throughout the prison chamber like an eerie morning fog.

Silence followed.

Ka’z remained perfectly still and his breathing had subconsciously stopped. He slowly lowered his gaze toward his own hand.

"...What..."

His voice carried genuine confusion. The spell had not felt like ordinary magic.

When he manipulated fire or earth, he consciously guided mana, willpower and aether together.

This had been different. He distinctly felt something leave him the moment those words escaped his mouth. The sensation lasted only an instant before disappearing entirely, leaving behind an uncomfortable emptiness he couldn’t properly describe.

He knew he would have to test this a few more times before he can understand the strange sensation.

Boi’s voice interrupted his thoughts.

"...Kid."

Ka’z looked up and for the first time since they had met, there wasn’t even the slightest trace of amusement on the goblin’s face, only absolute seriousness.

"Be honest, are you really a kobold? Or are you a dragon?" His eye remained locked onto Ka’z.

Ka’z immediately understood this wasn’t a joke. He thought about it briefly before deciding there was little reason to hide it.

Boi wasn’t leaving this prison alive.

"I am a kobold but I was born with a small amount of dragon bloodline. That’s why I could see your mana reserves, predict spells before they’re cast by understanding elemental particles and all that."

Silence engulfed the chamber once more.

Boi simply stared as his body had begun trembling from overwhelming excitement....

Everything finally made sense.
