Chapter 34: Ka’z Vs Boi [2]

Swoosh!

Ka’z lowered his body just as the steel staff whistled over his head. Heat still danced around his clenched fist as he twisted his hips and drove the burning punch straight toward Boi’s exposed torso.

The Battle Shaman merely smiled.

A cold grin spread across his scarred face as another rune illuminated along the shaft of the staff.

He had already seen this attack once, he had no intention of falling for it again.

"Wind Magic: Shockwave!"

Boom!

The compressed air detonated between them and a violent wall of wind burst outward in every direction, slamming into Ka’z before his fist could land. His body was thrown backward as though struck by a charging beast. His feet carved long furrows across the burning ground while both forearms instinctively crossed before his chest and blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

The attack had come too suddenly. There had been no time to activate Dragon Scales.

Fortunately for him, the spell sacrificed penetration for coverage. Since the shockwave expanded in every direction instead of focusing its force into a single point, it lacked the power to inflict a fatal wound.

Even so every bone in his body screamed. Before he could steady himself, another orange glow reflected within his golden eyes.

Brrrr!

It was a Fire Ball already halfway across the battlefield.

Ka’z’s pupils shrank.

’He’s trying to force me into using Dragon Scales...’

If he activated them now, his stamina would drain even faster. If he didn’t he would burn.

Grinding his teeth together, Ka’z violently threw himself to the side. The blazing sphere missed him by little more than a hair’s breadth. The intense heat brushed against his scales as the fireball shot past before exploding somewhere behind him.

He struck the ground shoulder first, rolled twice, and immediately pushed himself back onto his feet.

However, the Battle Shaman was already there. The steel staff swept sideways.

Bam!

The heavy skull smashed into Ka’z’s face and his head snapped violently to one side as several golden scales tore free from his cheek. Blood sprayed through the air while his small body spun before crashing onto his back.

His vision blurred but before he could recover something heavy slammed onto his chest and pinned firmly against him.

"Blegh!"

Warm blood surged into his throat before spilling from his lips. His lungs struggled for air beneath the crushing weight.

Even through his fading vision, Ka’z noticed tiny azure particles gathering around one of the runes.

His heart dropped.

’Shit... I threw...’

He had spent the entire fight conserving stamina. Refusing to activate Dragon Scales whenever possible. Now, that decision had finally caught up with him.

The glowing rune shone brilliantly.

"Lightning Magic: Lightning Bolt!"

Crack!

Brilliant blue light engulfed the battlefield and electricity surged through Ka’z’s body. His muscles convulsed violently beneath the Dragon Scales that erupted across his chest and arms at the final possible instant.

The lightning scattered across the hardened scales, leaving smoke drifting upward from the gaps between them.

Boi looked down quietly and there was genuine admiration in his eyes. He truly hadn’t expected Ka’z to summon Dragon Scales quickly enough.

Even now the child continued exceeding his expectations. Still It no longer mattered. Ka’z remained pinned beneath the staff. The numbing current running through his body would keep him immobilized until the Dragon Scales receded.

After that the battle would end.

The Battle Shaman let out a quiet sigh.

"It’s over, child. You fought well."

His voice carried neither mockery nor hatred. He looked into Ka’z’s blazing golden eyes.

"Don’t be too hard on yourself."

Ka’z remained silent. His fingers continued gripping the staff pressing against his chest.

"No you son of a bitch. It’s over for you."

Ka’z growled through clenched teeth and his grip tightened.

The Battle Shaman frowned and at that exact moment one of the runes beneath Ka’z’s hand suddenly flared with pale blue light and Boi’s eyes widened.

"...No fucking way..." His voice faltered.

"Wind Magic: Shockwave!"

Boom!

The spell exploded point blank.

A violent blast of compressed wind hurled the Battle Shaman backward before he could even react.

His massive body flew several meters through the air before crashing heavily into the ground. He bounced once before sliding several more meters across the dirt, finally coming to a stop beside the burning remains of a collapsed wagon.

Blood escaped his lips as he clutched his abdomen while the steel staff landed beside Ka’z with a dull metallic clang.

Silence descended upon the battlefield. Only the crackling fire and the strained breathing of two exhausted warriors remained.

Neither moved immediately.

"You..."

Boi coughed violently before glaring toward the young kobold.

"...You fucking rat."

Ka’z slowly rolled onto one side, coughing blood onto the scorched earth before answering.

"You stupid fuck, I told you. Your damn magic is flawed."

Boi’s expression darkened while Ka’z forced himself into a sitting position.

"Once those runes are carved they only answer to mana. The moment I got hold of that staff, I had just as much authority over it as you."

The Battle Shaman stared at him in stunned silence. Ka’z shook his head tiredly.

"God, I can’t believe human magic is this flawed. Or maybe you goblins are simply too stupid to use it properly."

He looked directly into Boi’s eyes and the Battle Shaman’s jaw tightened.

"Don’t push your luck, kid..."

"No. You don’t push yours."

Ka’z immediately cut him off. His hand reached toward the fallen staff. The instant his fingers wrapped around it every rune engraved upon its surface illuminated simultaneously.

The Battle Shaman’s pupils contracted as Ka’z slowly raised the weapon. Its tip pointed directly toward Boi.

"I’m the one holding the weapon now. So I make the rules. And I say you stay exactly where you are or you’ll be the only scorched corpse your friends find when they come looking for this camp."

A small smile appeared despite his battered appearance.

Ding!
