Lin Ye didn’t make any rash moves. Here, he was just an ordinary person, and many things could easily kill him.
Faint white mist drifted into the room. Some survivors were still awake, and they too noticed the situation by the window.
Like Lin Ye, they didn’t make any rash moves either.
“Should I go close the window?”
Jeffrey whispered in Lin Ye’s ear.
The thick fog represented danger. He didn’t think they could afford to just wait like this.
“Not yet. If the fog was poisonous, we’d already be dead. We should worry more about what’s hiding inside the fog.”
If something had opened the window, it had likely already spotted them, yet it hadn’t come in.
This suggested that maybe it couldn’t enter, or that it needed to meet some condition first.
For example, if the fog concentration in the air reached a certain level.
Getting close to the window wasn’t a good idea, because someone had vanished at that very spot before.
“You can have someone move a table over to block the window, but don’t get near it.”
The kitchen had several metal tables for holding cookware. These tables were large enough that just one stood upright could seal the window.
“Alright.”
Jeffrey woke up a few prison guards. They lifted a table and, from a distance, used its surface to block the window.
After that, they tossed some clutter near the table, completely sealing off the channel through which the fog was entering the room.
A moment later, the blocked window showed no change. The survivors in the room all breathed a sigh of relief.
Lin Ye kept staring at the window. He didn’t know what was out there, nor whether it had given up. This wasn’t the time to let his guard down.
“You rest. I’ll have someone keep watch.”
Jeffrey walked over to Lin Ye and spoke.
“Alright. Have two people watch the window, one watch the entrance, and one keep an eye on other areas. Wake me up immediately if anything happens. Those on night watch can rest during the day.”
Lin Ye closed his eyes, and soon he woke up on the other side.
“Still about five minutes. Nothing’s changed here.”
Little Guardian had calculated the time Lin Ye spent falling asleep each time.
“Huh? Why are those parasitic nodes moving so fast?”
Lin Ye couldn’t sense the state of those parasitic nodes from here, only their approximate positions. Previously, all the nodes had been hiding inside the train without leaving it.
But just now, those parasitic nodes suddenly left the train and started accelerating. If he couldn’t sense their trajectory, Lin Ye would have thought they were constantly teleporting.
“I suggest you abandon those nodes. If they get dragged into the depths of the Dreamrealm, you might be affected too.”
Little Guardian said seriously.
“Wait a bit longer. They must have run into some kind of trouble inside the train. Based on their position changes, we might be able to get some information about this place.”
Lin Ye could sever the connection with the parasitic nodes at any time, so he wasn’t in a hurry to abandon them.
And as those nodes moved, Lin Ye noticed that the ritual here was also undergoing some changes. The two seemed to be connected in some way.
Just as Lin Ye was pondering this connection, a strange creature pieced together from numerous human fragments appeared in the center of the area.
That creature didn’t approach Lin Ye. Instead, it performed various odd movements on the spot, as if every part of its body had a mind of its own.
But its body, guided by some kind of force, began moving toward that passageway.
“What is this?”
Lin Ye could roughly guess where the materials for this thing came from. After all, not many people entered the depths of the Dreamrealm, but he had no idea what this thing was for.
“If this thing is sent into the depths of the Dreamrealm, then the owners of these organs will also be dragged in. These people are done for. We’d better leave here as soon as possible.”
Little Guardian watched the stitched creature drift away. This place didn’t seem to be a nest for some Dreamrealm creature but rather a passageway connecting to the depths of the Dreamrealm.
“It’s not safe outside either. Even those spiritual energy users hiding in the train have run away. Even if we can get out, we can’t leave this place.”
Lin Ye knew that people who liked holding these kinds of activities were probably unreliable. He just wondered if the mastermind this time was the same organization as last time.
If it was still that organization, then they were pretty fated to meet.
“But this is a passageway to the depths of the Dreamrealm, and the ritual is running. If we keep staying here, we might get forcibly moved into the depths of the Dreamrealm.”
As part of the mental defense system, Little Guardian still thought Lin Ye should leave this dangerous area as soon as possible.
“It’s fine. The passageway has more than one entrance. After the ritual runs a bit longer, we can close the channel connected to this area and then hide here, waiting for the ritual to end.”
By comparing the connection between the parasitic nodes and the ritual, Lin Ye had already gained some understanding of this place.
“…That is indeed a good plan, but there must be some very powerful Dreamrealm creature outside handling the miners. If that creature comes in to check things out, what do we do?”
Little Guardian didn’t think they could take it on here.
“So we’d better close the channel when the ritual is almost over. That might buy us some time… Do you know anything about Dreamrealm creatures?”
Lin Ye had never seen a real Dreamrealm creature, so he wasn’t sure how to deal with one.
“I don’t know. I’m just part of the mental defense system.”
Like Lin Ye, Little Guardian had never seen a Dreamrealm creature either.
“Something seems wrong over there. Keep an eye on this place for me.”
Lin Ye closed his eyes, and soon his consciousness sank into darkness.
“Doctor Lin… Doctor Lin…”
The gradually clearer calling woke Lin Ye. He opened his eyes in the Back Kitchen of the cafeteria. Some survivors were gathered around him.
“What’s wrong?”
Lin Ye didn’t think these people would wake him up for no reason.
“In the morning, someone looked through the gap in the window. That person noticed the thick fog outside seemed to have cleared. Some survivors pushed the table aside, and then we found that it wasn’t the fog outside that had dissipated, but that we were no longer in the same place as before.”
Jeffrey pointed at the window and explained.
Lin Ye looked toward the window. It was still the kind that could be pushed inward, but outside wasn’t the white mist blocking the view. Instead, it was a flat stretch of ground that looked somewhat strange.
“We didn’t dare go out to check, but this place seems to be some kind of raised flat ground… Sort of like the top of a dam…”
The prison guard was also standing nearby. After a night of rest, his condition had improved a lot compared to right after the surgery.
