Chapter 722: Chapter 78: The Dying Weigen

Su Changxing carried the scythe on his shoulder, holding the walking staff in the other hand, and turned to look at Mike, smiling as he said:

"Tell me what’s going on here, if there’s any more lies, I promise I’ll kill you."

Mike’s expression was dazed, feeling that Su Changxing was a ruthless killer, having simply slaughtered so many people without any reaction on his face, appearing calm.

However, he had no regrets, having planned that even if he died, he wouldn’t let these beasts have an easy time.

Being threatened by the plague is a helpless situation, considered a Celestial Calamity.

Being massacred by mechanical monsters let loose by those noble lords, though hateful, left no way out.

But being ridden and humiliated by people who were originally inferior to him caused all his anger to explode.

Mike hunched his neck, grit his teeth and said, "Sir, you saved my daughter and me, and even though I deceived you, I wouldn’t complain even if you killed me."

Su Changxing didn’t care about what Mike said, maintained a smile and said, "It doesn’t matter, just tell me what’s going on with this Rat God Cult? Can they really stay immortal during the plague?"

Mike was startled, realizing that Su Changxing’s attitude was far different from what he expected, seemingly indifferent to him, his daughter, and the dead people:

"I’m not really sure, but so far, no one from the Rat God Cult has died from the plague, maybe because they’re younger, or for some other reason."

"Many who opposed them have been killed. To stay alive, one must either submit to them or join them."

Even if they’re younger, how can no one die? Everyone’s resistance to the disease is different, even if related to age, it’s not direct.

Su Changxing estimated that this so-called Rat God Cult had some credibility, from the mental state of these people, they seemed a bit insane,

"Let’s go in and take a look. Have you seen someone named Nobu?"

"Nobu? I think there was such a person, but he left earlier."

"Left?"

"Yes, at the beginning, a group from that gang came, had a conflict with the Rat God Cult, but they didn’t win due to being outnumbered."

Su Changxing listened to Mike and asked, "Do you know where they went?"

Mike shook his head and said, "I don’t know, we haven’t been outside much, it’s too dangerous, if food wasn’t scarce, we wouldn’t come out."

At this point, Mike’s daughter interrupted, "I know, I heard people say they are over by the Lower Harbor, and I heard there are many people."

Mike’s daughter, though not extremely beautiful, didn’t look bad from half her face, above average, and before the plague many might have pursued her.

And Mike’s family was considered middle class, living in the West City near the East City, similar to Nobu’s situation.

This abandoned factory covered a large area, built along the riverbank, with some facilities running on hydraulics, seemingly from the early steam revolution, preserved for some reason.

After the previous events, those naked men did not come out looking for trouble again, but like rats, all hid inside, silently.

"Not coming out anymore? Let’s go in and see."

Su Changxing walked inside, curious about the Rat God Cult.

Mike nodded, bringing his daughter along. "These Rat God Cult people have no humanity. Because of them, our numbers have been halved."

"If we can’t find enough food, I suspect they’ll resort to cannibalism, those dried corpses are their food reserves."

Su Changxing looked at the ceiling, where it seemed coated with oil, blackened corpses, he nodded thoughtfully, "There should still be plenty of food in the city, no need to resort to cannibalism."

Mike shook his head and said, "These people act fierce but are very scared of dying, they don’t dare step out of this factory, instead sending us outsiders to scavenge for food."

At a corner, a naked man with a bottle leaned against the wall, drunk and muttering to himself.

Su Changxing glanced at him but didn’t pay attention, continuing to walk forward.

Unexpectedly, Mike’s daughter took a knife from Mike, walked up, and slashed the man’s neck.

In his stupor, he felt pain, struggled for a moment, then lay still, silent.

"You dare not use the knife yourself, but let your daughter do it?" Su Changxing teased.

Mike gave an embarrassed smile and said, "I’m timid and faint at the sight of blood, seeing blood up close makes my mind blur."

They walked forward, the place was empty, not a person in sight, those Rat God Cult people seemed to hide deep inside.

Su Changxing was not surprised, in this world they were just another group of ordinary people, lording over another group of ordinary people.

Moreover, because the Empire strictly controlled firearms, guns were not widespread; Nobility, law enforcement, and gang members could have them.

The difference was that the Nobility legally owned guns, while gang members did so illegally.

Along the factory walls were many iron cages, originally for dogs, now for people.

Women, in tattered clothes, bodies exposed, chained, were trapped inside, lifeless, apparently recently dead.

Mike’s daughter looked sad, whispered to Mike, "Lucy seems to have died."

Mike said expressionlessly, "Dead is dead, she should have died long ago."

Su Changxing’s gaze swept over and saw a familiar face, Weigen, the one who brought him to the Black Dog Gang earlier.

He had drastically changed, emaciated, eyes lifeless, leaning against the cage.

He seemed not dead yet.

"Weigen, is that you?" Su Changxing called out, thinking maybe he could consider Weigen an acquaintance.

The first call received no response.

Su Changxing called again, Weigen seemed to awaken from a dream, moved slightly, turned to look at Zhu Changjin, surprise on his face.

He recognized Su Changxing but thought Su Changxing had long died, wouldn’t appear in this place.

Is it an illusion?

An illusion before death.

He had heard that people have many illusions before dying, as he had heard others say before.

"Has he gone mad?" Su Changxing saw him motionless, thinking he might be insane.

Then Weigen hurriedly crawled to the edge of the cage, excitedly shouted, "Mr. Liu, is it you? How are you still alive and appearing here?"

Turns out he wasn’t mad.

Su Changxing smiled and said, "Do you need me to let you out?"

Weigen nodded quickly, "Of course, I need it, sir, you are like a light appearing before me."

He flattered incessantly, suddenly energized, despite appearing half-dead moments before.

It was hard to imagine how his emaciated, plague-stricken body managed to survive until now.

It can only be said that the human life force is surprisingly resilient.

Su Changxing raised the firearm, aimed at the cage lock, and shattered it with a shot.

Weigen crawled out of the cage, emitting an unbearable stench, weakly saying, "Is there water? I want to drink."

Once hunger reaches a certain point, you no longer feel it, but thirst remains, Weigen was in such a state.

Mike quickly took a water pouch from his chest and handed it to him, advising, "Don’t drink too much at once, there’s only this much water."

Weigen accepted the pouch, drank a small sip, and gave a grateful look.

Su Changxing smiled, "Lucky, surviving even like this."

Weigen barely swallowed the water, "I always had good luck, just stumbled this time."

Su Changxing curiously asked, "How did you get caught and end up like this?"

Weigen sighed and said, "After the Nobility ordered to massacre the city, I fled with the remaining people here."

"The people here are like maniacs, disregarding any rules."

"They ambushed us at night, we couldn’t win, some escaped, but I was captured."
