Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Preparation and Portal
Two weeks.
The settlement used every day of them.
Sylvia’s binding counter-protocol development began the morning after Kai confirmed the team. The warrior had a specific approach to building doctrine for threats she hadn’t personally encountered yet. She constructed the worst case first. Maximum binding simultaneous across multiple team members. Then built the counter from that scenario outward toward the more likely situations.
She ran Sera and Lune through the protocol repeatedly.
The first three days were rough.
Simulated binding using rope rather than actual vines. Lune calling structural weak points while Sera generated counter-current to the binding geometry. The timing between them needed to become automatic. In dense vegetation with Vine Stalker variants actively applying pressure there would be no time for coordination discussion.
By the fourth day the timing was there.
By the seventh it was automatic.
The rope simulations became inadequate. Sylvia moved the drills to the settlement’s western forest boundary where actual vine growth existed. Denser than the settlement’s cultivated areas. Closer to what NF-089 might produce.
The improvement was immediate.
Real vines behaved differently from rope. Lune’s spatial awareness reading actual plant structural patterns rather than simulated ones produced faster and more accurate weak point identification. Sera’s counter-current technique adjusted naturally when working against genuine biological material rather than manufactured approximation.
Sylvia documented everything.
She had Forge participate in the binding drills not as a counter-binding practitioner but as the fire response element. Understanding exactly where Sera and Lune needed to be during a binding release helped Forge identify where not to direct fire. Three team members working in precise proximity during an active engagement required spatial awareness from everyone. Not just Lune.
Forge’s fire testing happened separately.
She went to the western forest boundary alone the first day. Kai knew because the smell of controlled burning drifted toward the settlement in the early afternoon and several citizens went to investigate.
They came back with varying expressions.
Ember looked thoughtful. "She’s very careful about it."
Iris looked impressed. "She’s very serious about it."
Forge herself said nothing about the tests. Simply returned to the settlement each evening and read the nature fragment documentation archive before sleeping.
On the fourth day of testing Kai went to observe.
The forest boundary showed clear evidence of controlled burn work. Small areas. Precise shapes. The fire had gone exactly where she directed it and stopped exactly where she directed it to stop. No spread. No residual burning.
Yet the quality of the char marks was different from standard fire burns.
Deeper. More complete. The ambient magical energy from the Sacred World Tree’s output feeding the combustion even at the settlement’s distance from the core realm energy.
Forge was working on a section of dense undergrowth when he arrived.
She raised one hand. Blue-white fire formed around her fingers. Not the orange-yellow of standard fire. The colour shift from the magical density feeding it. She directed it toward the undergrowth in a narrow controlled stream.
The vegetation cleared faster than it should have.
She stopped. Assessed the cleared area. Made an adjustment to her hand position. Tried again on the adjacent section.
Slightly slower burn rate this time. More controlled.
She was calibrating.
Finding the specific output level that cleared vegetation efficiently without burning so hot that control became difficult.
She noticed Kai watching.
Said nothing for a moment. Continued the calibration.
Then: "In NF-089 the magical density will be higher than here."
"Yes."
"Which means the fire will be more enhanced there than what I’m working with now."
"Yes."
She looked at the cleared section. "I’m calibrating to the settlement’s ambient density and then building in a margin for NF-089’s higher environment." She paused. "It’s not precise. I won’t know the exact adjustment until we’re inside."
"How large is the margin you’re building in?"
"Forty percent above current control threshold." She looked at him. "If NF-089’s density is more than forty percent above the settlement’s ambient I’ll need adjustment time when we arrive."
"How long."
"Minutes. Not hours."
Kai filed that. Adjustment time during the first encounter needed to be accounted for in the entry formation.
Echo’s detection work in the western forest boundary produced its own surprises.
The sound-affinity fox maiden had spent her training days moving through varying density sections of the forest while the rest of the team drilled elsewhere. Testing how her Absolute Hearing performed in conditions that approximated dense vegetation environments.
She came to Kai on the ninth day.
"Sound travels through plant mass differently from open air," she said. "In open air I hear direction and distance clearly. In dense vegetation I hear density and movement instead."
"Explain the difference."
"In open air a creature at one hundred meters is simply at one hundred meters. I know exactly where it is." She thought carefully. "In dense vegetation at one hundred meters I can’t pinpoint the creature’s exact location. Yet I can hear the disturbance pattern moving through the plant mass toward us. The plants communicate the movement." She paused. "I get less precise location data but more warning time."
More warning time with less precise location.
In NF-089’s zero sight-line environment that trade was acceptable.
Lune could handle precise location through spatial awareness once Echo had provided the directional warning.
Two different detection systems covering each other’s gaps.
The elder provided her final briefing on the twelfth day.
She sat with Kai, Sylvia, and Forge together. Not the individual briefings of previous sessions. A combined session because what she had left to share required the three of them to hear simultaneously.
Vine Stalker variant pack coordination in unfamiliar territory was different from established territorial behavior. A pack encountering new intruders for the first time didn’t immediately deploy its full capability. It sent probes first. Assessed the threat. Escalated response based on what the probes reported back.
"The first encounters will be smaller groups," the elder said. "Do not assume this reflects the pack’s full size."
Sylvia: "How quickly does the escalation happen?"
"Faster than you expect. The signal communication between variants is not sound-based. It is chemical. Scent markers in the plant environment. What one variant experiences the pack knows within minutes."
Forge looked at Kai. "The fire removes the scent markers from the burned area."
The elder looked at her. "Yes. Fire disrupts chemical communication as well as providing the obvious physical effects." A pause. "The variant pack will recognize this quickly. Expect them to adapt their communication method after the first fire encounter."
"Adapt how?"
"Physical contact signaling. Direct touch communication between pack members. Slower than chemical. Yet fire-resistant."
Sylvia made a notation. "Once they switch to contact signaling they need to be kept separated."
"Yes. A separated variant pack fights as individuals. Together they fight as something considerably more dangerous."
The morning of departure arrived cold and clear.
The team assembled at the portal site before dawn. Seven members. Kai. Sylvia. Forge. Sera. Nova. Echo. Lune.
Iris was at the gate.
She performed the farewell with her established ritual. Equipment inspection. Individual words for each person.
She reached Forge.
Looked at her.
Forge was wearing her standard training gear. Nothing different from any morning’s training session. Her expression was the same focused certainty it always was.
Iris looked at her for a moment.
Then held out the silver fabric bracelet.
Forge took it.
Looked at it.
Tied it around her left wrist with the same deliberateness she brought to everything.
Iris nodded once.
That was the farewell.
Forge walked toward the portal.
Kai fell into step beside her.
"Ready?" he said.
She looked at the portal. The green light. The dense warm atmospheric signature already visible through the connection.
"I’ve been ready for three months," she said.
They stepped through.
NF-089 arrived around them immediately.
Ground level. Dense vegetation in every direction. Sight lines reduced to three meters before the plant mass closed completely. The air warm and heavy with the particular richness of a high magical density nature environment.
Forge inhaled.
Her hands came up instinctively.
Blue-white fire flickered at her fingertips. Reacting to the ambient magical density before she had directed it to do anything.
She controlled it immediately. Pulled it back. Recalibrated in real time exactly as she had described.
Took approximately forty seconds.
Then she looked at Kai.
"It’s stronger than the margin I built in."
"How much stronger?"
"Still manageable." A pause. "Better than I expected, actually."
Echo’s ears were already moving through their independent adjustment range. Reading the sound environment.
"Movement," she said. "Southwest. Twenty meters. Coming toward us."
Eight minutes.
That was how long it had taken.
Sylvia raised her hand. The formation closed.
The first encounter was coming through the undergrowth.
And NF-089 had begun.
