Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Wind Crystal Yield
Three days of extraction work in the upper cloud layer.
The elevated atmospheric phase held longer than Kai had expected. Aria confirmed each morning through the currents that the energy concentration was still running above standard. The window stayed open and they used every hour of it.
The routine established itself quickly.
Dawn. Ascend. Extract. Descend before the apex creature completed its morning territory check. Rest. Reassess. Repeat.
Kai stopped being a mid-range observer after the first day.
The extraction work itself needed hands. Sera directed the crystal separation technique. Yet holding the preservation containers while crystals were live-extracted required someone with steady hands and fast reaction time. He had both. He positioned himself directly at the extraction points beside Sera and worked.
The upper cloud layer stopped feeling alien by the second day.
It started feeling like somewhere he was learning.
On the third morning he was ahead of Aria at the platform edge watching the cloud formations shift through their predawn behavior patterns. She appeared beside him and looked at what he was looking at.
"You’re reading the currents," she said.
"Trying to."
"The luminescent pockets moving northeast." She pointed. "That’s the energy phase beginning to wind down. When they move northeast consistently instead of randomly, the concentration is dropping."
Kai watched the pockets. Northeast drift. Gradual but consistent.
"How long before the phase ends?"
"Today is likely the last day at elevated grade."
One more full extraction window.
"Upper layer first," he said. "Then the lower depths."
Aria looked at him.
"Both in one day."
"The lower depth descent doesn’t require your atmospheric management the same way the upper layer does. Different pressure environment." He looked at the cloud formations. "You’ll have recovery time between."
She thought about this.
"Doable," she said. "Not comfortable."
"When has comfortable produced anything useful."
Aria laughed. Short and genuine. "Fair."
The morning upper layer extraction was the most efficient of the three days. The team moved through the crystal formations with the confidence of people who had learned the environment through direct experience rather than documentation.
Kai worked the extraction line alongside Sera.
She separated at the base anchor. He caught and containerized. The timing between them had become automatic by the third day. No verbal coordination required. Simply two people who had done the same motion enough times that it had become a shared rhythm.
"This cluster is the densest yet," Sera said. Her silver light mapping the anchor structure. "The energy phase pushed the formation rate significantly during the three days."
"How many extraction points?"
She scanned. "Eight clean separations possible. Four more if we work the outer growth carefully."
"Take the eight. Leave the outer growth to develop."
"The outer growth will be ready in what timeframe?"
Kai ran a quick authority analysis.
**Crystal Formation Rate - Elevated Phase**
**Standard Growth: 12-18 days per extraction point**
**During Elevated Phase: 6-9 days**
"Nine days minimum. Probably less given what the phase pushed into them."
Sera nodded and began the separations.
Kai caught each crystal as it came free. The preserved charge intact. The grade 2 elevated quality consistent with every previous extraction during the phase.
Eight crystals. Clean. Fast.
Above them Echo was tracking the apex creature’s morning patrol route with the particular focus she brought to continuous monitoring.
"It changed its pattern today," she said.
Kai looked up from the preservation container. "How."
"The perimeter check is running tighter. Closer to the central territory. The wingbeat cadence is different from the previous three mornings." She tilted her head. "Not threat behavior. Preparatory."
"Preparing for what?"
"I don’t know. Yet." She tracked for another moment. "The elevated phase ending. Maybe it responds to the phase transition."
Lune was at the cluster’s edge. Her feet on the compressed wind Aria was generating. Looking not at the crystal formations but at the cloud mass structure around them.
"The phase energy is concentrating downward," she said. "I can feel it through the air density. The upper layer is releasing it toward the lower depths as the phase ends."
Everyone looked at her.
"The lower depth zone is going to be more active today than any standard day." She looked at Kai. "Whatever is down there will be more accessible."
He made the decision immediately. "We descend to the lower depths after midday. Upper extraction complete before then."
The team moved to the second formation concentration. Then the third. Kai working the catch-and-containerize role through both. His hands had learned the motion. The specific angle to receive a freshly separated crystal without disrupting its lateral energy connections before the preservation seal engaged.
By midday the upper layer extraction was complete.
The total three-day yield: thirty-one upper layer wind crystals. Grade 2 elevated during active phase. Specialist appraisal required before market approach but the quality was visible without analysis.
The descent to the lower depth zone happened after a two-hour rest period on the main platform.
Aria had her recovery time. She used it lying flat on the compressed wind with her eyes closed and her hands relaxed. Not sleeping. Simply allowing the ambient currents to replenish what three consecutive mornings of sustained atmospheric management had consumed.
When she stood up she looked like herself again.
"Ready," she said simply.
The descent was different from anything the team had done before.
Going up required fighting the pressure differential. Going down surrendered to it. The compressed wind platform Aria generated beneath them decreased in altitude steadily. A controlled descent rather than a freefall. Yet the sensation of moving toward something rather than away from it was distinct.
The light changed as they dropped.
The bioluminescent cloud quality faded. The darkness below was genuine darkness. Not complete. Yet close. The fragment’s ambient light didn’t reach the lower depth zone in any meaningful way.
Kai activated a divine energy projection at low intensity. Not as a weapon. Simply illumination. A soft golden light extending outward from his hand that gave the team five meters of reliable visibility.
Sera’s silver light added another layer. She maintained a constant low-level luminescence around her hands that she hadn’t been asked to produce. She had simply noticed the darkness and responded to it.
The pressure increased as they descended.
Not dangerously. Yet perceptibly. Kai felt it in his chest first. Then in his ears. The atmospheric adaptation aids compensating yet not completely eliminating the adjustment required.
Lune stood at the platform edge and looked downward.
Her spatial awareness reading the environment below through air density variation. She had been tracking the Root Network signal continuously since the descent began.
"It’s close," she said quietly. "Fifty meters below us at most."
Echo was tracking sound.
"The resonance from below is different from the upper layer," she said. "The cloud mass resonance up there was continuous and layered. This is..." She paused. "Rhythmic."
"Rhythmic how," Kai said.
"Regular intervals. Like a pulse." She looked at him. "Something down here is generating a rhythmic energy output."
Kai opened the authority analysis as they descended further.
**Environmental Analysis: SF-447 Lower Depth Zone**
**Ambient Pressure: Elevated**
**Light: Minimal**
**Dominant Energy: Compressed Atmospheric + Unknown Secondary**
**Unknown Secondary Energy: Rhythmic Output Detected**
**Classification: Ancient Feature - Possible**
**Authority Compatibility: Moderate-High**
**Recommendation: Direct assessment required**
Ancient feature. Moderate-high authority compatibility.
The same assessment pattern as every significant realm discovery since the first Root Heart.
Twenty meters below the main platform a secondary surface appeared in Kai’s divine light.
Not compressed wind. Actual stone. Dark and dense and covered in a mineral deposit that caught his illumination and reflected it in multiple colors simultaneously.
The pressure-formed mineral deposits Senna had predicted.
Yet that wasn’t what Lune was looking at.
She was looking at the center of the stone surface where the rhythmic energy pulse was strongest.
Kai looked at it too.
A formation of stone rising from the surface floor. Natural in appearance. Yet the pattern was wrong for geological formation. Too regular. Too deliberate in the way things that had been shaped over extremely long periods by a consistent force rather than random pressure became deliberate.
He knelt on the stone surface and pressed both hands flat against it.
The pulse moved through his palms immediately.
Not the Root Heart pulse from the realm. Similar. Yet different in character. Older somehow. More compressed. As though the same fundamental energy had been subjected to extreme pressure over an extremely long period.
The authority responded.
**Ancient Feature Detected**
**Classification: Compressed Root Node**
**Status: Dormant - Partial**
**Connection: Ancient Root Network - Severed**
**Original Connection Point: Unknown**
**Authority Compatibility: High**
**Note: This node was once connected to a larger Root Network. The network connection was severed at an unknown point. Node has been running in isolation since severance.**
**Estimated Isolation Duration: Thousands of Years**
Kai read the notification twice.
A Root Node. Connected to an ancient Root Network that no longer existed. Running in isolation for thousands of years on whatever residual energy it had accumulated before the connection was severed.
The rhythmic pulse Echo had been hearing.
The Root Network signal Lune had been tracking since the expedition began.
A node so old it had been here before the fragment itself had taken its current form.
Lune knelt beside him.
Her hand pressed against the stone surface near his.
She said nothing for a long moment.
Then: "It knows we’re here."
"Yes."
"It’s been alone for a very long time."
Kai looked at the formation.
Thousands of years of isolated rhythmic output with no network to send it to. No response. Simply continuing because that was what it did. Because stopping would require a decision and nodes didn’t make decisions.
They simply ran.
"Can we reconnect it?" Lune asked.
Kai checked the authority interface.
**Reconnection Options:**
**Option 1: Absorb Node - Authority Energy: +15**
**Option 2: Connect to Realm Root Network**
**Connection Cost: 12 Authority Energy**
**Effect: Node joins realm’s Ancient Root Network**
**Node Output: Contributes to realm spiritual density continuously**
**Additional Effect: Node location becomes accessible from realm Root Network**
**Caution: Node will remain in SF-447. Connection crosses dimensional boundary. First cross-dimensional Root Network link.**
First cross-dimensional Root Network link.
Kai looked at the node.
Then at Lune.
The child was watching him with her amber-gold eyes. Reading his spatial positioning. His weight distribution. The small tells that said he had already decided and was simply confirming it.
She was right.
"Authority Energy current status," he said quietly.
**Authority Energy: 83**
Twelve energy to connect. Leaving seventy-one.
He pressed both hands fully against the stone formation.
Activated the connection option.
The pulse changed immediately.
From rhythmic isolation to something directed. A single sustained output moving upward through the dimensional boundary toward the realm’s Root Network.
A golden warmth spread through his hands.
Then settled.
**Cross-Dimensional Root Connection: Established**
**SF-447 Compressed Root Node: Connected**
**Realm Root Network: Expanded**
**Continuous Spiritual Density Contribution: Active**
**Lune - Root Network Resonance: Connection Detected**
**Note: Lune can now perceive and access this node through the realm network**
Lune inhaled sharply.
Her hand on the stone surface beside his went still.
Then she looked at Kai with an expression he hadn’t seen from her before.
Wonder. Pure and unguarded. The expression of someone who had been perceiving something distant through a clouded signal and had suddenly received it clearly.
"I can feel the realm," she said.
"Yes."
"From here." She looked at the stone. "Across the dimensional boundary. I can feel the Sacred World Tree. The Root Hearts." She pressed her palm flat. "Sol."
Kai looked at the ancient node.
Thousands of years of isolation ended in a single moment.
Not because it had been discovered. Nodes waited to be discovered without urgency.
Because something had come along that was worth connecting to.
