Eight days remaining in the exclusive window.
The expedition’s final phase.
Kai gathered the team the morning after the western territory extraction. Not for a full debrief. Simply to align on the remaining priorities and the order they would be addressed.
The plateau’s third extraction round. The condensate depression’s third harvest. One return to the western column bases if timing allowed.
Then close the fragment.
Not abandon it.
Close it deliberately. With full knowledge of what it contained and what it could offer in future windows if exclusive rights were re-registered.
That distinction mattered.
Abandoning a resource implied it had been exhausted.
SF-291 hadn’t been exhausted.
It had been understood.
Understanding was different.
The team entered the fragment for the fifth time with the ease of people returning to somewhere familiar.
The atmospheric conditions were standard. Storm center positioned east again. The serpent signatures western and inactive in the early morning hours.
The plateau first.
The network had continued its regeneration cycle since the previous extraction. Veil assessed the outer ring’s status on arrival.
"Third round of peripheral sections has re-established. Both low and high energy sections have new growth." She moved through the formation carefully. "The core network has strengthened since the first extraction day."
"Strengthened how?"
"The repeated selective extraction has stimulated growth response in the inner sections. The core is producing more energy than it was on day one." She looked at Kai. "Selective extraction may actually be improving the plateau’s overall output rather than simply preserving it."
A resource that improved through careful use.
The opposite of depletion.
The extraction proceeded efficiently.
The team’s fifth time working the plateau had produced a rhythm so established that each person moved without verbal coordination. Positions taken automatically. Techniques applied without instruction.
Seven peripheral specimens extracted. Six high-energy. One large specimen that exceeded any previous size measurement from the plateau formation.
Luna containerized the large specimen last.
She looked at it through the container panel.
"Marek’s very interested buyer is going to have questions about this one."
The specimen’s gold tip pressed against the container’s upper panel.
"He can ask them. Marek manages the response."
Luna made the notation.
The condensate depression was next.
Third harvest.
The depression floor had re-established fully from the second extraction. Upper layer sheets thicker than either previous round as the pattern Veil had identified continued.
Each harvest cycle produced more concentrated material than the previous.
The depression was maturing.
Thirty-nine sheets extracted.
Fewer than round two’s forty-three but significantly denser.
Rowan’s alchemical grade assessment would likely push the per-sheet value upward.
Luna calculated this quietly while containerizing.
Showed Kai the revised projection.
The third condensate delivery to Greenleaf would generate more income than either previous delivery despite fewer total sheets.
Quality compounding over quantity.
That principle had appeared consistently across the expedition.
Better technique. Better timing. Better understanding of each resource type.
Always producing more from less as knowledge accumulated.
By midday both established extraction sites were complete.
Four hours of window remaining in the day.
The western column bases.
The team moved toward the western territory.
The serpent signatures showed the patrol pair completing their northern loop as the team reached the ridge line.
Timing was tighter than the extraction day had been.
Yet manageable.
"We wait for the patrol to clear."
Twenty minutes at the ridge.
The patrol pair completed its northern loop and began the return south.
The stationary pair remained at their anchor positions.
Kai looked at Sylvia.
"Same approach."
"Same approach."
The neutralization procedure executed with the smoothness of a team that had done this successfully once before.
Aria’s binding constructs deployed cleanly.
Both serpents contained during display phase.
The team entered the western formation zone.
The column bases had accumulated new shed material over the nine days since the first collection.
Not as much as the initial centuries of accumulation had produced.
Yet meaningful additional quantity.
Luna and Kai collected while Veil monitored energy patterns and Nova tracked the patrol timing from her boundary position.
Thirty-one additional fragments recovered across eleven column bases.
The withdrawal proceeded without incident.
Aria released the binding constructs.
The serpents registered freedom and returned to anchor positions.
No pursuit.
At the portal site Kai looked back across SF-291 one final time for the day.
Then activated the return portal.
The settlement received them in late afternoon.
The debrief with Thessaly was brief.
Numbers confirmed. Projections updated. Final delivery schedule to both Marek and Greenleaf coordinated.
The financial picture for the expedition’s complete yield was clearer than any projection had been.
Thessaly presented the final summary document that evening.
Three rounds of Grade 1 provisional plateau crystals.
Three rounds of Storm Condensate sheets.
Initial western territory surface collection plus one return collection.
Total realized and projected income.
The number represented complete financial transformation for the settlement.
Not wealth in the divine city sense of the word.
Yet for a recently upgraded Town rank settlement with fifty citizens, a sacred world tree, three undiscovered root hearts, and an authority approaching Intermediate rank.
It was the exact resource base needed for the next stage of development.
Kai looked at the document.
"What does this fund."
Not a question. An invitation for Thessaly’s assessment.
The consultant had prepared for it.
She produced a development plan organized into three priority tiers.
Tier one. Immediate construction and equipment procurement already approved. Archive completion. Expanded Alchemy Station. Stone quarrying equipment. Training hall fittings. Second realm boundary expansion.
Tier two. Medium-term development enabled by expedition income. A permanent market structure with external trading capability rather than the current internal arrangement. A dedicated scouting and exploration team separate from the primary expedition team. Beginning infrastructure for a future harbor district along the river for when Tide Maiden integration eventually occurred.
Tier three. Long-term strategic positioning. A presence in Aurelis Divine City beyond the trading relationships. A small permanent facility in the Merchant District. Not a shop yet. A base of operations. A place from which Kai’s settlement could operate in the city without inn accommodations every visit.
Kai read all three tiers.
Luna had already reviewed them.
She looked up.
"Tier three’s city facility."
"It changes our relationship with the divine city."
"From visitor to resident."
"Yes."
Luna thought.
"That invites a different level of scrutiny than visiting does."
"It also provides a different level of capability."
She acknowledged this with a small nod.
"Tier one immediately. Tier two over the next four weeks. Tier three requires more consideration."
Thessaly had clearly expected this response.
She made the notation without argument.
The remaining days of the exclusive window passed without additional expedition entries.
The established sites needed time between extraction rounds. The western territory had been accessed twice. Entering without purpose simply to be inside the fragment served nothing.
The team used the time differently.
Sylvia structured the expedition experience into formal training doctrine for the settlement. Combat techniques developed during SF-291 encounters documented and incorporated into the standard training program.
Aria developed a wind magic training module for the Spiritual Training Hall based on what the storm environment had revealed about her own capability’s upper limits.
Veil worked with Mira on applying the Spirit Sight construction analysis she had conducted during the expedition to improvements in the settlement’s existing buildings. Three structures were identified for targeted Spirit Stone reinforcement that would improve their passive energy efficiency.
Nova spent the days at the Sacred World Tree.
Her Foresight had developed noticeably during the expedition. The settlement environment, Sol’s Evolution Amplification, Iris’s Awakening Catalyst, all of it contributing to capability that was no longer fragmentary.
More coherent. More accessible when intentionally engaged.
She came to Kai on the final day of the exclusive window.
"The next subspace."
Kai looked at her.
"What do you see."
Nova was quiet for a moment.
"Nothing specific yet."
She looked toward the northeast. Toward the portal site.
"But it won’t be like this one."
"Different environment."
"Different everything." She paused. "This one was quiet. Mostly."
She looked at Kai.
"The next one won’t be quiet."
Kai thought about the race acquisition roadmap. The subspace sequence he had been building toward since before the first expedition.
The Verdant Hollow was next.
A nature fragment world.
Dense living jungle. Unusual creature variants. And somewhere within it a colony of Spirit Fairies living inside a colossal hollow tree.
The first opportunity to expand the settlement’s population beyond fox maidens.
Not quiet.
Nova was accurate.
The exclusive window expired the following morning.
SF-291 remained available for non-exclusive access.
Yet Kai had no intention of returning without exclusive rights.
The western territory’s column bases would continue accumulating shed material.
The plateau network would continue strengthening.
The condensate depression would continue maturing.
When the time came to register rights again the fragment would offer more than it had offered this window.
Better understanding. Better technique. Better team capability.
Better everything.
He filed a note in the settlement’s formal documentation.
SF-291 - Re-register exclusive rights in future window. Priority resource site. Full site knowledge established. Western territory accessible with current team capability. Significant undiscovered depth extraction potential remains.
The first subspace exploration of the Nine-Tailed Divine Empire was complete.
What it had built wasn’t only in the preservation containers or the income records or the development plans.
It was in the team that had entered an unknown fragment world and learned it thoroughly.
That capability.
That accumulated knowledge of how to move in unknown spaces.
Would matter more than any single resource in what came next.
