Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Void-Touched

The portal delivered them to SF-291 in the early morning.

Standard assessment first.

Aria checked atmospheric conditions. Storm center positioned northwest. Strong updrafts across the plateau region. The western territory’s cloud formations were dense and low as observed during the ridge reconnaissance.

The threat device.

**Threat Assessment - SF-291**

**Moderate Signatures: 4**

**Stationary Pair: Western formation zone - 290 meters**

**Patrol Pair: Southern position - 510 meters**

**Behavior: Inactive**

Patrol pair at maximum southern distance.

The window was open.

"We move now."

The team crossed toward the western territory at measured pace.

The pale stone ground transitioned gradually. The dark mineral inclusions increased with every fifty meters of westward progress. By the time the formation columns became visible ahead the ground beneath them was threaded through with dark veins so dense the pale stone had become secondary.

The columns themselves were extraordinary up close.

Eight meters tall at the nearest grouping. The dark stone absorbing light rather than reflecting it. Yet the absorbed light wasn’t lost. It moved within the material. Slow currents of captured luminescence flowing through the mineral structure like something alive.

The atmosphere above the western territory was visibly different.

The cloud formations lower. The lightning exchanges more frequent and more direct. Not the diffuse atmospheric trading of the eastern and central sections. Here the discharges came down to within meters of the formation tops before redirecting back upward.

Active exchange between ground and sky.

The columns were participating in the storm the same way the plateau crystals did.

Yet at a completely different scale.

Sylvia raised one hand.

Thirty meters from the nearest stationary signature.

The team stopped.

Kai looked at the threat device.

Both stationary signatures remained inactive.

Not yet aware.

"Formation."

Aria moved immediately along the ridge line to the north. Her approach angle separating from Kai and Sylvia’s vector at the required sixty-five degrees.

Luna and Nova positioned at the territorial boundary behind them.

Veil moved to a monitoring position with clear sight lines to the patrol pair’s last known location.

Kai looked at Sylvia.

The warrior’s expression was settled. Focused without tension.

"When you’re ready."

They advanced.

Twenty meters.

Fifteen.

The nearest serpent registered them.

The creature was larger than the survey documentation had suggested.

Four meters of scaled body with a dorsal ridge running its full length. The ridge crackled with contained electrical discharge that increased in intensity as the serpent oriented toward the two approaching figures.

Display phase.

The body raised. The ridge discharged in visible arcs. Lateral movement beginning to cut the approach angle.

Kai held the neutral stance Sylvia had drilled into him.

Stationary. Not yielding. Not threatening.

The serpent processed this response.

Continued display.

From the north Aria’s approach registered on the second serpent. Its head turned. Processing two separate vectors simultaneously.

The display extended as Nova’s Foresight had suggested.

Thirty-eight seconds of assessment rather than thirty.

At thirty-two seconds Aria deployed the first binding construct.

A compressed air formation that wrapped around the left serpent’s movement range with the precision the afternoon practice sessions had built.

The construct held immediately.

The serpent registered the containment. Tested it. Found the boundary firm.

The second binding launched.

Aria corrected for the right serpent’s different movement pattern exactly as Nova’s notes had described.

The adjustment was clean.

Second binding held.

Both serpents contained within their display positions.

Neither had triggered resource response.

The plan had held.

Sylvia exhaled once.

Then looked at Kai.

"Ninety minutes."

The patrol pair signatures remained south according to Veil’s immediate update.

They moved into the western formation zone.

Up close the columns were unlike anything from the expedition’s previous days.

The dark mineral wasn’t simply stone with unusual conductivity.

It was structural.

Organized.

Each column had internal patterns that didn’t follow standard geological formation principles.

Veil’s Spirit Sight was immediately overwhelmed.

Her hands came up. Eyes widened.

"I need a moment."

They gave her one.

Two minutes of processing.

Then she lowered her hands.

"The energy saturation inside these formations isn’t passive accumulation."

Her voice was careful with the precision of someone describing something without adequate reference vocabulary.

"The mineral is converting the storm energy. Not storing it. Converting it into something else inside the structure."

"Converting it into what?"

"I don’t have a classification for the output." She looked at Kai. "It’s not electrical anymore inside the columns. It’s something that electrical energy becomes when it’s processed through this mineral over centuries."

Kai opened the authority interface.

**Evolution Analysis: Western Formation**

**Target: Void-Touched Storm Column**

**Classification: Void-Touched Storm Mineral**

**Formation Process: Atmospheric electrical energy → Extended mineral processing → Void-adjacent energy state**

**Properties:**

**Void-Adjacent Energy: High Concentration**

**Structural Integrity: Exceptional**

**Evolution Compatibility: Extremely High**

**Authority Resonance: High**

**Applications:**

**Evolution Catalyst: Significant**

**Authority Development Material: Exceptional**

**Void-Adjacent Technique Enabler: Advanced**

**Market Classification: Above Standard Scale**

**Extraction Feasibility: Possible with appropriate technique**

Evolution Catalyst.

Authority Development Material.

Extremely high evolution compatibility.

High authority resonance.

Kai read the full analysis twice.

The columns weren’t simply a rare resource.

They were directly relevant to the Divine Evolution Authority.

Materials that supported authority development.

That could accelerate the rank progress toward Intermediate.

That resonated with the authority’s fundamental nature.

The thirty-four percent that had become sixty-one percent after the Primordial Fragment absorptions.

These columns could push that further.

Potentially to Intermediate rank itself.

He looked at the nearest column.

**Extraction Assessment:**

**Standard extraction technique: Insufficient**

**Spirit energy directed extraction: Possible for surface material**

**Depth extraction: Requires authority-compatible technique**

**Recommended: Surface material collection only at current capability**

**Surface yield per column: Moderate**

**Column integrity preserved by surface extraction**

Surface material only.

Yet surface material from formations with this property profile.

"Veil. Surface layer assessment."

The fox maiden examined the nearest column carefully.

"The outer five centimeters of material have a different energy state from the interior. Less converted. More electrical in nature." She traced the column surface with her Spirit Sight tracking. "Natural flaking at the base. The surface layer sheds periodically as new conversion cycles complete inside."

Natural surface shed material.

Already separated from the column.

Requiring no extraction technique beyond collection.

Kai knelt at the column base.

A layer of shed material covered the dark stone ground around each column’s base.

Fine fragments. Dark. The same light-absorbing quality as the columns themselves.

He collected a sample.

The authority responded immediately.

Warmth spreading from his palm upward.

**Void-Touched Storm Mineral - Surface Shed**

**Grade: 1 Standard Scale**

**Authority Energy if Absorbed: Variable**

**Evolution Catalyst Potency: High**

**Recommended: Preserve for strategic use**

Grade 1 standard scale.

Not provisional.

Standard scale Grade 1.

An established classification.

With authority energy absorption potential.

Luna had been collecting shed material from the surrounding column bases systematically while Kai analyzed.

The fox maiden worked with quiet efficiency. Preservation containers opened. The dark fragments collected carefully.

She looked up.

"Every column base has accumulated material. Some considerably more than others."

"Columns with denser overhead exchange accumulate faster," Aria said from her binding maintenance position. Her focus remained on the two contained serpents yet her awareness tracked the team’s activities.

The collection work proceeded for forty minutes.

Eleven column bases accessed within the formation cluster.

The shed material yield was significant in volume.

Yet the authority’s assessment of individual fragment potency suggested strategic application rather than bulk use would maximize the return.

Veil updated the patrol tracking at the fifty minute mark.

"Patrol pair has completed southern loop. Beginning northern movement."

Forty minutes remaining in the window.

Sufficient for exit without rushing.

Kai stood from the final column base.

The collection containers held more Void-Touched material than he had expected from surface shed alone.

The columns had been accumulating and shedding for centuries.

The base deposits reflected that timeframe.

Luna sealed the final container.

She looked at Kai.

Her expression carried the particular quality that appeared when she had processed something significant during work rather than analysis.

"This material."

"Yes."

"It’s not for Marek’s buyers."

Kai looked at the containers.

"No."

Luna understood without further explanation.

The Grade 1 provisional plateau crystals served the senior buyer’s cultivation needs.

The condensate served Greenleaf’s alchemical operations.

The Void-Touched Storm Mineral served the settlement.

Specifically served the authority.

Specifically served the development that everything else was building toward.

"We move."

The team withdrew from the western formation zone at measured pace.

Aria maintained both binding constructs through the full withdrawal.

The two contained serpents tracked the team’s departure with their restricted movement.

No escalation.

At the territorial boundary Aria released the constructs simultaneously.

The serpents registered freedom. Assessed the now-empty territory. Returned to their anchor positions without pursuit.

The plan had held completely.

Veil confirmed the patrol pair’s position.

Still northern approach but slowing.

The team reached the portal site with eight minutes to spare before the patrol signatures would have reached the western zone.

Kai looked back across SF-291.

The western formations visible at distance. Dark columns against the pale stone ground.

Still accumulating.

Still converting.

Still shedding at their bases.

The exclusive window had eight days remaining.

Yet the significant extraction work was complete.

The plateau would yield one more round. The condensate one more harvest.

Standard closure of the established sites.

The western territory had given what it had to give from surface collection.

Deeper extraction required capability the current expedition didn’t possess.

Yet that capability was what the Void-Touched material would help build.

The portal opened.

The team stepped through.
