Chapter 300: The Human Auction
Kai’s eyes lit up as he studied the four chained men.
Their muscles were corded with incredible strength, and their eyes were fierce despite the poison coursing through their veins.
The old man’s words echoed...
"They can only live for thirty more days unless they are cured."
Most survivors dismissed them immediately. To others, they were a waste of medals... doomed soldiers with no future.
But Kai’s mind worked differently.
He thought of Aurora, tending to the exotic plants in Freedom Shelter.
The Mutagenic Root, the Disruptive Stem, the Oil Pod, the Sustenance Vine... all hazardous in their raw form. Yet Aurora’s talent, Plant Enthusiast, had already transformed batches of these crops into antidotes, cures, and even enhancement materials.
What had once been poison was now medication.
He thought of Vera, the alchemist, who had stabilized wounded survivors with concoctions brewed from unstable reagents. If anyone could refine a cure from Aurora’s modified plants, it was her.
Then, he also thought of the shelves of Gene Enhancement Serums stored in his shelters. Even if the poison resisted ordinary medicine, the serums might overwrite the damage, forcing their bodies to adapt....
’Write those miraculous Serums would do their work’
And finally, he thought of his portable diagnostic scanner and the medical kits stocked with antidotes and rare compounds. Between all these resources, he had more than a chance... he had a plan.
Kai’s lips curved into a faint smile beneath his visor.
’Thirty days? That’s more than enough time.’
The bidding slowed. No one wanted them. The price hovered just above three hundred medals, then stalled. Perhaps even if there was someone who had a Talent to cure them, they didn’t have enough Survivor Medals to purchase them...
Then, as soon as the bidding almost ended at 445 Survivor Medals, Kai raised his sign...
"525."
The hall fell silent. Cloaked survivors turned, whispering.
"It’s him again..."
"Always 525..."
"Why would he waste it on poisoned soldiers?"
The old man’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction. "Sold. Four super soldiers, for 525 Survivor Medals."
Chains rattled as the soldiers were led toward Kai. Their gazes locked on him. They already looked defiant yet curious.
Kai believed that they were not broken men... they were warriors waiting for purpose...
Kai stood tall and whispered to them...
"You’ve been discarded. But I don’t throw away strength. You’ll come with me. And you will live."
The soldiers exchanged glances. One of them, broader than the rest, spoke hoarsely. "We’ve heard that before. No one has cured us."
Kai smiled and understood what they were thinking... "You’ll see..."
The old man in the stage heard this small conversation and chuckled softly from the stage. "We shall see, survivor. Perhaps you will succeed where others failed. Or perhaps you will waste your medals."
Kai ignored him, already calculating.
Once back in New Haven-45, Aurora had to modify the plants further, Vera would test antidotes, and the serums would be prepared. The scanner could hopefully track the poison’s progress, and every resource would be used toward saving these men.
Because Kai knew that if he succeeded, he wouldn’t just gain four soldiers. He would gain loyalty forged from salvation. Warriors who had been abandoned by the world would fight for him with everything they had.
And that was worth far more than 525 medals.

The auction continued, each lot stranger than the last.
After the super soldiers were dragged away, the old man raised his hand and signaled for the next group.
"Next..." he announced. "
Twin sisters. Their bodies are partially crystalline, their bones hardened into diamond‑like structures. They are durable and resistant to most forms of damage. However, they are unstable... their organs are fragile, and they require constant care."
The twins were led forward, their skin shining faintly under the lights. Their eyes were hollow, and their movements were stiff.
"Starting bid: 150 Survivor Medals."
The crowd murmured.
Some raised their hands, but Kai remained silent. He had no interest in fragile liabilities. There was no way to cure them with his current abilities.
The hammer fell at 310 medals, and the twins were taken away.
"Next," the old man continued. "A man with regenerative properties. His wounds heal rapidly, but his mind is fractured. He suffers from violent episodes and cannot be trusted without restraints... However, you can imagine what you can do with his special physique..."
The man snarled, his chains rattling as he struggled against the guards.
His skin bore scars that closed even as the audience watched. It was certainly very interesting...
"Starting bid: 250."
The bidding rose quickly, survivors eager for a soldier who could recover from mortal wounds. Kai watched, unimpressed. A berserker with no discipline was more of a danger than an asset. The man sold for 420 medals eventually...
"Next..." the old man said. "A woman with elongated limbs, capable of climbing walls and ceilings like an insect. Agile, but unstable. She suffers from malnutrition and requires constant feeding."
Kai shook his head. Another liability. She sold for 180 medals.
Lot after lot passed... failed experiments, anomalies, curiosities. Some fetched high prices, others were dismissed as worthless.
Kai kept his silence observing but rarely bidding.
He had already secured the super soldiers... he didn’t need more mouths to feed unless they were special...
Then the old man raised his hand again, and the hall grew quiet.
"Next..." he said slowly. "I present this child."
Gasps rippled through the chamber...
"A child? Just a child?"
"What’s so special about him"
The guards brought forward a small boy, no older than ten. His cloak was removed, revealing pale skin and sharp eyes that glowed faintly.
He looked frightened, but he stood tall, refusing to cry.
"This child," the old man explained, "is from the Versailles Continent, like the rest of you. However, he is special. He possesses a high‑grade Gene Enhancement unique to him alone. His ability allows him to revert to human form no matter what kind of Gene Modifications he undergoes."
As soon as Kai heard this, he straightened from his seat.
