News that Kim Muhyuk had arrived at the airport spread quickly among the reporters assigned to the Prosecutors’ Office.

“President Kim Muhyuk came back to undergo questioning by the prosecution.”

“Really? When? Right now?”

“They said they don't know exactly yet. Apparently he just left Incheon Airport.”

“What? Reporter Kim! This isn't the time for that. We need to get to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office and wait.”

All the reporters who had been waiting around the Prosecutors’ Office gathered in front of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office.

A large number of reporters and cameras had already formed a crowd.

At that moment, a black sedan stopped in front of the building.

The car door soon opened, and Kim Muhyuk stepped out.

At the same time, camera shutters began clicking from every direction.

“President Kim! Do you admit to the allegations?”

“What exactly is your relationship with Candidate Choi Seohyeon?”

Questions poured in from all sides, but Muhyuk answered none of them and simply continued walking.

Only after reaching the entrance did he stop briefly.

The reporters who had been relentlessly following him also halted and stared at his mouth expectantly.

“I will sincerely explain every allegation. The truth will inevitably come to light.”

After leaving those brief words behind, Kim Muhyuk confidently entered the building.

* * *

As soon as he entered, Oh Hyunwoo and several prosecutors were waiting.

“President Kim Muhyuk. It's been a long time.”

“Yes, it has. Good to see you.”

Maintaining formal speech, the two exchanged a firm handshake.

The elevator doors opened, and Oh Hyunwoo, Yoon Jaeha, and Muhyuk stepped inside.

The other prosecutors appeared to be taking a different elevator.

As soon as the doors closed, Oh Hyunwoo smiled.

“You look good, Muhyuk.”

“And why have you gotten so skinny?”

At that moment, Yoon Jaeha cut in.

“Come on. Even you know how good Minkyung's cooking is. Why are you even asking that?”

“She’s gotten a lot better lately. Want to die?”

The three of them burst out laughing inside the elevator.

But a moment later, when the elevator doors opened, their expressions returned to stone-cold professionalism as they headed toward the interrogation room.

“Wait here for a bit. If you need anything, press that button and someone will come.”

I nodded and sat down.

Yoon Jaeha sat beside me and spoke.

“Don't worry too much.”

“About what?”

“Prosecutorial questioning. It's really nothing special.”

He only said that because he had no idea how many times I had walked in and out of interrogation rooms in my previous life.

“What is there to worry about?”

“Well, that's good then. I come here occasionally with chaebol chairmen, you know? Even they get pretty nervous in this place. Funny, isn't it?”

As Yoon Jaeha and I chatted, the door opened and the Chief Prosecutor of Seoul Central District entered.

Yoon Jaeha immediately stood and bowed.

“Attorney Yoon. Long time no see.”

“Yes, Chief Prosecutor. I think it's been several months.”

“That's right. I had dinner with your father back then, didn't I?”

“Yes.”

Kang Hyunjun, Chief Prosecutor of Seoul Central District.

He was an elite prosecutor who had walked the royal road of Seoul High School and Korea National University.

His political inclinations, however, were quite different from President Yoon Changho's.

Kang Hyunjun belonged to the mainstream faction, while Yoon Changho had always been an outsider.

“Mr. Kim Muhyuk?”

“Yes, senior.”

“You don't have to be too nervous. I just came to see your face.”

“Thank you. Please speak comfortably.”

“Can I?”

“Of course.”

Apparently in a good mood, Kang Hyunjun laughed casually.

“It won't take very long. Even the prosecution isn't reckless enough to force an investigation using fabricated evidence. Still, considering public attention, prepare yourself for an overnight interrogation.”

“Yes. I took that into consideration before returning. But I expect this matter to end with this investigation.”

Kang Hyunjun nodded readily.

“Don't worry about that. How about a cup of coffee?”

“Yes.”

About thirty minutes passed while we drank coffee and talked.

Then the door opened, and Oh Hyunwoo stepped inside before stopping abruptly.

“Oh, Prosecutor Oh is here. I should get going now. Good luck with the questioning.”

“Yes, senior. I'll greet you again another time.”

Kang Hyunjun patted my shoulder and left.

“What was that? Why did the Chief Prosecutor come here?”

“Wasn't he let in by you?”

“No. I specifically told them not to let anyone in. Damn it, these bastards!”

I stopped Oh Hyunwoo before he could storm out.

“It's fine. He said he just wanted to see my face. How could ordinary prosecutors stop him anyway?”

“Muhyuk. I don't like that guy. I can never tell what's going on inside his head. Feels like there are dozens of fox snakes wriggling around in his stomach.”

Laughing, I patted his shoulder.

“Well, maybe he has ambitions of his own.”

“Tch. Let's sit.”

Yoon Jaeha, Oh Hyunwoo, and I sat facing each other.

“Shall we begin? Sorry, but from now on, I have to treat you officially, Muhyuk.”

“Got it. This is being recorded, right?”

“Of course. Procedures have to be followed so nobody can dispute anything later.”

“Good. Let's start.”

After taking a deep breath, Oh Hyunwoo instructed them to begin recording.

“We will now begin the questioning of President Kim Muhyuk. First, regarding the allegations raised by Candidate Choi Seohyeon. Have you ever provided illegal political funds to politicians?”

His voice was cold and professional.

It was the first time I had seen this side of Oh Hyunwoo, and the unfamiliar feeling struck me before I answered.

“That is completely false. I have never provided illegal political funds to any politician.”

When I paused briefly, Yoon Jaeha nodded as if telling me to continue.

I opened my mouth again.

“Of course, I have made donations to several lawmakers who are acquainted with Floor Leader Lee Myungsoo. However, all donations were made within legal limits. I have never provided illegal political funds.”

“Then why do you think your name came up in the conversation between Candidate Choi Seohyeon and Representative Choi Taeuk?”

“I wonder about that myself. My guess is that someone is trying to use me to gain political advantage.”

Oh Hyunwoo pulled a stack of documents from a cardboard box.

“President Kim. These documents were submitted by Candidate Choi Seohyeon's side. According to these records, you met with the politicians listed here.”

Yoon Jaeha and I examined the documents carefully.

After a brief discussion with him, I replied.

“All of these dates correspond to periods when I wasn't even in Korea. You can verify that through immigration records.”

Oh Hyunwoo nodded.

“We already checked. That's why we questioned the credibility of these documents. However, they're extremely detailed. They're not the kind of thing that can be fabricated easily.”

Of course they weren't.

I made them myself.

The questioning continued after that.

Oh Hyunwoo meticulously asked about every allegation raised by Choi Seohyeon, and I calmly answered.

Occasionally, Yoon Jaeha would interject with additional explanations.

“President Kim, I think this part needs a more detailed explanation.”

“Understood, Counselor.”

Following Yoon Jaeha's advice, I explained everything as thoroughly as possible.

The investigation continued until dawn.

I answered every allegation directed at me sincerely.

Finally, Hyunwoo asked:

“Is there anything else you'd like to say?”

I thought for a moment before speaking.

“Prosecutor. The essence of this case isn't a simple political funding scandal. It's a carefully orchestrated political operation. That's the point I want to emphasize.”

“What do you mean?”

“I believe there is an unknown force standing behind Candidate Choi Seohyeon. That force is probably still watching this situation from behind the curtain.”

As I spoke seriously, Oh Hyunwoo's voice became equally grave.

“Tell us everything you know.”

“Investigate Candidate Choi Seohyeon's movements. If you do, you'll naturally move closer to the truth.”

“...Understood.”

Oh Hyunwoo raised his hand and stopped the recording.

The camera light went out, and we stretched comfortably.

“Whew. This wasn't exactly easy.”

Yoon Jaeha and Oh Hyunwoo laughed.

“This is nothing. Sometimes they deliberately drag things out. If they summon you for three days of overnight interrogations, even a president—not just a chaebol chairman—would be completely drained.”

“Ugh. I couldn't do that. Not twice.”

As I exaggerated my suffering, Oh Hyunwoo laughed again.

“You worked hard. It's over now. When are you leaving?”

“I'm resting for a day and leaving tomorrow.”

“You really are busy, huh?”

“Wall Street doesn't look stable either. If the United States collapses, Korea won't escape unscathed.”

After chatting for another hour, I left the building.

Questions rained down from reporters.

I gave a short response.

“I have sincerely explained every allegation against me. Everything now depends on the prosecution. Please do not forget the true nature of this case. Only continued public attention can reveal the truth.”

Without another word, I got into the car.

Manager Ma, sitting in the passenger seat, asked:

“Are you alright, Boss? How did it go?”

“Exactly according to plan. The knife handle is in the prosecution's hands now. We'll rest for a day and leave again.”

“Understood, Boss.”

Outside the window, Seoul's night scenery swept by rapidly.

Even amid political turmoil, Seoul's nights remained as dazzling as ever.

* * *

Only a few hours after I left the Prosecutors’ Office, Choi Seohyeon called an emergency press conference.

It looked like his final desperate struggle.

On the television screen, Choi Seohyeon stepped up to the podium.

His face looked exhausted, but his eyes still burned intensely.

— Citizens of this nation, I stand before you today to tell the truth.

Unlike his intense gaze, his voice trembled.

Soon, however, it steadied.

— First, I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone who trusted and supported me. However, I will never give up. Because all of this is part of a massive conspiracy.

Murmurs spread among the reporters.

— The allegation that I received thirty billion won in illegal political funds is completely fabricated. It is a false accusation created by Kim Muhyuk and his forces to destroy me.

I chuckled.

Exactly as expected.

Choi Seohyeon continued.

— Kim Muhyuk has long sought to interfere in Korean politics. His goal is to manipulate politicians for his own benefit.

The reporters whispered among themselves, but Choi Seohyeon pressed on.

— I became entangled in this conspiracy because I tried to stop that plan. I possess records of Kim Muhyuk's secret meetings with various politicians, as well as records of financial transactions. I intend to submit all of these materials to the prosecution.

I looked toward Manager Ma.

He shook his head.

Meaning no such evidence existed.

— Citizens, please look at the true nature of this case. This is not merely a political funding scandal. Our democracy is under threat. Kim Muhyuk and his forces are attempting to control our country.

Choi Seohyeon's voice grew louder and louder.

He sounded like a revolutionary fighter resisting evil itself.

— I will fight to the very end. Until the truth is revealed, and until our democracy is protected, I will never back down.

Questions immediately poured from the reporters.

— Candidate Choi, how did you obtain that evidence?

— What do you think about allegations that you're receiving support from an unknown force?

— What do you think about demands from party leadership that you resign?

Choi Seohyeon answered calmly.

— I cannot reveal the source of the evidence because it could affect the investigation. As for these alleged hidden forces, I have no idea whether such things exist. I have never received support from anyone. My only reliable supporters are the people of this nation. And...

He hesitated briefly, bit his lip, then continued.

— I regret the demands made by the party leadership. However, I will stand by my convictions to the very end.

I turned off the television and smiled.

It was unfortunate watching him struggle to the bitter end, but it was already too late.

“What should we do, Boss?”

“Nothing. He's already digging his own grave. I don't need to do anything. He's destroying himself.”

Choi Seohyeon's press conference would only push him further into a corner.

Claims without evidence.

Statements bordering on conspiracy theories.

Relentless accusations.

All of it would only further erode his credibility.

“Manager Ma. Leave Korea to someone else now. Let's focus on the United States. Make the preparations.”

“Yes, Boss.”

Even if I did nothing from this point onward, Choi Seohyeon would collapse on his own.

At this rate, the Centrist Party's presidential candidate would win the election again, and Myungsoo would become one of the most powerful figures in the ruling party.

Once that happened, there would no longer be anyone in Korea capable of standing in my way.
