Chapter 320: Chapter 320: Bin, Your Kung Fu Is So Good
"Bin, this is no laughing matter." Once he understood what Shen Yibin was suggesting, Director Kong immediately tried to talk him out of it. If a stunt double got injured, he could always find a replacement. But if Shen Yibin ended up in the hospital, who would be there to coach Hah’Er? "Don’t be fooled by how easily they perform those moves. It’s all built on a foundation of real kung fu, and even so, injuries can happen. Didn’t we just have an accident a moment ago? You shouldn’t take this kind of risk."
"But I really think I can pull off those moves," Shen Yibin said earnestly. ’All those thrashings I took from Shi Gaofei weren’t for nothing. My reflexes, stamina, and flexibility all improved dramatically. I’ve kept up with my training since Shi Gaofei left, so these moves are honestly no big deal.’ "Didn’t you already make arrangements with the team in Shanghai? Can we really afford any more delays? Just let me give it a shot."
"Mr. Shen, these moves might look simple, but they’re impossible without real training. They place incredible demands on a person’s core strength and reflexes. You really shouldn’t risk it," the stunt coordinator advised, his tone laced with a hint of displeasure. These skills were their bread and butter. If just any random person could pull them off, they might as well all go starve.
If it weren’t for Director Kong’s immense standing in Xiangjiang and the respect he always showed Shen Yibin, the stunt coordinator probably would have started cursing right then and there. Even so, his tone was still deeply unpleasant.
"Alright, in that case, I’ll just try to copy the moves. If I can do it, we’ll continue filming. If not, we’ll forget it." The coordinator’s tone rubbed Shen Yibin the wrong way, strengthening his resolve to step in. He walked to the side to warm up, then mimicked the injured stunt double’s actions. He took a running start at the rock face, leaped into the air, kicked off the wall twice, and upon reaching about head height, he whipped around in a beautiful roundhouse kick, landing steadily on the ground.
The movements were clean, crisp, and impossibly fluid—an absolute pleasure to watch. The sight made Director Kong’s and the stunt coordinator’s eyes nearly pop out of their sockets. Nearby, the jaws of Fang Yuanshan, Murong Li, and the other crew members collectively hit the floor.
"Amazing! Mr. Shen, your kung fu is incredible!" Murong Li was the first to cheer, her ears flushing red and hot. ’Even if Shen Yibin had zero connection to Director Kong or Hah’Er, I’d be willing to jump into bed with him for that display of kung fu alone. To pull off a roundhouse kick like that, his core strength must be insane, right? He could probably pull off all sorts of difficult positions!’ A wave of heat washed over Murong Li at the thought.
"Amazing kung fu, Mr. Shen!" Fang Yun shouted, not to be outdone. ’This is the perfect chance to get on Shen Yibin’s good side!’ Spurred on by the two women, nearly every crew member broke into applause and cheers.
"Mr. Shen looks so refined and gentle. I never would have thought his kung fu was so incredible. Talk about hidden depths."
"I know, right? His moves were so clean! He has the raw power of Shaolin and the fluid grace of Wing Chun. It’s like he’s mastered the best of both the northern and southern styles. Mr. Shen’s kung fu is simply amazing!"
’Huh. How come I didn’t think anything of it when Murong Li and Fang Yun said my kung fu was good, but it feels so weird hearing it from the guys?’ Shen Yibin scratched his head in confusion and walked over to Director Kong and the stunt coordinator, who were still in a daze. "So, can we get back to filming?"
"Oh, for heaven’s sake, Bin, why didn’t you tell me you had this up your sleeve?" Director Kong clapped his hands together, his voice filled with regret. "If I’d known, I would have cast you as the male lead! No need for a stunt double, and you already have perfect chemistry with Hah’Er. It would have been absolutely perfect!"
"Amazing kung fu, Mr. Shen. I completely misjudged you." The stunt coordinator’s face burned with embarrassment. He hadn’t expected to be humbled by Shen Yibin’s actions so quickly. The few moves he had just performed were absolutely on par with the injured stunt double’s; he was more than capable of taking his place to finish the scene. He gave a dry, sheepish laugh and said, "If you don’t mind my asking, Mr. Shen, which master did you study under?"
"Ah, you’re asking who taught me my kung fu?" An image of a black-and-white figure flashed through Shen Yibin’s mind. He said slowly, "The one who taught me is named Shi Gaofei. I once saw it chase off a lion on the African savanna with my own two eyes."
Hearing this, Director Kong began to snicker off to the side, while the stunt coordinator looked completely stunned. ’He can chase off a lion? This master must be on a whole other level!’ "No wonder, no wonder..." He didn’t dare say another word.
"Someone, get the contract and insurance papers over here! Use the highest pay grade! Bin, we’ll be counting on you for the next few days." Snapping out of his daze, Director Kong was ecstatic. He immediately had someone fetch a contract for Shen Yibin to sign.
After the contract was signed, Director Kong turned to the stunt coordinator. "Get your people to demonstrate the next set of moves. Teach Mr. Shen well. Let’s get this shot and wrap up early!"
"Yes, no problem." This time, the stunt coordinator didn’t dare mutter anything about ’trade secrets not to be taught to outsiders.’ Shen Yibin’s master was a being who could chase off lions; why would such a person care about his crew’s petty little techniques? Besides, he’d heard rumors about Hah’Er’s salary and figured Shen Yibin must now be worth hundreds of millions. A man like that was hardly going to steal his livelihood.
The makeup artists and costumers quickly whisked Shen Yibin off to the dressing room to get him ready. By the time he came out, he already bore a striking resemblance to Fang Yuanshan, at least from behind.
"Hmph!" Just as Shen Yibin was about to start his training, he heard Hah’Er cry out. He turned to see Hah’Er mimicking his earlier stunt, charging at the rock face and leaping to kick off the wall. And then... DUANG! It face-planted onto the grass. Given its speed and weight, there was no way it could replicate Shen Yibin’s feat.
"Nnngh~" Hah’Er scrambled up from the grass, dejectedly brushing the leaves from its head. It stared blankly at Shen Yibin, as if it couldn’t understand why it wasn’t able to do what he had just done.
"AHAHAHAHAHA!" Seeing Hah’Er’s predicament, the entire crew couldn’t help but roar with laughter. The scene was just too funny!
"Hmph!" Hah’Er glared at them indignantly, but unfortunately, its expression wasn’t the least bit intimidating. This only made everyone laugh even harder.
"Did you get that shot?" Once the laughter died down, Director Kong immediately rushed over to the cameraman, asking urgently. This scene wasn’t in the script, but its comedic value was top-notch. If they put it in the final film, it would surely have the whole theater roaring with laughter. It was a moment they absolutely could not miss!
