Chapter 221: Chapter 221: The Reactor Is Broken
Professor Myers’s mouth fell slightly open. Recalling Chloe Sinclair’s words, it all clicked into place.
Having lived two lives, Chloe Sinclair had already experienced some things once before, so she naturally saw them more clearly than the average person.
After signing her leave request form in the office, she hurried over to the lab.
The device was now more than halfway complete, and the nuclear fusion reactor was beginning to take shape. However, the work grew more complex with each step, and Chloe Sinclair didn’t trust anyone else with it, so she had been monitoring it closely.
As soon as she clocked in at the lab, Chloe Sinclair went to an office to change into a protective suit and goggles. Only after completing the decontamination process at the entrance did she step into the main laboratory area.
"Chloe, you’re here?"
Nathan Trenton looked at Chloe Sinclair, a faint smile flickering in his eyes, though it was hard to see clearly through his thick goggles.
"Yeah."
Chloe Sinclair walked over to her workstation and picked up a notebook, ready to start recording data.
Just then, a staff member, also in a white protective suit, jogged over, looking tense.
"Mr. Trenton, the reactor data in Lab One is abnormal. You need to go take a look, quickly."
The color drained from Nathan Trenton’s face. Without another word, he set down the documents in his hands. "Have everyone stop what they’re doing and evacuate the lab immediately."
With that, he rushed toward Lab One without another moment for explanation.
Hearing this, Chloe Sinclair’s expression turned grim.
A problem with the reactor was an extremely serious matter. If things went wrong, the entire lab, and possibly even the surrounding area, would be in danger.
With no time for lengthy explanations, Chloe Sinclair said to the same staff member, "Notify everyone else to evacuate immediately. I’m going to Lab One to check it out."
Before anyone could react, Chloe Sinclair was gone, following after Nathan Trenton.
Inside the lab, red lights flashed relentlessly as a piercing alarm sent the room into a panic.
The sudden crisis threw everyone into a state of alarm.
Chloe Sinclair hurried down the corridor, her expression dead serious, communicating nonstop with Eight in her mind.
’What’s the situation with the reactor? Can you sense it?’
[There’s a risk of a leak. If you go now, Host, you might still be able to salvage the situation.]
Eight’s tone lacked its usual cheekiness. Its slightly mechanical voice was tinged with gravity.
[BEEP BEEP—]
[A random Level 3 mission has been issued: Host, please shut down the reactor valve and prevent the accident. Mission success reward: 8,888 reputation value.]
Chloe Sinclair was inwardly surprised that the reward for a Level 3 mission was so high.
But she didn’t slow down. If anything, she ran even faster.
[Don’t worry, Host. As long as your mission is active and the system hasn’t suffered catastrophic destruction, you will be safe.]
’Yeah. Thanks, Eight.’
There was no time for Chloe Sinclair to overthink it. After thanking Eight, she opened the door and entered Lab One.
By then, everyone had been evacuated from Lab One, leaving only Joel Quincy and Nathan Trenton behind.
When they heard the mechanical door hiss open, they both glanced back.
They frowned upon seeing Chloe Sinclair. Nathan Trenton, in particular, immediately took a few steps toward her, his voice sharp with anger. "I told you to leave! It’s dangerous in here!"
"I know, Nathan."
With that, Chloe Sinclair turned her attention to the reactor before them.
Her senses were far sharper than a normal person’s, allowing her to perceive the subtle changes in the laboratory’s environment.
After a single glance, she stated, "The reactor’s valve is broken."
